I've had a quick scout for you... http://www.freighter...u/cargo-cruises They seem to require around about $100-$150 per day.
http://matadornetwor...-by-cargo-ship/.. these cost more than a flight in most cases, but a great way to travel. Shame you cant work your passage eh!

Crew work might be more up your street.. ...https://www.crewseek...&feq=-1&sloc=-1
Or knocking on boat doors down by the harbours.. placing an ad even http://www.floatplan.com/crew.htm

Hopefully you will find something. Good luck

Singapore would probably have more ships going in that direction.

to-legally-work on ships you need a seamans ''passport/booklet''. OZzieland sticks to rules-and you likely know about its struggle with many intended asylum-seekers, so this will be enforced.
A-but unlikely- possibility might be a hand on sailing yaughts-for which Sin is not a good choice, but rather Phuket-again you wil need enough experience to be not much of a burden.

I sometimes have more free time than I expected between contracts. So I got to Thailand. Not being in a particular hurry, I tried to find a way to get on a ship from the US to Asia or Thailand directly if possible. I wanted cheap. I wasn't looking for anything fancy. Just the experience and a week or two dieseling across the Pacific. I figured I can help cook (really did use to own a restaurant or two), do dishes, whatever. I am an engineer, and thought maybe even help with some general "Go fer ing" tasks while on the trip.

The old "Tramp Steamer" that you hear about from old novels. I couldn't find anything. Many Large vessels remodeled cabins and now run them as a kind of luxury class tour, and charged several thousand dollars. That was exactly what I did NOT want.
