Are the first Apple TV prototype sets already in production?

Persistent rumours of a connected Apple TV to launch in 2012 continue to fly despite a distinct lack of concrete evidence. Nevertheless, recent murmurings from Asian TV manufacturers such as Sharp have alleged that Apple is continuing to shop around for parts; but shopping around doesn’t necessarily mean that Apple really will release a super-slim TV set anytime soon - almost certainly they are investigating the concept and may even have built prototypes, but that’s a very different scenario from an imminent launch of a major new product...

I guess they'll build one... going to have Apple TV build in (that's currently just the little set top box)... going to be pretty... going to not suck.... and something "special"

My guess is that the special feature is something that will accelerate the inevitable move away from Cable TV. Netflix, Hulu are already working on that.. I guess it will be TV on demand where you subscribe to shows you like, and don't pay for all that garbage you never watch. A friend of mine just dumped her cable for Hulu.

Cable TV is the obvious target because everyone hates it - you pay for a package that includes hundreds of channels you don't like, it's very expensive thanks to no competition, and doesn't have on-demand watching either. Looking at the TV market the sets are great in terms of image quality and whatnot - the area that really sucks is how to get content you want to see.

Those of us with True UBC experience this first hand every day. It's no different in the USA though. I think said friend paid over $60 / month for cable before in San Francisco. That's a lot for watching True Blood ...
I am sure it will be USA-only initially gonna be a while before they rescue us from UBC [and thank God for pirate bay...]

Hopefully with the issue of additional TV licenses letter this year will improve the service and drive the costs down - I hope!!
