Permanent Secretary for Public Health admits avian flu vaccine close to completion
The Permanent Secretary for Public Health admits that an avian flu vaccine could be developed very soon, at a price of 50 baht per tablet.
The Permanent Secretary for Public Health, Dr. Prat Boonyavongvirot (ปราชญ์ บุญยวงศ์วิโรจน์), revealed that the development of an avian flu vaccine was in its bioequivalent test phase, which is considered close to completion. The Government Pharmaceutical Organization believes that Thailand will soon possess an inexpensive and effective drug for avian flu at 50 baht per tablet. The development of such a drug would be good news for Thailand, as foreign avian flu vaccines would no longer have to be imported.
Doctor Prat reported that during the exposure period when Thailand is not protected by an avian flu vaccine, general influenza vaccines such as Tamiflu and would have to be utilized to limit the spread of the disease until suitable countermeasures can be implemented.
The Permanent Secretary for Public Health added that the provincial public health offices would be tasked with monitoring and screening high risk areas for avian flu. Residents in high risk areas are advised to follow the reccomendations of physicians and public health authorities.

vaccins are administered by injection - these tablets are most likely to be a generic tamiflu, they just prevent virus from spreading inside the body but don't stimulate immune to produce anti-bodies. They just ease or prevent sysmptoms - but not prevent the illness.

There is a H5N1 vaccine pretty close to completion - its already registered in Europe. The adjuvent in it which is propietry makes it far better than a vaccine without - Thailand does not have the adjuvent
Further wider range clinical trials will be starting soon in many country's including Thailand. Its nothing to do with the Thai govt.s though And if the good Dr Prat (lol) really believes Tamiflu is a flu vaccine then her certainly lives up to his name and his medical qualifications seriously looked at. I will show this article at work tomorrow which will amuse all I bet ;-) #4Posted 2007-05-28 13:09:36
