Best fold up map I've seen so far is the one from Thinknet
MapMagic CD + Large Paper Map
[Bilingual Version]
Road Map of Thailand 2005-2006
299 Baht

*

2nd best would be Michelin map # 965
New number is # 751

The road atlas is # 165 with a slightly better scale.

Surin to Khorat: Not long :o

It is one of the best Thai road maps I have seen. Even has my little village identified. For detailed city maps try the www.udonmap.com web site.

It took me years to find decent maps of Thailand and then by luck while in Roi Et I chanced upon an A4 book: Thailand Road Atlas Volume 4. It covers all the country and has 76 city street maps plus a distance chart, inter city routes, a comprehensive list of cities and villages. The scales are 1:1,000,000 for the area maps and 1:15,000 for the street maps. The country is broken up into 4 distinct areas making it easy to use too. It is in English, and very well made. The ISBN number is 974-921-1-8 and is published by Lotus Image Advertising www.lotusimage.com. The cost is astronomical, just 350 baht! In England I guess it would be nearer £35.

Thanks for that link.  :o
Unfortunately their map page doesn't work but the atlas one does.

The scales under a million are worth checking out.

Re post #12:

Yes, that Atlas is the best buy that I have found in several years of looking for decent maps here.

The full ISBN is 974-92158-1-8

Does anyone know if it is possible to get big scale maps of local areas here?

Presumably the highways departments and the 'amphoe' officers must have them, but will they sell copies and who does one ask?

I hope they redo Isaan sometime on the top Google Earth resolution, but am not holding my breath!

A couple of years ago, I came across a reference by some Flight Simulation buff to actual terrain (rather than the computer generated stuff)  for the Udon Thani and Khon Kaen airport areas. That might be worth following up, for two little bits.

Down at Khon Kaen University, I have seen a really high resolution overhead of that huge campus. Each building and every road on the campus is clearly identifiable. I will ask around, because it shows the stuff exists somewhere.

I would like to know if you have had any success in getting these maps. I am also after large scale maps of the area between Mukdahan and Ubon along Route 212. I am particularly interested in the area around Loeng Nok Tha, about half way between Amnat Charoen and Mukdahan. I worked there in 1967-68 on the construction of the airfield and a rural development road. I would also be interested in making email contact with people who are currently living in the area or are familiar with it. This includes any Brit or Australian Sappers or others who worked on the airfield/road.

With luck, I may get to find the information about locally-produced large-scale maps, as I am starting some research at Khon Kaen University that will bring me and some of the thai-speaking research students into contact with 'amphoe' officials.

I will certainly post on here anything that I find out from them, or from the Geography lecturers.
