I must say I was completely baffled by the OP...... buying crisps, bussing tables? I had hoped that he would repost in hopes of getting some insight into his odd behavior. Thanks to theblether for summing up the job responsabilities and etiquette of the promo girls, I hope the OP took note.

I know two people who run promotion teams for drinks brands. It will be no surprise to learn that the Chang girls and all others have to meet a sales target.

The nightly wage in Chiang Mai is 350-400 baht depending on the company you work for, and a sales bonus is also paid, typically 30 baht if you buy a bottle of whisky for example. A further bonus is paid if you hit your monthly sales target.

As a rule of thumb the target is two bottles per night ( in regards to whisky ), I have no idea what volume of Chang is targeted. The best promotion girls in the best restaurants in CM sell 150 bottles of whisky per month. I don't know how much the monthly bonus is but you can see the financial attraction to this job.

The girls are rotated for various reasons of over familiarity, the example in the OP is a prime example. The promotion managers would go ballistic if they found the girls clearing tables and doing general waiting jobs. That's absolutely not their job and they would risk severe reprimand or possible dismissal if the promotion manager walked in and found them doing that, take note OP. There's a constant friction between the restaurant owners and the promotion managers as many restaurant owners do try to place all their ills at the hands of the girls. Phone calls go flying back and forward every day between owners and the promotion managers as to the suitability and ability of the girls.

The bane of the promotion managers lives is tardy timekeeping by the girls, you can guarantee that just about every day there's an owner on the phone going mad that a girl is late or hasn't turned up at all.

Going back to over familiarity, many girls are targeted by guys and constantly pressured and propositioned. It's a sacking offence for a girl to go with a customer. That's not to say it doesn't happen, but it has to be beyond discrete. If the promotion manager finds out then she's gone, in most cases if the restaurant owner finds out then she's gone too. It's patently obvious that it's not in the best interests of Chang to have people thinking that every one of their girls is a xxxxx for hire. That goes for the restaurants too. One of the reasons why the girls are rotated is to get them away from guys that effectively stalk them.

Peer pressure is another controlling issue, the girls know that if they get grassed in for whoring themselves then they are sacked. The other promotion girls wouldn't hesitate to do in a rival in this way. The more ambitious among them have the phone numbers of the competitor brands managers, usually as a back up in case they get fed up with their own jobs, but the numbers also come in handy for a bit of gossip.

Rather than buying them crisps ( seriously op? blink.png ) most people would invite the girls to drink " with " them. They'll drink from your bottle or tower, whatever. Most restaurants don't allow them to drink before a certain time. It's not the first time that one of these girls has keeled over drunk. I saw one young lady going that direction in May, it goes down like a ton of bricks with all tiers of management. Obviously they would be delighted to eat with you, but again it's not good form to sit down and make yourself at home when the restaurant is busy. I know of two girls that got sacked for that.

There is a high churn in this job, and the age limit is around 24, after that you are effectively shelved. It can be a bit of a blow to go from earning 15-20000 baht a month for evening work then back into the regular economy.

Well explained, Mr. Blether. Perhaps the OP will change his tune? Not holding my breath.

Why on earth would you buy them crisps?!

<snip>

Again, can we hang the OP at dawn tomorrow? Surely he deserves it..

Sarcasm noted, but not needed.

The OP came to the Forum asking a question or attitude that confused him.

As members of the Forum, based on our relative experiences in Thailand, we have endeavoured to answer his enquiry ... for better or for worse.

I'll let you make the judgement which were/are the prime replies.

Why on earth would you buy them crisps?!

???? Because he is not a cheap cuss and maybe he's even a tiny bit generous ?????
-

But the whole point is that isn't generous, it's such a petty and cheap "gift" to girls that are relatively high-status - or at least see themselves that way - so it becomes an insult, like the hotel manager that talks about customers that tip the bag-carriers with a 5 baht coin, much better to tip nothing at all than insult people that way.

And it's not just the amount but the way that it's done, lots of posts above explain the accepted and normal way to interact with these girls if you want to be perceived a big shot or try for a discreet outside experience (good luck).

In Thailand you have to go along with the tried and true ways things are done or you're just seen as bizarre and possibly dangerous, which is why farang are so often seen that way.

Yes we're seeing the same frustrated-spoiled-child reaction in the comments too.

News flash guys - we farang aren't the pinnacle of desirability among all the ladies of Thailand.

Those that are of the type Thais and other Asians consider gorgeous will usually not even consider being overtly friendly with us in public because the Thais watching might think they are as low as the skanky upcountry peasant girls usually associated with us.

And that's not even taking the sex-worker stigma into account - the beer girls already are a bit touched by that historically so many will be doubly-vigilant to ONLY be professional with farang, in fact possibly even ice-queen style forced smiles.

There are exceptions of course, in a context where they can be sure a given well-dressed polite (in their lights) farang is a true international executive businessman type or other assured high-status "catch", but run-of-the-mill situations the desirable girls know that 99% of the time they can do much better than the average westerner without all the social stigma.

Bottom line - at the high end - tall white-skinned Thai-standard beauty-queen - even the most young and attractive of us have a hard time competing with the wealthy Thais, and in many cases Japanese Korean Chinese.

Never mind the usual fat old leering guy dressed for a tip-picking session.

You maybe surprised how many farangs are married to wealthy Thai girls, yes in the same age bracket as them who aren't international businessmen.

Would those farangs be interested in beer girls, promo girls ? Well not for marriage....

"Well the girls were extremely pretty but so hollow in the brain."...!!!!

Luckily the two girls did not know what he thought about their intellect or he would have been the one thrown in the bin.

Oh, come on. Only another fifty or so and they could've splurged on a hotdog and Iced Milo at 7/11.

93% of communication is non-verbal.

You seem to have been under the mistaken impression that it was part of their job to bus the tables, while of course they would perceive that as a tremendous insult, their job is to look pretty and encourage beer sales full stop.

Your buying them a packet of crisps under those conditions may have been perceived also as an insult, since if they're going to be tipped it should be in cash. Your gesture could be interpreted as if they could not afford to buy their own, many of these girls do very well indeed, making more than most English teachers.

Plus this is very fattening food, which they can't afford to gain.

Wonderful commentary. Talk about reading between the lines. I think we must do that here, as often as possible, as things are usually not as they seem. I was thinking the same thing. Why would the fine beer girls be cleaning up after patrons. Not at all what they are there for. I think to expect these gals to be very friendly to the foreigner is asking a bit much, unless you happen to have Brad Pitt looks, which is probably not the case. Anyway, great job interpreting the situation. We can all learn from this "unspoken" language.

I usually shower my personal attendants with lobsters, caviare, and champaign! They never really appreciate it and always moan about dry-cleaning bills. huh.png

I'm not talking about reality, just appearances, as TiT.

And just trying to counteract the often-found view that just because you're a farang normal Thai girls should swoon at your feet as if Asia were still as undeveloped as thirty years ago.

And regarding these types of "professional beauty" girls, you may be a billionaire but if you're walking around in shorts and a singlet leering at them they won't give you the time of day no matter how many packets of crisps you throw at them.

I would agree with Moe666. The beer girls (any beer brand) are not waitresses. In fact I'm not sure just what purpose they are for. I haven't seen them offer any special "deals" when they are around. All of them are reasonably nice looking girls but I've never seen one that was a stunner. And, I think us women are more discerning than men when it comes to looks.

With the very odd exception, I have not seen any grossly overweight tattooed Farang women in Thailand, and certainly none with facial hair.

"So anyway. How far was the gap between the bra padding and her actual knockers ?"

Bra padding ? Do you mean those things are not actually that big ?
