i was punched several times in the face by a drunken foreigner
outside the kiss restaurant because i looked at him and asked him what he was looking at. many passing tourists stopped to enjoy the fun but nobody offered to help me. one year later i still have dental problems. the police were not involved and being a foreigner to foreigner incident probably would not have helped. you can get away with anything in pattaya. yes it is a very dangerous place. if you have not had an incident you are very lucky. it is only a matter of time. #52Posted Today, 12:13
I feel sorry for this guy and I hope he makes a full recovery.
Some posters here need a reality check thou. Pattaya safe you are really having a laff. I have spent a lot of time in Pattaya over the last 10 years and have wandered around at all times of day and night and nothing has ever happened to me but it would be silly to say that makes Pattaya safe. There is all sorts of stuff going on in Pattaya and the potential for trouble and violence is never far away. Go and start talking to a few Thais about whether they think Pattaya is safe and most will say definitely not. #53Posted Today, 12:32
The topic has shifted a bit but while that is still going on I would add that the dark side has its trouble makers and would-be hard guys fueled by drink. I have had a few verbal confrontations and one physical one so I know it happens. It is wrong to think that police will not deal with a farang vs, farang incident and can and do follow Thai laws and penalties on public disorder.

We hope for a full recovery, strenght to the family.
Pattaya is not what is was 20 years ago, every expat knows this. Drugs changed a lot in this place but also in the rest of the world. Worse than other citys? I also have bin around in the world and believe me there are 100% more dangerous places out there. I agree that it is not save to walk around at night with 2-3-4- or 5 bath of gold around your neck. try to do this in Brazil and you go home in a bag, garanty. I am living in Ubon Ratchathani where it is reasunably calm and save. very nice place ( like a lot in beautiful Thailand ) My wife and I also go somethimes to Pattaya for some holiday but the bars in the night - for me this is past. I think it is time to look for an other holiday place in the coming future. Any suggestions? #56Posted Today, 12:47

It really doesn't make a difference where this attack happened, I don't really understand what that has to do with getting a decent health insurance policy.
Even if the school concerned provided a policy of sorts, it's still up to the individual to make sure that adequate cover is in place. Regardless of where you happen to be in the World. Thailand is not the nanny state that UK has become. #58Posted Today, 13:13
This town has got to have the worst Thai and Farang people of anywhere in Thailand.
Yes I did live there. Yes I was assaulted there. It is an absolute cesspool of humanity. Just look around. Doc #59Posted Today, 13:19

Doc Typical hysterical over-reaction and condemnation of the town that crops up in these threads on an all too frequent basis. #61#62Posted Today, 14:58

Very best wishes to this unlucky guy. He got out from the car on the way home - attacked by a stranger - just a thought : road rage ?

I'm sure there's much more to the story...maybe we'll get it...maybe not. Nobody "deserves" to be beaten into a coma by a metal rod but I'm sure it was not a random act either (as portrayed in this media account) and I feel much safer anywhere in Thailand than in most places in the good ole' US of A! Yeah, there is always more to the story than they're reporting. I've lived here for years and nobody has touched me. Must have gotten into a dispute at the bar. Jaundiced opinion or fact? #66Posted Today, 16:01
i had 8 years in koh Samui and feel safer here. I am outside Pattaya but go in regular and rarlly see trouble, and never had any. In Samui i had 2 friends murdered and saw a Thai shot in the head standing next to me in a night club. I feel safer here.

Wish him to recover, especially if he hasn't been agressive with anyone and not looking for troubles at the bar...

Very sad for this man. Let's hope he recovers soon and the culprits are caught. As for Pattaya, I'd walk around Beach Road at night any time when compared to parts of Rome, Los Angeles, London, Buenos Aires, Paris or any other major city in the world. It ain't the best, but it's FAR from the worst. Wow, thanks for letting us know where you've been or is it part of the "I'd" wishful thinking? "I would" ain't squat; means nothing except for the little guy trying to sound big. Parts ain't parts, so you have to be more specific. Anybody can find "parts" of a city where they might walk at night. Notice you didn't put Joburg on your list. #70Posted Today, 17:15
Of course it all depends on what you do in Pattaya .
Do you go outside in the middle of the night, are you drunk, do you take prostitutes with you home, do you drive an expensive car/bike , do you wear gold chains, do you carry a lot of cash with you, all these factors decides if you are safe or not. If I lived in Pattaya I would try to avoid any confrontations. And never get too drunk. Edited by balo, Today, 17:17 . #71#72Posted Today, 17:35
All posting blokes and jamokes need to define the parameters that qualify Pattaya, or any other city, safe or unsafe before there's any hope for a conclusion.

Yes well Marstons, you don't want to be too smug about your location as it can happen anywhere. You just have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I live on Samui and feel perfectly safe here although i did recently have a bad experience. Turning into a soi on my Honda Click one evening, i was confronted by a black 4x4 with tinted windows, driving towards me on my side of the road (as they tend to do) feeling a bit pissed off as i had no more room to pass, i just stopped and let him continue sounding his horn, indicating that there was heaps of room on his side and that he should back back and move over ! Suddenly the window went down and a body appeared with a pistol pointing at me. I immediately screwed it on and shot across to his side of the road passed him and was away. I heard at least 2 shots fired. After calming down, i decided to go to the nearest police station to report it. When i got there "low and behold" there was the black 4x4 and the guy was inside chatting with his mates, he did not appear to recognise me, so i gave it a miss.
