Electricity is down once again here at Ao Por. This time my internet connection dropped down few seconds before electricity was down at my home (Home have ups, which provide power for the internet connection for few hours). Local CDMA basestation can cope with 10-20 minutes breaks. Maybe some other places on the route do not have backup power installed.
When the CAT internet connection was cut just before, it could indicate that the total outage could be larger.
DTAC is still doing well.
How wide is this power cut on the island? Do you have electricity or not and where?

Electricity is back again. Would be nice to know how wide this outage was.
Also how much outages are you experiencing in other parts of the island and how do you prepare for these electricity cuts? #3Posted Today, 01:31
went out 5mins in phuket town
How do you keep a ups working? My second one stopped working after a few days, now im done buying them at 2.5k baht a pop. The machine works but it never uses the battery when the power goes out. #4Posted Today, 02:03
That 5 minute outage in town probably explains why my connection dropped.
I'm using APC UPS which I understood are the best ones. I don't want to pay for the brand but for the quality. APC is pretty much nerd proof quality. Quite like iPdoructs. Well, with even better educated end/linux users. Batteries in this heat last for about 2 years and need to be replaced after that. I currently have my CAT EVDO connection plugged in to an router which have battery for some hours itself. Laptop have battery and both of these are backed up with an UPS. If there is an longer power cut I lower the home energy usage by shutting down the NAS and Wifi network. This way I can use the internet for few hours longer. I'm still thinking of making home wide UPS which could take care of all power cuts and low/high voltage issues we have here. The battery back could be topped up with solar power when it's available. #5Posted Today, 03:36
How much and where for that brand?
Even my laptop's battery is dead, so powercuts = dekstop and laptop going off. My UPS battery lasted about a week #6Posted Today, 03:47
APC is the brand I would recommend. They have huge variety of products. Take your pick by how much backup power do you need.
If your laptop battery is dead I strongly recommend to buy an replacement for it. It make an really big difference for usage. I tried to hold on with an old battery, but when I finally got a new one.. it was like colors came back to the screen again. #7Posted Today, 06:30
We lost electric here in Kata for about 3 hours. Back on at 19.00. Guests in Patong reported no Electric for a few hours.

I'm quite impressed that in Rawai we haven't lost power once with these unbelievable winds.
