In Topic: Growing Cassava In Thailand

From the information I could find on the internet it seems that ethanol made from cassava in Thailand if the price of fresh cassava roots (not dried) is 3 baht per kilogram would cost about 28.01 per litre. I believe this price is very competitive with fuel from crude oil, therefore there is no economic reason that a farmer should not be able to get at least 2.5 baht per kilo. If the government really wants to help the farmers of Isaan, they should lower the taxes on ethanol and raise it on oil based fuels and make sure the farmer gets a fair price for their cassava.

Khonwan posted above that from Oct this year ethanol production will hopefully be supporting the price of cassava again. Unfortunately he has given up on this forum (due to some prats) so we won't be getting any more info on this from him. Just hope he is right.

The secondhand/black market for tablets will be flooded. I sense a bargain coming up assuming they do actually work.

I have grown several types of vegetables on 6 rai of our land. i change the type every year since because when i make a nice profit and people hear about it they start to grow the same thing and the marketprice plummets (sold korinder at 85bath/kilo, 20 people started growing and prices dropped to 5bath). Also grew pumpkins, fak, watermellon. Main problem iz mice getting to the crop and eating it. I use sprinklers for irrigation. It is very labour intensive, lots of weeding

What's the hot crop this year then? Promise I won't tell anyone :)

One of the most idiotic Country's on the Earth, Thailand is blessed with abundance of fertile soil and water but sadly the donkeys in Charge have no idea.

Next the farmers will be charging 3 times the price for fruit and veg because of water shortage...Limes are already going for 9 baht each that should be 1 baht..Laughable

Massive amounts of water are disgustingly wasted right at the hight of the Dry season ...The Country deserves all that it gets

Planning is obviously not in the Thai Dictionary

I keep reading all these negative comments and wondering why these people have chosen to come to Thailand.
I can't recall to seen an advertisement of how perfect this country is before deciding to settle in Thailand 18 years ago (at least it wasn't provided from my travel agent during that time).
My advise to you guys is, pack your stuff and go right back where you came from or simply accept the differences in culture.

I can only agree with you

Me too. Some people travel to Thailand with their home countries tied around their middles, which probably accounts for the pot-bellied look and chavvy tattoos so in vogue. They must be incredibly boring company since they can only talk about their origins (the implicit point of comparison for everything they say), whatever inconveniences them in their waddle from lodgings to nearest bar, and the general imbecility of their hosts.

I too agree. Many expats can't get it through there heads that everything here is not the same as back home. They feel superior living here just because they have a few bob and think they have the right to criticise everything that is not quite as good as back home. How stupid is that! Thailand is not as developed as many countries but we all have problems. The UK has imposed hose pipe bans and is also suffering from drought despite having plentiful annual rainfall. Australia is suffering from bush fires some of which are started by the authorities and then get out of control. Much of Europe has suffered from severe flooding just as they did here last year.
As to that stupid writer saying thais don't save rainfall he should get out in the countryside and see that just about every house has big vats just for that purpose. He has probably never been outside Bangkok so has no idea what he is talking about.

In Topic: The Price Of A Rai

Debt is a major factor for farmers here too. They are all in as much as they can get and can't ever seem to escape from it. They just cannot earn enough from their land. This brings me back to the original topic re the value of arable land here in Thailand and note that not one of the members here can come up with a crop that justifies paying more than 40k/rai. Water seems an important factor as if it was possible to irrigate the land inexpensivley then it may be worth paying more than 40k. Irrigating cassava can lead to much larger harvests and therefore profits.
