#5335890 Sondhi Returns To Lumpini Stage

The one on the left was was sentenced to two years in prison after a Junta appointed Assets Examination Committee was set up especially to find something to charge him with.
He was also sentenced to two years in prison after his own party took power, after he declared he trusted in the justice system and would respect whatever verdict they arrived at, and after he, via his lawyers, attempted to bribe the judges and failed.

In the current political situation in Thailand, you would be much better referring to 1984.

Yes 1984 is another novel (often invoked but rarely understood or even read) by George Orwell but your point is obscure.

Do you mean the Big Brother aspect? If so how does this relate to Thailand now? I can only think of prosecutions for LM ramped up under Abhisit and further under Yingluck.

I was referring to New-speak, and institutions whose titles are opposite of the real interests. We have the red horde ranting about democracy and double standards with no apparent understanding of the terms, a Truth and Reconciliation Committee which apparently seeks neither, a DSI which hides crimes, a Foreign Minister appointed to be the servant of a criminal citizen, criminals appointed as MPs while the DSI fails to investigate their crimes, a fugitive criminal who is not even a member of the governing party appointing ministers while his sister performs a charade, and now a law to make any criminal behaviour legal if it can be portrayed as political.
Next will be a constitution change to make treason rewardable.

Actually Orwell never went that far, it would have made his story too incredible.

#5330525 Red Leader Takes Dig At 'Egotistic' Thaksin

Right on.  He and his family are only the 19th richest in Thailand.  Not many above them!

I think you don't understand how a "class" system works.  One of the very reasons  that Thaksin got himself into this position is that he wasn't an accepted part of the existing upper class elite in this country.  You have to be granted entry, play by the rules, become part of the woodwork, appear to serve the country and work in the interests of the elite to be part of the upper class elite.  It is a very cosy club, and money is not the only arbiter of entry.

If you don't, you find yourself, very quickly find yourself in Dubai.  No amount of cash can buy instant acceptance at the top, not in Thailand, nor other parts of the world with similar systems.  He is at best "Hi-so", not upper class.

Maybe you're unfamiliar with Thaksin's family background.  He doesn't play it up because he likes to pretend to be some kind of self made man.  He was born in to wealth and power, both socially and financially.  Thaksin is descended from the Na Chiang Mai family on his mother's side, the former rulers of the Kingdom of Chiangmai.  Thaksin is part of the elite upper class, you can not get much more elite than him.  That is why Thaksin's father was able to secure a seat in parliament in Chiang Mai, and why Thaksin was so easily able to enter politics later on.

As I recall the Red Tshirt Gang cried the worst when "nothing happened" in the first year under the previous administration. The point is that there were claims made by Thaksin that specifically gave time tables and which were promised in less than 10 months. Please re-read my post and reply specifically to the questions posed before skirting the issues and asking me what makes me sad about this pathetic government.

" It's been 10 months now and I can tell you that this has been the absolute WORST 10 months of my previous 7 years here."

Judging from the above you arrived in Thailand in July 2005, correct? Now tell me who was PM in the period July 2005 up until the coup in September 2006. Thaksin Shiniwatra is the correct answer.

Now this period, so we're told by the coup supporters, is where Thaksin finally lost it, was acting like an autocrat and the only saviour of democracy was (ironically) a coup to oust him. The subsequent years saw a disastrous military junta government who were politically inept, the Asian Financial Crisis, 2 more governments brought down, a military backed democrat party coalition with corrupt coalition partners installed, street demonstrations put down with Thais killing Thais,

And yet, the previous 10 months have been your worst here?

Absolutely. The downward spiral continues. I was actually hoping for good things after the "clone" was seated... but I was mistaken. My business has posted it's worst numbers in 6 years and no relief in sight. But I suppose you retirees who sit around and do little to nothing each day don't really resonate with the severity of the situation. So where is the Thaksin redemption promised? No where. It's all empty drivel and I am suffering tremendously because of all this Shinawatra stupidity and lunacy. He can deliver nothing to the masses and the sooner he evaporates the better off this country will be.

Ah so it's personal.

Are you kidding me "PP" ?! You just felt compelled to retort with something even if it was as banal as that, scoffing at me because my life has been destroyed because of that jerk Thaksin. Of course it's personal! What about this entire epic catastrophe to Thailand hasn't been personal to each and every person who lives here? All of our lives have been thrown into a tailspin because of him. Hmmm... I wonder if it was personal to any of the rally attendees? I beg you to go ask every single one who went if they were there for personal reasons! Geez... If you can't add something intelligent to the point, please don't say anything at all.

Let me hear from the red shirts that they killed innocent people.

Let me hear from them that Thaksin should be held to account from Tak Bai and other deaths.

If they don't accept equality in the law they have no idea what reconciliation is.

#5312682 Thai Women Extorting Money From Farlangs Through Facebook

Posted kurnell on 2012-05-19 08:21:03

I have been extorted in the past and it is no laughing matter. After an oil massage, with what seemed like several accidental brushes against my nethers, the girl asked if I wanted to give her extra for a special. Needless to say I was curious so I paid the money. Now I am so affected mentally that I fall for the same trap every time I go for an oil massage. Can someone help me?

knock on a few doors so to speak.
Maybe I could make a few bucks myself.
At least stock up the wine cellar a bit.

late last evening one of the red-huggers on this forum posted something to the extent than an entire red village had been burnt to the ground somewhere down south. Today's facts didn't quite live up to last night's advertising - a bit like PTP election promises.

Here is that post:

#5305501 Red Shirts To Mark 2nd Anniversary Of Protests

Posted GentlemanJim on 2012-05-16 16:16:04

Mods, Pleeeease stop this thread!

Nick

How come at the slightest criticism of you posts seem to disappear? Now here are some facts, not flames. Your posts and accounts are completely biased. You are NOT a neutral journalist, you have an agenda. You also try and portray that people in your profession are part of some noble cause, they are not, they are generally scum. People who take photos of people dying instead of helping them have no right to come on here and preach some kind of moral ministry. Every good photo of someone dying is taken because it will make you money, no other reason. I flew some journo's around during the Gulf War and they were absolutely horrendous human beings, desperate for us to come across bodies (especially children if we can find them! They would tell us), and better still, living but severely wounded. Please stay off this site and go and publish your accounts from your 'notes' elsewhere, where those desperate to read your ministry can do so. You somehow are being allowed to use your position to give credence to your accounts which are nothing more than biased propaganda.

Mods, after 'Nick' has inevitably hit the report button can you please consider that you are allowing someone who makes money from garnering attention like this to use the site for personal gain.

You know? It`s easy to become trapped in the phantom zone here in Thailand, meaning neither being here nor there, sort of stuck in an in-between world and go into stagnation.

I am going to be honest and say that even though I have a family here and a few very good friends, on occasions I do feel that way myself. It becomes only too easy to feel alone and isolated.

Also I am sure that many of us have the same experiences sometimes and anyone who says otherwise, I will say that I don’t believe you.

But such is life and at times when feeling down in the dumps, we must be strong and pull ourselves out of it, because no one else will.

As the wise man says; the world will appear brighter in the morning and the wise man has never been proven wrong yet.

OK our graviton, if you truly want to go to heaven, stabbing yourself and jumping off a balcony is definitely the wrong route to the pearly gates. This is what I do when I’m pissed off and feeling blue, is that I go and book myself into a cheapo hotel for the night, visit a restaurant and have a nice meal, then go and lose myself in a bar somewhere, have a few beers and bring back a bar hostess takeaway LT until the morning. That’s my idea of heaven and this is the beauty and benefit of staying in Thailand that probably would not be possible in my home country. Then the following morning I suddenly realise how lucky I am and begin to see the joy of life again.

This is doctor Beety`s prescription for you. So get your arse out there and give it some wallop.

#5291476 Chalerm: Those MPs Left Out Of The Cabinet To See Thaksin

Posted EyesWideOpen on 2012-05-11 13:37:43

Sometimes I wonder if there is a Thai word for irony.......Yingluck keeps insisting she is deciding appointments, and yet wannabe MPs keep flying over to see Thaksin.  Hmmmm....  Reminds me of the old adage that if you want to know the truth , pay no attention whatsoever to what a person says, and pay very close attention to what they do.
Thaksin's role in this government is rapidly moving into the theater of the absurd.  Imagine a corral area, with a feeding trough in the middle of it. A bunch of pigs are lined up at the feeding trough happily eating. But outside the corral are more hungry pigs lined up wanting to get inside to the feeding trough. Thaksin's role seems to be one of gatekeeper at the corral gate, as he is deciding which of the pigs outside get to go in and start feeding.....
I actually love living here in Thailand, it is the government I detest. They are a true millstone around the necks of wonderful Thai people...

Maybe they're going to revive Thaksin's previous plan of importing wild animals from Kenya so that they could be served at the Chiang Mai Night Safari's restaurant buffet

#5290253 PM Yingluck Expects Goods Prices To Fall Within Few Months

i would love to hear her lecture on economics.

wages are up, cost of goods are up, petrol is up but prices will fallPosted Image

what university did she attend?

She attended a second class university which caters to those not able to get into one of the top tier universities but still wanting an education and a future - perfect for someone that is coming up the ranks to build a future, but not really suitable for someone coming from a financially and politically influential tyrannical clan. This has caused some to question what the reason for this selection of university was made, rather than something like Harvard in terms of her degree (economics if I recall, which Harvard excels at).

The laws of economics state that price equals demand, and that as demand falls so shall price. This can be negated by supply, of which supply equals price, and as supply falls so shall prices increase. So, Yingluck (and therefore the whole government) are stating that they are expecting either supply increases, or demand decreases to influence price - or that they intend on enforcing a price maximum (the maximum price of which the government will allow its' citizens to pay for a product or service). Price maximums rarely work in the current world environment, as black markets are quickly established to cover the shortfall in supply, until demand is completely or nearly completely satisfied.

It is very unlikely in my opinion (I spend most of my days analyzing economic, commodity and currency markets) that prices will fall, and if so, they will for a very short period of time. Consider her statement null and void - and a show of her lack of understanding of the subject of her degree from her second tier university.
