#5328333 Google'S Chrome Browser Now The Web'S Most Used Browser

Report: Google's Chrome Browser Now The Web's Most Used Browser

Google Chrome has been long expected to leapfrog Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) to take its position as the Web’s most used browser and, according to data from Statcounter, the momentous change of leadership happened last week.

Statcounter’s findings give Google a double win, after the analytics site found that its mobile browser — Android Robot — had leapfrogged Opera to become the most popular option for mobile-based Web surfers in March.

Measuring the Web is an imprecise science, very often based on scaling up small scale measurement surveys, but the gist of Statcounter’s data over the last year indicates that Chrome use is rising of Chrome at the expense of IE and Firefox, regardless of the exact precision of the data.

#5332356 How Did Thaivisa Help You?.......

Posted theblether on 2012-05-26 04:19:10

I left Thaivisa open when I was in my office today and one of my colleagues sat down and started navigating the site. I don't know about you but I'm a little bit guilty of taking Thaivisa for granted.

Anyway, I couldn't get him off the laptop!! He went surfing through all of the forums and he couldn't believe the range and amount of forums and sub forums on here.

So it got me thinking, we have 50 odd sub-forums, covering an incredibly diverse range of topics. The amount of information on this site is quite astounding, and on top of that it's free!! Some of the contributors, especially in the sub-forums, are incredible in ther depth of knowledge and their willingness to answer queries, and they do it voluntarily.

So I know I'm going to get slaughtered for this however!!! I think we should all praise the TV team for bringing us this outstanding website every day, and take our chance to answer the question.......How did Thaivisa help you? or if you would like, praise the contributor that helped solve your problem or query.

ps   Trolls, form a queue to the left, cynics, wait your turn behind them, malcontents, your on the subs bench.

pps I know I'm going to get pelters for this topic, but I don't care. Posted Image  It's nice to take the time to show some appreciation now and again. Posted Image

Most banks and merchant services add a nominal percentage to cover their processing costs.   Usually a 2.7% charge, quoted at 3% to level out the sellers take.   Totally legal.

CMSteve,

It may be totally legal (or not), however it is generally a violation of VISA's International Operating Regulations that applies to Visa merchants, with one exception. The only time it is allowed is if, "local law requires that merchants be permitted to engage in such practice." Visa International Operating Regulations Core Principle 6.3, p. 400 (note: This link goes to the pdf file, which is large - click at your own risk) It would be my best guess that Thailand has not put such a law in place. If not, then the merchants are in violation of VISA's regulations and should be reported.

David

You made my day!! This mail just went out to Citibank with a link back to this thread. Posted Image

Dear Khun xxx,

I was at xxx Co., Ltd. today for a purchase and when trying to pay with my credit card, I was informed that I have to pay 3% extra.

I called immediately the call center and Khun xxx told me I should “renegotiate with the shop”. Not exactly the answer I expected.

Back home I called again  in and spoke to Khun xxx who was in defense of the shop, basically saying that they can charge whatever they want. When I asked whether she can provide a standard contract between a Visa Card provider (such as Citibank) and the merchant she asked me to google.

So I did. http://usa.visa.com/...ations-main.pdf

Please have a look at page 400, Core Principle 6.3

###quote###
No Surcharging Unless Required by Law
Charging for the Advertised Price
Visa merchants agree to accept Visa cards for payment of goods or services without charging any
amount over the advertised or normal price as a condition of Visa card acceptance, unless local law
requires that merchants be permitted to engage in such practice.
###unquote###

As Thai law does not require the merchant to surcharge, the shop was apparently in violation of Visa Card’s Core Principles.

When confronting Khun xxx with this, she said that this is between the merchant and their card provider and not really my business.

I like to

1)   Formally complain about the advice given by both, Khun xxx and Khun xxx as they were factually wrong.
2)   Formally complain about the lack of customer support at Citibank. As your customer I expect that you side with me and not with a merchant who is in breach of contract.
3)   Report xxx Co., Ltd. for breaching their agreement with Visa Card

Thanks for your kind attention.

I have published this here on the internet: http://www.thaivisa....8-niyom-panich/

Well here's a different point about using credit cards in Thailand.

Credit card number theft is rampant in Thailand (and other countries too of course), and It's a regulation of the Bank of Thailand that:

1. Merchants are forbidden to print all of the 16 actual digits on either the customer or merchant slips.  XXXX XXXX XXXX 1234 or similar is allowed.

2. Merchants are forbidden to record all the 16 actual digits in any other form of record keeping.

But there are many merchants who ignore the above and their printers still printing all of the 16 actual digits.

Question - where does most CC number theft start?
Answer - merchants staff  (source, my local bank manager, very large regional office of the bank).

I've had my VISA card number stolen several times here in Thailand and I can tell you it can be a long and painful experience to get it all corrected.

My local bank manager also says that if your Visa card number is stolen three, or more, times, then Visa see you a possible prime suspect.

#5333683 Pattaya (Non)Metered Taxis

Posted PattayaParent on 2012-05-26 15:48:55

When these (non)metered taxis were first announced a couple of years ago there were 27 for a trial period to see how it went. They had their licence plates numbered 1 through 27.

Although they have not been of any use to Pattaya residents as they refuse to use the meter I did notice the numbers had increased to 54.

I was shocked and surprised today when driving along Sukhumvit to see a Pattaya (non)metered taxi with number 97. And while I was wondering if there really are about 100 of these useless vehicles clogging up the roads of Pattaya, along with the 300+ useless empty songthaews around, I was passed by number 158!!

And to make it worse I spotted heading out of Pattaya number 249!

Are these vehicles still following sequential numbering? Are there really so many of these useless vehicles on the road contributing to the traffic chaos?

If so I guess the introduction of these (non)metered taxis has been a resounding success for someone, but not for the residents of Pattaya.

Bang Kwang and its ilk may not be nice places, but then again they aren't supposed to be. Prisons in some countries are rather like country clubs.

As the old saying goes "If you can't do the time...........etc"

I find this sort of view totally naive and medieval in outlook. How can we expect anyone to be integrated back into society if they are subject to criminality in prison? Take a troubled individual and send them to a breeding ground for vice and violence... great idea Einstein!

Most conveniently ignore the fact that the vast majority of people in jail are in for non violent crimes - failure to pay taxes, driving without a license etc. Most Governments would like us to believe that prisons are full of murderers, rapists and armed robbers but the facts are very different; such inmates make up a very small fraction of the total number of convicts.

One particular case will always stick in my mind - UK, painter & decorator supporting a family of 5 single handed, lost his license for speeding, continued to drive as vital to his work, caught driving without a license or insurance - 2 years in jail. His children watched in tears as he was lead away, then were promptly taken into care.

Next case - Grievous Bodily Harm, community service and a small fine, man left court laughing his head off and threatening to "do him in properly next time".

Next case - Cultivation of marijuana with intent to supply - community service and a small fine, man left court in his BMW M3 with a big smile on his face, smoking a large hand rolled "cigarette".

That is the reality of jails, they aren't filled with evil, violent cons, they're full of quite normal people who've either been unfortunate or stupid. Sadly by the time they leave they will probably have picked up a few nasty habits to bring back to society...

This painter could have sat on his arse living of benefits in a council house but instead got out there and tried to earn an honest living. He made a mistake, no one was hurt, he didn't profit from it, yet his and his families life were ruined as a result of it.

I detest those so quick to judge based on false preconceptions. If you really believe that jails should be nasty places akin to medieval dungeons with widespread torture and rape, you need locking up yourself; that sort of perverted view is, in my opinion, the real danger to society. It demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of what modern society is and should be.

Jail should be about education, rehabilitation and deprivation of freedom, no more and no less.

Jomtien would seem a better bet to me; no real competition, lots of people with plenty of money and fairly poor public transport to Tesco which is the nearest proper supermarket.

Yeah, I'm always amazed at all the wealthy looking people I see riding the baht-buses in Pattaya/Jomtien :)

#2993601 Who Is Tony?

Posted raro on 2009-09-07 00:39:37

even if you throw in a daddy General plus a so-so visited disco (aka Tony's Car Park), plus money made in the US - it doesn't pay for the cars parked in the entrance area of his disco (assuming they belong to Tony) plus the investments for two gyms, short time hotel and whatever else is Tony-branded in this town.

Anyways, none of my business and none of his business suits my needs, hence....I couldn't give a rat's a*se who he is....

Do you have any idea what a taxi charge you to take you from downtown to the dark side?  Not all of us live in downtown Pattaya.

Motorcycle taxi from Leo's to SSCC at the Crocodile Farm Road Intersection 100 Baht.

The problem is not getting back. The problem is getting INTO town from the darkside.

I hear you Raro- I used to live on the Dark side too. Maybe getting the mobile number of a few trusted moto taxi guys in your neighborhood might help.

The thing is, you won't find me on the back of a motorcycle taxi. Speaking of risk etc...THAT'S what I consider unsafe!

wheww...thanks for the heads-up! Whereas it is possible to get a Baht bus in town to back home where I live, it is more or less impossible to get into town without your own ride. Around the darkside is no public transport whatsoever so no chance to go to a pub and get home unless you drive by yourself...

Right after 'what's your name' and 'how old are you', asking a girl 'do you have a drivers license?' may become quite a popular question in the bars. Posted Image
