In my wife's village 80 km north-east of Udon I'd say about 30% of the women frequently drink beer and around 10% are serious lao khao drinkers. Lao khao destroys people, turning them into mental and physical wrecks.
i have to disagree when the article claims Issan society bars women from having an independent role or expressing an opinion.
An Issan woman, middle aged and of sturdy girth, can be heard expressing her opinion to her lazy son or husband from a distance of several hundred metres.
