Govt to launch thank you party for international community for flood help

BANGKOK, 7 February 2012 (NNT) - The government has prepared to launch the Love Thailand party to thank the international community and organizations for their contribution to efforts to deal with the crisis during the massive flooding in Thailand.

Prime Minister's Office permanent secretary Thongthong Chandrangsu has announced that the party will be held at the Government House this Friday from 5 -8 p.m. According to Thongthong, Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda, other privy councilors, cabinet members, and foreign ambassadors have accepted the invitation.

The event will be broadcast live on NBT as well as MCOT.

Meanwhile, Democrat Spokesperson criticized the government's thank-you party, saying over 500,000 households still have not received any flood assistance. He also demanded that the government disclose how much it plans to spend on the party.

This would be a perfect opportunity for the 500,000 people to hold a demonstration in front of the government house.

I can only assume that this event has bee planned well in advance to allow the invitees to mark their calendars. Wuoldn't do for PM Yingluck to have to party alone again, now would it?

Let's hope they've included the US Navy contingent in the guest list this time.

WASHINGTON: The US Navy has withdrawn several ships sent to help with relief efforts in flood-hit Thailand after receiving "mixed" messages from the Bangkok government, a defence official said on Monday. The USS George Washington aircraft carrier and other ships were deployed to the area on October 16 for potential disaster relief work as Thailand faced massive flooding from monsoon rains, said Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander John Perkins. But the US military never received a formal request from the Thai government and the three-ship aircraft carrier group along with a fourth ship, the USS Kidd, were released and left the area on Friday, said Perkins, spokesman for the US Pacific Fleet based in Hawaii. "We are ready to help but we haven't got a request," said a US defence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "There were two channels (in the Thai government)," the defence official told AFP. "One was saying 'Yes' and one was saying 'no.'"

It is normal that an event be held to acknowledge and thank the volunteers and the workers. It is the right thing to do and is a necessary function in Thailand where it is essential to give public accolades.

The event announced seems ONLY for foreign dignetaries, those may need just to be 'massaged' to rebuild their confidence in Thailand as business partner. The event for Thai organizations and volunteers who within the Thai system may need public accolades, that event still needs to be planned. Maybe for that the government is still busy ordering nice decorations, with "thank you k. Thaksin" and pictures of waterpumps from SouthKorea. May I suggest to add the odd 'cool' sticker with "red-shirts only" ?

Generally speaking it is after the job is done.
I wonder if they are including the Dutch volunteers who they turned down?

Yeah no kidding I did not see any of those big wigs at places I was helping out at. The rich people who showed up unload the car take a picture like they have been helping for hours then take off 5 minutes later. The people who deserve a ton of credit is the Thai Army. I met so many soldiers helping in so many areas they were always in good spirits and helpful. It was a strange thing since I live near the base off Victory monument this old soldier saluted me and said hello. I could not figure out why until I remember he was working on the same truck I was on. They all got a big chuckle watching a giant farang pick little old ladies off of embankments and carrying them to the truck. Good times really made me love that Thai spirit.

At first glance I considered this a gross misappropriation of funds. Then I saw this for what it obviously is - a necessary attempt at damage limitation. Loss of overseas investor confidence is surely the biggest threat to the people of thailand right now.
As much as I feel for the people who will likely never receive compensation for losing everything they own - the somewhat unpalatable reality is that cash is king - without the toyotas et al, many families here would starve (whilst a fortunate few  continued to get mad rich, regardless).
