A regular visitor to Chiang Mai and frequent bar companion at Mad Dog, Greg Lowndes, has "collapsed and died in Osaka. He was only 49 years old."
The quoted text is from a post his mother made on his Facebook page during this last weekend. Greg was a kind hearted soul, I will miss bumping into him both in Chiang Mai and online. JxP #177Posted 2010-01-14 16:10:39
For those who knew him. THe Scot who owns the Panniya Guesthouse near the Arcade Bus Station dies yesterday. I have not met him but he must have been a very special person as he did a wonderful job in making the guesthouse fully accessible to peoploe with disabilities.l I am sure he will be missed.

Don't forget John of expensive watch "transporting" fame. A very clever guy who got his tilac in the end. You mean John Gluck, known as 'Lucky Glucky', doncha?! Yes, nice man, sadly missed. Want to tell the story of why he was so Lucky.............? Go on..........!! #186Posted 2010-01-27 06:40:22
Yes, I could never remember his last name even though I knew him for many years.
I would have to guess on the "Lucky Glucky" thing as I never heard it. We always called hin John the Watch Smuggler and he got some Thai bigshot to escort him through customs every time he flew into the country. Would that have anything to do with his nickname? #187Posted 2010-01-27 13:58:04

RIP khunphil, I have been told that Greg suffered a stroke and passed away, I don't have any more details. If you use Facebook and have Greg listed as a friend then you should be able to see tributes and photos from friends and relatives on there. JxP #188Posted 2010-02-08 10:24:39
Don't forget John of expensive watch "transporting" fame. A very clever guy who got his tilac in the end. Another John has gone. A very short elderly chap with a slightly curved spine, very 'far back/plummy' English and courteous manner. He passed away last week in Mae Sai and the UK Consulate is in touch with his family in England. John Schweider, a former British Army officer (despite the surname!) was a regular on the bar scene with his long term partner Terry, who died a year or two ago. They said they had run successful antique shops in England, and sometimes introduced themselves as father and son. Thus they became known as 'Steptoe and Son' in some drinking circles. For a few months they ran a small bar/restaurant named The Greenhouse on Huay Kaew Rd, almost opposite The Pub. With Indian food from 'Lek' and his wife Santosh, now running Bombay Restaurant at CM Gate. #189Posted 2010-02-11 10:23:56

Post # 173 ..... would like to see more infor on this David as the name sounds familiar. There IS a 'Citylife' feature in this, as we seem to be going through a bad patch of losing interesting, even "colourful" expat characters. Yesterday saw the funeral of Arthur Edmund-Jones who, with his very pleasant Thai wife lived in Royal Lanna, the block behind The Red Lion. Arthur was noted for wearing a pill-box hat and rather military style tunic, with his name in Thai on a metal badge. He once told me that he had been a publisher in London, especially successful with a directory sold only to the drivers of black cabs. It listed all the restaurants, hotels & night clubs which paid the cabbies commissions for punters brought in. After a long time away, I last met him only 2 weeks ago by accident in the street. He looked well, and pleasantly declined to shake hands due to the possible exchange of germs. One more character down. But many more to go......... #190Posted 2010-02-22 19:49:39
Guess we need to make sure that the expats here continue to be characters.... a challenge to be sure...
Has anyone heard anymore about the guys who murdered David Crisp? Was there any justice served? I still miss him often... #191Posted 2010-04-12 02:31:25

Was a bit of a start when I saw this morning that there was activity on this thread, as there no activity for some time now . Anyhow it was a releif to see that it just conversation.
But just a few minutes ago, I was informed of another friends passing. I'm sure there are some out there who knew him.... His name is Herman Calaert, A Belgium National. I first met Herman some 10+ years ago when he first came to Thailand. He was a semi permanent guest at my place for about a year. Herman was semi retired on a Belgium Disability program. He eventually went on to open a little bar/restaurant in the Nite Market. Some years ago he opened a more traditional restaurant/bar called The Oasis. a few metres off Thaepae Rd. just west of the AIS Telephone place. I hadn't seen him for some time as we both had our own committments, but whenever I would ride by I would always see him sitting at one of his outside tables BS'ing with someone. Not quite sure of the cause of death, other than I was told that close to a month ago, he became ill and returned to Belgium for treatment and ultimately passed on a couple days ago. If any of you out there knew Herman and know more details of his more recent times please add to this thread.... In any event, Herman old friend, RIP Gonzo #195Posted 2010-06-14 18:54:38

Gonzo Was that the belgian one called "Benelux" next to the Red Lion? No MM, in the Nite Mkt he used to have a little place down in the sewer if you know what I mean. I may be mistaken but I think the place you mention was 2 guys, and they had a run in with the law catching them working without a WP. Herman had a disability caused by a motorcycle accident years ago , way before coming to CM.. This left him walking with one short arm crutch..... I would guess his age to be mid to late 50's now. His last place, The Oasis, was on the soi [1 way from Chiang Moi, to Thaepae rd.... I think the same soi as Verichai Ct. but just about 2 bldgs, from Thaepae Rd. #197Posted 2010-06-17 12:42:32
If I remember well, Herman died of cancer.
I met him once. Very kind person. RIP, Herman. #198Posted 2010-06-19 15:49:33
Yes, Herman's last place was the Oasis in the soi off Thapae Road, opposite the temple.
RIP Herman #199Posted 2010-07-03 09:15:25
