And the same is true of agnostic which is also misused - it doesn't simply mean "I don't know if god exists" . If I recall my studies correctly,it means someone who holds to the belief that nothing can be known about the nature of god, if he exists.

Theology is meaningless shit, isn't it? How many angels.................?

It means both.
If you are speaking of agnosticism,  yes it does mean both now but in the early days of Christianity, the meaning was more precise. Go back and look at the stuff written by the "Fathers of the Church"

The word predates Christianty and means both unknown and unknowable. I do agree that in the early days of the Church the meaning was more 'precise' ... More precise in that only one of the definitions was used, I think we both know why that was the case.

I think Thai people are used to identifying people with their religion. Five to seven years ago, in the old version of Thai ID card, you would have to specify what religion you were. And it's printed in your ID card (although everything is in Thai). My English friend was shocked to learn about that - "what if you don't have one!", "Why would you have to declare your personal belief????". I think that stems from the fact that Thai people love putting people in the box, you have to fit in their "profile". And they're kind of lost if they can't do that. You can either be A or B or C or D. Otherwise, they don't really know what to say to you. It's very frustrating at times.

About your debate point, I think it really depends on the topic. There is some topic that people like to debate if it's light-hearted and not too personal or dear to their hearts. Otherwise, you might run a risk! That's why some pro-Reds and con-Reds (I avoid labelling con-Reds because there are two many factions and pro-Yellow is just one of them) who were families/relatives/friends just severed their relationship. Or some still continues the relation but vows not to talk about politics with one another. Hence, Thailand is still a deeply divided country. They can't do debating without being personal. I find that they either can't tell the difference in "fighting/arguing" and "debating" or there's a very thin line between the two - to thin to be beneficial. They take offence very easily.

And one thing that I also find is that they are not interested in debate for the sake of good debate. Debating philosophical questions that have no practical value disinterest them or even bore them. And then you're deemed "too serious", or you "think too much"!

Quality point I must say. Not religion as such but a pigeon hole

I certainly avoid talking politics though if I am with a couple of my very close Thai friends then I will say my piece up to a point. For the most part, the wonderful people of Thailand understand that all the politicians are corrupt and vote for the ones which help the Thai people the most. When westerners say Thai people are stupid they should look in their own back yard.

I must admit that I have not found this to be the case (perhaps I should get out more). Perhaps it is because I show a genuine interest in what they say. I don't see it as a win or lose but an exchange of ideas and viewpoints.

non-conformist is a better desciption than atheist because atheism is an organised movement that is negative towards the existence of God and challenges the practicality of world religions.......
No, it isn't. That sounds like the absurd argument that atheism is yet another religion because its a belief system to eschew belief. Totally wrong and part of a propaganda campaign of religious people who believe in fairy tales.
Non-conformist already has a meaning in Christian religions - it was used as a term for those such as Wesleyans who were not members of the Church of England. Hardly applicable to atheists

being apathetic i just dont conform, meaning  i dont give a hoot about the english church description or any other regional religious "authority" ????, 555 ......Thai non-religion conforming individuals do not live in the cupboard

I honestly don't think that I know any Thais who have NO spiritual belief. Do you?
No, I don't! Which is why I'm curious how a Thai who openly voiced no such beliefs would be accepted in Thai society. Quite frankly, it seems to me that any Thais that are openly atheist would more likely be educated in the west, thus making them weirdos by definition, yes?

My take on this Ulysses G is, if you don't leave some kind of mark what the hell are we doing down here anyway.

I'm Buddhist JT so I've got my own spin on this one.

If you can't save the species or the planet maybe you just do a little bit for the things and people who are close to you.

Charity starts at home. I don't know.
