I am planning a holiday at the end of this month.  Which area would forum member vote as best area to stay in Kata Beach or Karon Beach?

Agree with the  other poster. Let us know what you want from your holiday, the type of accommodation you are looking for as well, and I am sure the forum members will give an impartial view.

The beach itself, Kata

Irish pub, Karon

a circle/roundabout, only in Karon

Subway, well its pretty much inbetween

Katamama Thai restaurant on the beach, not close to the beach, Kata Beach

My reply indicates you need to be more specific at what you are looking for

We are 60+ looking for nice hotel to relax. 3-4 star. close to restaurants bar etc. Not too noisy. Not too much of a climb up to hotel.
I do not mind an apartment .

Kata or Karon; Karon is totally flat but more spread out and Kata is a little hilly but with some better restaurants.

Both have a good selection of hotels and restaurants and some proper bars, although neither's relatively small 'bar districts' could be described as quiet.

For reference most of the North end of Kata Beach only has Club Med with everything else set back > 0.5km+, only the south end has hotels close to the beach.

Karon has a number of 4 Star Hotels on the beach road, but it can be quite some walk to the central area and only a few good restaurants..

There is no night time public transport in either area, plus very little during the day time.

As you were already advised in another thread, use Trip Advisor/Agoda and find a hotel you like, as that seems to be your most important criteria.

Be careful with the location. A number of Kata/Karon hotels are a long way from the beach and bar/restaurant areas.

Perhaps the southern end of Karon may suit you; it's a bit quieter that the Karon Circle end and it's pretty close to Kata as well. There are a number of 3 star hotels close to the beach there. Look at the hotel map on Agoda. You may not want a place that is overrun by Russians so read the reviews.

However there are a lot more restaurants and bars in Kata or near Karon Circle so it depends upon your priorities..

Check Kata Beach Resort or Karon Beach Resort, both should suit your needs. Karon Beach resort is at the southern part of Karon, attached to the Northern end of Kata, so all restaurants etc. in Kata Center are within walking distance.
