Yes, in the south near Phang Ka, but it seems that will stay a rumor for a while as there is nothing going on.

I have heard of another one that's going to be finished in a couple of year which is not just a rumor.

Why are you asking?

Pha Ngan has now got what is closest to a marina in the area, they have now almost finished building quite a large fishermans harbour in Ban Thai, that will provide all year round shelter and protection to vessels.

The locals tell me that they are very keen to atract boats to it.

There is no serious plan for a marina in samui, it is all hot air. Also something that property agents have taken hold of and shouted out about it to try and further their own interests. Any marina will need to be financed privately and I havn't heard of anyone serious about making such a large investment.

You can keep a small speed boat here or sailing boat, but this is not the place for larger motor yachts. There simply are not the services here on these islands.

Phuket has great facilities, it would be nice to see a Marina in Samui, but i'm not holding my breath. They talk about putting the marina i the South, but the best cruising grounds are to the north west.

Why wouldnt i be asking?!

Have clients interested on the island and want to invest near a future marina, whether its 1 year or 5 years away doesnt matter to them.

Also have some investors who may look into any plans for marinas.

At this moment of time there are no marin's planned in Samui.
There are many developers with great plans but as of today there are no marina plans approved by the Ta Saban in samui. there is also no approval from the harbor department.

The reason they dont approve is that the law forbids them to approve. the new construction law defines that all the northen areas around samui are designated as green zone with no marine construction apart from public piers.
As all piers in samui are by law defined as public and for public use they are built and owned by the govermant who can let private comapnies bid for a tender to run them.

The southern part o the island is designated to be a marine and fishing area but the conservation act and marine police do not approve trenching and the water level is very low.
As such only small piers on low water are possible if you can get the licence for them.

Big size motor or sail yachts can not dock on the massive concrete piers nade by the municipality as no one will risk parking an expansive boat on such a pier.

The only proper liscenced boat pier that is private is the one operated and be reconstructed by Petcherat Marina in Ban Rak that have issued a liscence for a private boat pier for speed boats and motor boats they will also have mooring boys for the larger sail boats out in the bay.
At this time they are the only liscenced pier in Samui.

So if any one is considering to get a house near a potential Marina the first request should be to see the building permit documents issued by the Ta saban and the harbor department.

Very informative, thanks.

As you say, water is very shallow in the south. I would imagine the pics in the brochure are at best extremely missleading then. Imagine how deep they will need to dig this 'marina' in order that it and the channel to the sea is deep enough during the months of the year when the water here is very low.

I think it's almost impossible that yachts the size of the ones pictured in the advert will be parked outside the houses. Maybe a few smaller speedboats and thats if they can even get permission to build on the shoreline there, which sounds unlikely from highdivers post.

I never get the impression the property agents are really interested in the Marina, the services on offer or The Yachties etc, they like marinas more as a prop for pushing there overpriced "lifestyle" properties.

I for one would love to see a decent marina, geared up for sailors, free from glitz, which can provide services for boats at a realistic cost and not some marketing agents dream which will end up with boat owners paying exorbitant prices, for non existant services.

Was told 3 years ago when I bought the house in Samui that there would be a marina - mainly bar talk though

Thinking now along the lines of a trailer sailor - which can be taken out and stored on land

Not sure about leaving a boat off shore!

I agree 100% with this - the majority of people to date have been looking at it from the perspsective of selling realestate attached to the marina as opposed to looking at it from the perspective of a boatie (and even the community which often gets lot from a well designed marina).

The second issue is really just the fact that Thailand is inexperienced in marinas and boating leading to many issues. There is not a clear proces for getting approvals, the many different parties all want to believe they hold the power and therefore get the kudos (and some cash), the general population and the administrators can not visualise what a good marina can do for Samui and therefore just think that it is a way that one person is going to make heaps of money and therefore want to stop it or ensure that they get their piece of it. etc

I understand that one of the better locations for a marina is between the Big Buddha and the new Pier (subject to a lot of dredging). It is sheltered, is close to the airport, chaweng, bophut and a lot of the existing houses on Samui, plus it is a good location from which to go to Phangnan, Koh Tao etc. The major issue with it is that there is not much land on which to build marina residences. All other marina related aspects could be catered for with the land that is available plus some well engineered bridges etc (and perhaps even some reclaiming using the sand being dredged up), but the two major reasons above have prevented it getting off the ground (well thats what I am assuming as I have not heard anything about it for a while... maybe it is secretly underway - anyone know anymore??)

Maybe it wil take one of the residence based marinas to get going and break the ice and then it will be easier to get other more boatie related ones through the process.

I am currently taking expressions of interest and holding deposits on a limited number of luxury properties in an exclusive marina development on Koh Samui. Interested parties should inquire at my office which is located next to coco blues bar in chaweng beach.

Is this guy for real???

Or is it someone else trying to make this guy look like a prick?

I've got a feeling perhaps this poster isn't who they are claiming to be.

Within these 5 high end developments, how many standalone marina berths are there? i.e. berths that I could rent long term or short term but not have to buy or rent a house or apartment first.

There are already a number of boat owners on Samui that have a house and don't want another one, just somewhere to securely locate their vessel.

Are you selling a marina or are you selling a house with a berth?

My bad, never heard it before, assumed it was someone unaware of the meaning "sole" ")

As for the "marina" on Koh Phangan, well that disaster has already managed to damage surrounding beaches, by altering the current it has helped erode sand on local beaches. Just for informations sake, the "marina" is a solid wall of dredged up coral and rock that does not allow the free flow of water but does permit a channel entrance to the shore. The solid wall has altered currents causing erosion and algae growth for the beaches nearby.

I, for one, wish they would do an environmental impact study before doing things like dredging and building marinas.

do you honestly think a project of this size could be done on this island with all the things that have been happening in recent events without an enviromental study which by the way has been completed or we would'nt be talking
