Investment To Avoid Thai Income Tax

2012-01-14 08:39:53

In this thread, expatman says:

If you're working in Thailand the best way to save money is by contributing to a Retirement Mutual Fund (RMF) or Long-Term Equity Fund (LTF). Check out major bank websites. You can contribute up to 15% of your taxable income to RMF and up to 15% to LTF, making a total of 30%.

The main advantage is that anything you contribute is deductible from your taxable income. If you are making more that 1 million baht a year 30% of anything over that amount is what you pay in tax, so you get a big refund on your next income tax return - doubtful the stock market will go down by more than 30% over several years, so it's hard to lose.

For RMF you must contribute every year (minimum 5,000 Baht), and cannot withdraw money until you are 55. For LTF only initial contribution required, but must be held for 5 calendar years (even 1 day counts as a calendar year, so if you contibute in Dec 2010 you can withdraw in Jan 2015.For RMF and LTF capital gains are not taxable.

You can also purchase a savings account / life insurance plan, and up to 100,000 baht is deductible from taxable income. The return on these plans is not great - about the same as an ordinary Thai bank account - but again the main advantage is the tax savings.

I would like to start saving tax in this manner. Does anyone have any advice as to which bank is best and which savings schemes they have found to be good? I noticed someone recommending Thai Military Bank in this thread for a monthly savings scheme. Any other specific banks, schemes? I don't need a monthly plan, I have plenty of savings to invest right away and would prefer to work from a single bank. Thanks in advance for any help.

Buying On The Internet--Shipped To Thailand

2012-01-07 09:14:06

I tried to search on Thaivisa for this, but no joy--sorry if it's just my bad search skills.

Has anyone had phones or cameras shipped into Thailand from, say, Hong Kong or the US? What chance of customs charging an arm and a leg?

I had a Kindle shipped here by a friend from the US through normal post and there was no problem, but I'm worried if I buy online that there will be a problem. I'm looking at a phone from fastcardtech dot com, the W7272 Android phone.

Thanks in advance for any help/experiences.

Cheap Smart Phone January 2012

2012-01-05 20:14:57

I was in the bank waiting for half an hour to get something done, and was thinking, 'why don't I have a smart phone to surf the net when I'm stuck in these stupid situations?'

I have 3bb wifi available pretty much anywhere I go, so I'm just need a cheap phone that can tap into that and a halfway decent screen so I can surf the net. Any help would be highly appreciated.

The Lincoln Restaurant--Excellent Food, Tremendous Value

2011-12-29 13:31:53

The Lincoln has about 12 or 13 specials for 110 baht including a salad. They are all are served every day all the time, apparently.

I just ate there about noon. I had the #14 special on the menu inauspiciously titled "Pork Steak."

What I got was a huge piece of well-cooked meat smothered in carmelized onions with a generous amount of gravy in a separate urn. Next to the meat was a large portion of French Fries, a good dollop of spinach, a grilled pepper and a grilled tomato. Also included was a nice dollop of mayonnaise for the fries. Yeah, it was a big plate.

I'm stuffed and satisfied. Not only was it generous, it was very, very tasty.

The only negative is that water was 25 baht and they seemed to have charged me 5 baht for ice.

Out the door, 140 baht--an excellent, excellent, excellent value for the quantity and quality of food. Did I mention I could taste some wine in the gravy?

This place deserves a lot more customers (there was only one other guy there when I ate). I will be back sooner rather than later.
