I just noticed the seed question;
Yes they will grow from seeds, six to eight years until ready to produce.
You need luck in having many female trees come up instead of boys.
Hand pollination is the only way to successfully produce quality dates.
In Thailand dates mature around August/Sept. leaving you with a problem figuring out how to dry them.
Once you get over that, you will have excellent dates.

thanks for that..you know I think we may have a tree already! Looks like your pic..bought in pot 5 years ago and planted out...now about 3/4m high no sign f fruit maybe it's a girl?...still I guess many palms look similar.

You need both.
