#5270093 Pattaya Is Thailand’s Role Model

Posted phl on 2012-05-03 12:57:51

Funny thing is Pattaya always gets bashed, yet its jammed packed every weekend.

Pattaya in fact does have more to offer if one bothers to look.

Of course if you travel here and stay near Walking St or Soi Buakhao, all you see is the red light district, HOWEVER

Pattaya DOES have everything for everyone, just need to open your eyes and move away from the certain areas

It has become a truism to me that people who have become expats are often, frequently, commonly, of two main types:  the type that left home because no one would have him/her, and the type who left because he wasn't having the rest of them.  The search for the latter type is frustrating and long, but often well worth it.

#5221325 Poll Of Pattaya Residents: Do You Support The Pattaya Songkran Is Too Dam_N L...

while it may well be exciting and fun for all the drunk tourists and sex workers, it certainly is NOT fun for people who actually live here and need to go to work or do whatever chores.

Not to mention that its 1 week of being short staffed(when running a business)

Following on from my separate post about where to get a decent flat white (apologies for the duplication of topic and thanks for the replies), following one of the recommendations I found the flat whites at ristr8to really top notch, a place that seems to take coffee pretty seriously as you can see from these pictures!

#5165323 Are There Any Younger Expats In Pattaya?

Posted Pdaz on 2012-03-26 10:02:18

you think it's bad now..  when I moved here in my late 20's fifteen or so yrs back it was like being an alien. Funnier still was being an expat in Singapore and Indo in my early 20's.  Pattaya has always been a place for middle aged (and older) guys. It's only in the last few years that younger guys started to visit. In the past the younger guys ( like me in my 20's) mostly visited Koh Pha Gnan, Koh Chang, Tao and Samui as backpackers etc.  Like another thread said previously you hardly ever saw families, expat wives or female tourists here.. It was just western blokes and their barfine.

#5141207 Thoughts On Falang Going A Little Overboard On The "Thai-Ness"?

Posted submaniac on 2012-03-17 11:51:13

Just going to ask people's opinions and thoughts....

And to begin with, I want to say this.  Some people on this forum I know are true long term expats.  People who have been in Thailand for decades.  People who have spent more of the years of their lives in Thailand than back in Falangland.  There are still others who, while not having spent as  much time in Thailand as others, have nonetheless spent a good chunk of years, and started families and whatnot in Thailand.   My opinion, is that most of the long term folks have a really good understanding of Thai culture, and the mindset.  These people generally don't make much ado about their knowledge and understanding.  For the most art they don't brag about how much they know, or how long they've been in country, or try to impress others with their knowledge.

Now there are others who are kind have gone a bit "overboard" in their Thai-ness.  These are the people who, in conversation with you will be trying to point out "how things work in Thai culture" to you, or on this forum, interjecting their knowledge of Thai culture on their posts.  Certain people (and I will not name names, as "calling anybody" out is not the purpose of this post) go on to post their responses in a way they think, the Thais think.  Like they post stuff that is so Thai nationalistic that maybe only 1% of the Thai people are in favor of the things said.   It's almost a challenge "I'm more Thai than you". I picture these people wearing traditional Thai clothing everyday, and walking around wai'ing lamp posts.

I have seen a couple posts that go so far towards Thai nationalism that other posters think or assume they are Thai. And alot of the stuff is like...crazy, like no Thai other than an extremist nationalist would think that. And people on here think a Thai wrote that, and that these are the opinions of a Thai when it's just an opinion of a whacky Falang. I suspect and KNOW these people have not been in Thailand that long

Just wanted to know what others thought about those who seem to going a bit overboard into their assimilation into Thai culture.

#5046165 Thai Rock Star 'Sek Loso' Apologizes For His Drug Use

take your sunglasses of you tw@t! "creativity didnt require narcotics"!?! hahahaha your not exactly nirvana or oasis mate!

Get a life man. Sek is far above Nirvana and Oasis (both of which most band members use drugs) in the eyes of the Thais.

You are a reprobate of society in my eyes. When a PERSON reaches the point where they are asking for help then we are supposed to support that person and follow his braveness for admitting his addiction.

Also being such a superstar might help other Thai's to do the same. I for one applaud him.
