The extreme is displayed in the movie "Slumdog Millionaire" - abducting kids, crippling them, then forcing them to work as beggars. This has happened in Thailand too and every time I see a cripple begging, I am thinking the only way I can stop others from the same predicament is to not give.

No one is crippling people to make beggars in Thailand.  Those crippled beggars you see are Cambodian land mine victims.  There is a limitless supply of cripples next door and new ones are being made all the time.  Hundreds of people are killed or crippled by land mines every year in Cambodia.  You are not contributing to making more crippled by giving so don't stop because of that.  There aren't a whole lot of ways for them to make a living except by moving to Thailand to beg.

It is almost a monthly occurence up in Chiang Mai that kids are abducted. It used to be a lot more frequent a few years ago, (In my village many parents wouldn't even let there kids out on the street - They were terrified of those minibuses with the blacked out windows, as there was so much fear of them stealing kids) and it is well known that a lot of these kids end up maimed and put out to beg! (and admittedly - some were even sold by their own parents!)   By the way, I have a ten year old for sale at the moment - he is a PITA, and eats me out of house and home plus the electric bills for his computer and PS3 are busting the bank - going cheap! Any offers?

There are no shortage of these 'blind' beggars in Patong, they usually drive to work, adopt their blind camoflauge and mislead people who are being charitable.  It is not illegal so the police pick them up, drive then 3-5 Km's into the hills and drop them off.  I am sure they have a network where other 'blind' beggars pick them up.

Not to mention the vast numbers of Thais pretending to work for some "Boy Scout" charity.

I was in Pattaya once, on the beach when one of these creatures approached - It assumed I neither spoke nor understood any Thai. The creature spoke to my Thai friend warning her not to say anything and that he was after 500 Baht - After his rehersed spiel and him showing me his "boy scout" charity badge - he was rather taken aback when I answered him in Thai - needless to say, face was lost and he scuttled away like a rat to fleece someone else.

There really are some morally devoid creatures on this earth.

When I was a kid, my parents wouldn't let me out at night because everyone believed men in vans with blacked out windows would drive around stealing kids so that they could sacrifice them in satanic cults.  It happened all the time, why just last month the next town over they'd say, heard about it from friends at work...

Big surprise that those that get a lot of money without working so hard for it blows it on alcohol and gambling.

A good reason to never start extending some government handouts for 'out of work' people here. It isn't going to help anyone but those having alcohol and gambling halls.

Could be a good argument for the gov't to open and run a casino, so they can get the money back that they hand out.

many of the beggars posing as monks in the Sukhumvit tourist areas are actually Mainland Chinese on tourist visas

they also infest the streets of Hong Kong where an ex cop friend tells me they beg all day, go back to their guest house accommodation in the evening, get changed, then head for the nightclubs, the law there says that begging is not employment so they cannot be prosecuted for breaching visa conditions, go figure...???

People should slap them on the back and in doing so, stick a sign on them saying 'I AM A FAKE MONK'

You are correct. I have been to Romania twice, and no where else in the world have I experienced the level of hatred that the Romanians have towards the Roma gypsies. It actually makes sense, as the gypsies are a culture of theft, so the gypsies are robbing the poor Romanians on a regular basis.

As far as the beggars here, my understanding from living in Patong was that ALL the begging kids were owned by the mafia, who controlled them and took all the money they made. So the rule among long term expats was to NEVER EVER give money to them as it simply went to the mafia. If you were kindhearted , you could buy them a meal.

In another... way you could reconsider their actions as their ability to have had the clarity of mind to have found a hole in the bucket of one society. And there are some large buckets around where no one will notice any insignificant leakage forever. They actually profited from something that hurt nobody. The court actually ruled that. In other words it's pretty remarkable and downright impressive they could pull a scam like this, a scam indeed where everybody walked home from with a smiling face, everyone involved felt better. I agree with you, sir Reasonable man, it is anti social behaviour. But please give me you honest opinion. Would somebody who never had money to safe in his life, somebody who is poor but had a good buddhist heart. Would they not be tempted, would they not be inticed by they actual social system they were put in as a baby in the first place?

What is good and what is bad, who sets the rules? It's different in every society as well between the layers in rich and poor in a particular society. I have found in my humble opinion the rich are the biggest criminals and we should leave the poor. Let them be. Maybe better rich society's should help them more.

I've come to find many opinions peculiar because they where inferred or should i say conditioned by the society one grew up in. I think one should look broader.

Thank you again

So you are all for the roma gypsies begging as fake muslims as well and the fake monks begging as well.
I believe they tried that in China via the 'red guard' killing everybody richer than a peasant.
Same thing in Cambodia via the 'khmer rouge'.
The outcome did not accomplish much. I am sure if that was done on a global scale, there would never have been an internet let alone a computer. Just a bunch of farmers and hunter gatherers and roaming gangs of thugs to steal it from them.
History has shown time and time again, where communism goes, famine soon follows.

Bad people steal children, handicap them, and force them into beggers.
It does happen in real life.

Very Interesting topic, I'm sure we have all been duped by some beggars, some of them are for real. There is a guy with one leg on these terrible wooden crutches around where i used to live, Thai people used to buy him food and things, he was homeless. I used to give him all my old clothes regularly and  sometimes I would sit with him and chat over a can of leo, sometimes all these people want is some company, it must be very lonely being homeless. this particular beggar used to wave to me when i passed in the street on my bike, made me feel good to just give a little time for someone less fortunate.

They should give them a new job...Acting on TV at least .They obviously had talent at fooling people at something they are not. Unlike the 99% of the so called actors we see every day on TV in Thailand.Posted Image
