Every time i visit Bangkok, I see vast amounts of import cars (not all new) on red plates.

Now I did not arrive into Thailand on the last Banana boat, so i'm guessing theres a loop hole that allows you to take an import in on a red plate?

I'd really appreciate if someone could put me in the loop.

Red plates are dealer plates, and you have them on while waiting for your whites.

If you're seeing imports on reds, that tells you straight away they're not temporary imports, so import duties have been paid - excise and VAT has to be paid before they can get their white plates though.

Reds can only be used for a max, of 30 days - after that it's a 10,000 Baht fine.

and any vehicle without paid duties, excicetax and interior tax and vat, will be impounded at next check point

some of them delay white plate reg illegally for a while, among other things to make them next model year, anyone falling for it

I think there must be some loophole that allows people to run the exotic cars around on red plates. You see so many high end cars on them i refuse to believe they have all just been purchased.

My friend told me you can take a car in under your passport as a temporary import, but you need to visa run the car every once in a while??

I have owned car import/export/dealers, and basicly know every loophole in the contries I have looked into it. I have lived here full time for 9 years, and if I had found one worth the hassle, I would have used it. Bikes, cars, pickups, limos.

There are in TH loopholes to lower taxes, some of them legal, but redplate or not is not the issue. Any vehicle on public road must be taxed if checked, no matter what plate, if not its bye bye and sold at auction

You can if you have a Non Imm Visa bring in a temp import, if you provide a cash deposit or bank guarantee for possible taxes, and you can be granted for up to 180 days. Basicly its simpler to pay the taxes if you want to keep it longer, as on next boarder approach you can be denied to bring the car in

I didnt touch the red plate issue

To get legal red plates from DLT, you need to be a licenced car dealer. To import you need an import licence

and illegal redplates are up to 5 years in jail

You are not being flamed.

You asked the question and it was answered by several people but you didn't appear to believe them but do appear to believe your friend.

What I politely suggest that you do is to search the forum for the information that you are looking for and read up on them. The threads go back years and many people has posted on the subject and the result is that your friend is incorrect.

There are lots of older cars both high end and low end on Red plates.... If would appear that car coming in are sold as 2011 or 2012...

Someone in the Village last year bought one he had Red plates for 5 or 6 weeks before the white plates arrived, New in Thailand, but manufactured in Japan in 2003, cost 430k where he bought they have lots of car and vans range from 220k up all will have red plate when you buy........... Over a year ago now someone in the next Village bought a Benz W124, Red plates for some weeks before white plates arrived, now that model is 20 years old.

Look on one2car if you know the dates of model changes, you will see straight away that the 2011 model for sale cheap, is an old model so must be an imported.one..

Odd ? have seen same model/year cars For Sale,, Thai built same price as import, but import has ABS, Airbags, leather, CD/MP3, often climate control etc, yet the Thai build has non of these.

But the dealers take between 2 and 4 months to obtain the white plates

Bit off red plates, but noticed a few weeks ago

'Toyota Sure'  now beyond me but they had a 2010 Toyota bB for sale, I know that there was a new/face-lift model, or a different front way back in 2005

But the dealers take between 2 and 4 months to obtain the white plates

it takes a few hours, but if their slow it takes 2-4 weeks

my december mazda2 took exactly 30 days, december 17 to january 17, just in time to comply with the law

In addition to the ordinary stuff I required 2 things

1st class in writing before leaving showroom, acrually before making downpayment. No problem a tanacgart Insurance form filled out with pen
2.000 baht a day refund a day starting 31st day after delivery if book and plate not issued

No hassle

2 months for my car bought from the Toyota Pattaya dealer, 4 months for the wife's bought from the Toyota Rayong dealer.

It's not the transport office that takes the time, it's the dealer getting the paperwork, it seems they can build a car quicker than producing the book for it.

I'm waiting 5 months now for the white/green plates, should come this week I was promised.
