Thai chili contest sends one to hospital
BANGKOK -- A fresh chili eating contest in northeast Thailand was such a fiery affair, one woman fainted and another contestant threw up, the Bangkok Post said Monday.
The annual weekend contest required contestants to eat 12 ounces of fresh chilies within 12 minutes for the grand prize of $250.
While onlookers cheered and whistled, most contestants didn't appear to be enjoying themselves, the newspaper said. Many quit half-way, one threw up and others simply fled to guzzle water for their burned mouths and throats.
One woman who fainted during the contest was taken to hospital, but was discharged after treatment.
The winner was 42-year-old chili grower, Prachuap Mungkratungklang.
While he didn't make the 12-ounce total, he got through eight ounces of fresh chilies within the allotted time.
This was the 12th time he had won such a contest.
"I really love chilies and will attend every contest. No one can beat me," Prachuap said.
