In Topic: Dubai 96 Hour Transit Visa On Arrival?

With respect, that is totally unhelpful advice.  The OP wants to stay 9 hours.  He has already said that he doesn't want a hotel.  Booking a hotel and paying for a tourist visa is not what he wants to do.

As far as I know, the only airline that arranges 96 hour transit visas is Emirates ( as long as you are flying with them ).  Another alternative is the visa on arrival desk  ( Marhaba Services have a visa on arrival service ).  However, that does not guarantee entry, as the decision is made there and then by UAE immigration.  Alternatively, arrange the transit visa in advance to be sure of entry.

flydubai don't fly from Bangkok, do they ?

Thanks for this info.  I have decided not to do the trip for now and will make other plans.  Flying Emirates is by far the easiest option for a visa but their prices are crazy.  I googled a bit about applying for the transit visa in advance, but that process is also unclear with lots of conflicting info - even on UAE government websites.  Apparently it used to be easy up until a few years ago.  They sure do make it a pain in ass for the countries not on the visa free list unless you use Emirates or stay in a 5 star hotel.

According to Air Asia's website the E-visa is ready to go as of April 26th.  The info is at the bottom of their homepage.  Having been to the dreary Myanmar embassy on Sathorn road a number of times, I can say this is great news.  It's not as convenient as visa-on-arrival but it's a step in the right direction.

I remember my first (and last!) trip to Vang Vieng 10 years ago.  It was just as horrible then as the article describes it now.  The absolute worst breed of backpackers stay there - in particular it seemed to have loads of types who had been in SE Asia for 2 weeks and were now experts in all areas of local culture and politics (even though they spent all their time drinking rot gut alcohol with other westerners).  Can you imagine going to a country as raw and exotic as Laos and spending entire days in cafes eating fake western food and watching bad american sitcoms?  That's exactly what it was like 10 years ago and it seems to only have gotten worse.

I just looked at this sale, wanted to book BKK to Penang but Penang wasn't part of the sale.

BKK - Colombo isn't 790, it's listed at 1990.  790 is only for certain domestic destinations.  It is pretty clear on the air asia website.

In Topic: Brown Rice Over White Rice

Brown has a much nicer flavor (and is far healthier), but as noted above, it is impossible to get in Thai restaurants of any class in Thailand - you'll get the classic 'deer in the headlights' look from the waitress, even if you ask in Thai!  When I lived in Bangkok I would usually order stuff 'bpen gap' at the places on my soi and take it home to eat with brown rice.

Thai brown rice is good, but the best is brown basmati rice from India.  Not always easy to find though, and it is relatively expensive.
