Fatal shooting prompts searches
The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK:-- Following Friday's student brawl on a No 131 Bangkok bus (Min Buri-Nong Chok) in which a bus driver was killed by a 'stray' bullet, Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Winai Thongsong yesterday said police would conduct locker searches to prevent such fights.

Some 20 Kanchanapisek Technical College students onboard the bus got into an argument with a group from Kanchanapisek Vocation Training College Nong Chok. One of the latter group shot at the bus, but the bullet fatally struck driver Chakkapan Khotjan, 51.

Winai said police were checking security camera footage to identify the shooter. And they would join college teachers to search students' lockers and search students before leaving colleges to prevent brawls. He said the measure had proven effective at Pathumwan Institute of Technology and Rajamangala University of Technology's Uthen Thawai campus.

DDPM steps up measures to prevent heavy rain-induced disaster

BANGKOK, 27 May 2012 (NNT) – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is stepping up its games to prevent possible disasters, induced by heavy rain forecast for the week ahead.

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued its latest warning on Saturday, stating that a monsoon trough over Thailand’s North and upper Northeast is facing strong Southwest monsoon present over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

As a result, all over the country will likely experience heavy rain until Monday.

The Meteorological Department has warned residents of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Nan, Lamphun, Lampang, Prae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, Phang Nga and Satun to beware of flash flood during this period.

Moreover, it has asked fishing boats on both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to be extra-careful due to the possibilities of moderate waves of 2-3 meters. Small boats are also asked to stay ashore during May 26th-29th.

With the warnings out there, the DDPM has collaborated with all its branch offices in related areas to prepare measures to prevent and solve any problems that may be caused by flood and storm, such as landslides.

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry’s Department of Mineral Resources has also notified all surveillance volunteers to watch out for the reports of landslide and promptly inform affected residents.

Government approves special budget to help pineapple farmers

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, 27 May 2012 (NNT) – The government has approved a special budget to help pineapple farmers, who have been suffering the problem of falling prices.

Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Weera Sriwathanatrakoon said on Saturday that Prachuap Khiri Khan’s pineapple, which is its major crop, has been battling the problem of plunging prices for some time.

As the problem has not shown any sign of easing, the government has approved a special budget to buy up more than 60,000 tons of pineapples at the price of 4 baht a kilo.

Mr. Weera is confident that the government’s assistance will effectively solve farmers’ plight.

According to the Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor, related state agencies are speedily working on the budget allocation while the supply purchase will likely start next week.

He added that all pineapples that the government has bought up will be sent to the processing plants, which will transform the supply into canned pineapple for sales whenever prices go up again.

Mr. Weera has stressed that crop supplies eligible for the state incentives are to be of the same quality farmers have sold to factories as young pineapples will not be of any use.
