Hi!

We're planning a ride to Malaysia and will enter via Sadao and are thinking about returning to Thailand via Betong and on to Yala.

Does anyone know the condition of Route 4106 from Betong to Yala in Southern Thailand?

We'll be on road bikes so a bit rough is not a problem, but we'd like to avoid dirt! Also, what's the risk of getting blown up by insurgents?

Finally, who would I need to contact to learn the hours of operation for the Thai-Malay Border Crossing at Betong?

Going by the sat pics avbl on http://wikimapia.org...69&z=16&l=0&m=p
It appears to be a good quality bitumen road with centre line markings all the way from the border to yala.
You can also view udom09's photos taken along the road in 2011, he calls it the 410 but its the 4106.
Just follow the road along on the map and click on the little pics for a bigger view.  Udom09 has a pic every 4 or 5 km's.

Shy is not the reason-see also the other response: just to inform you this is prime insurgent country-to the extent that even the few buses running have ceased to. NO-farang are indeed not prime targets, but you have a real chance to be the wrong time and wrong place next casualty. ALL countries warn most strongly against travelling on your own there. So commoin knwoledge that most likely people think youre a little daft. The lack of response is due to that: its not shyness, but simply a fact that about noone goes there. Your travel-insurance may also turn out to be void if something happens.

Good lord, a bit paranoid aren't you? We're riding motorcycles, which are dangerous enough to begin with.

No one goes there? Really? Betong remains a popular tourist destination. Have spoken to a lot of Malay bikers on other forums who advise that the main road is perfectly safe.

We're not going to skip it because of the very slim chance we might get shot or blown up.

Thanks for nothing. It's going to be a great trip and I'll share our trip report once we get back.

Must confess I've never used Wikimapia before- wow, it seems to have a lot more features and detail than Google Maps which I usually use.

Trip planning is coming along and it sounds like the road from Yala to Betong is a good one!
