#5324034 Spend A Night Into A Tribe? Teach Them English?

"Hi. Me and my wife would like to go in a tribe near chiang rai. We would lile to exchange with them... Maybe teach them a little bit of english... We would, if possible, avoid touristics visits of tribes... It seems to be like Disneyland tours... Thank you really much for your advices in order to visit authentic tribes.

Same for monks btw. We d like to exchange with them. "

I'm weak in the type of way that I can't resist picking on this type of post, but if you want to teach anybody English, perhaps you should brush up on it.

I work part-time in journalism and it makes my skin crawl when people proclaim themselves to be English teachers but don't know that 'me' is not a subject pronoun, or use a word like 'touristics'. Does the word even exist? But more importantly it's serving as an adjective, and adjectives can never be plural. 'Advice' is a non-countable noun, but the OP has added an 's' to it. Finally, 'exchange' requires a direct object, but the OP hasn't bothered to include one.

I really don't feel I'm being pedantic here because in the OP's short post, he has made 4 basic mistakes as well as displaying some questionable style, yet he feels qualified to teach English. Cripes, it's no wonder that English teaches get such a bad reputation in Thailand.

How much orginal thinking are the students allowed during their growing up years? This may be the biggest reason behind the copycat mentality.

I see it in CM in internet game rooms, coffee shops noodle shops, resturants, etc. Its almost like they hate to see someone make a go of some new/unique idea, so they will build 10 exact copies around it, just to undermine the orginal business.

If you want her to be "happy" then let her choose what she wants based on what all her friends tell her. She must "look" good to her friends when they ask what phone/tablet she has. Status is everything with some people
If YOU want to be happy, get a girlfriend who isn't interested in such devices at all. A rare type I know, but still (just) possible. Never make the mistake of encouraging such pastimes as chatting, texting, surfing. It is a spiral to hell.

#5270032 Pattaya Is Thailand’s Role Model

Posted BigJohnnyBKK on 2012-05-03 12:42:38

I think the only positive point out of this is that Thailand needs another location that isn't completely oriented around the sex industry, but provides all the foreigner-friendly services, so that corporate event planners could (maybe) book their conferences and meetings without everyone thinking it's just a mongering boondoggle.

Individual "family" tourists with very open minds may be able to overlook the seedy side to some extent, but large international corporate planners can't leave themselves open to scandal.

Unfortunately the reputation of the whole country is largely tarred with that same brush, so they're at least pushing against a headwind in the MICE market.

Reading this article reminds me of the children's fable concerning the King's new clothes, To just talk perception, her survey says eggs are less than 3 Baht a piece where I buy my eggs,(Tesco Lotus) eggs are 45 to 47 Baht for 10 that makes them 4.5 + per egg. Limes 7 to 10 Baht a piece???? bottled water up 60%. Last year I paid 10 Baht for 20 liters today it costs me 16 Baht.

The everyday items are up,up,up. The P.M. just needs to face reality and quite trying to spin everything with her "Red" tinted glasses.

Shop at a market and prices will be much cheaper. I pay a small fraction of supermarket prices if I shop at a local market. And the food tends to be fresher as well. Just because you pay a certain price at Lotus does not mean that is the average price across the whole of Thailand. Limes 7-10 baht? LOL. I get 7 for 20 baht at the market, so less than 3 baht each. Maybe you need to shop around a little more instead of just accepting the lotus prices.

I shop at a market and prices have increased. Everything is increasing, even the kindergarten fees went up 18% yesterday.

I find it breathtaking arrogance that Yingluck will stand there and say that the people are imagining things. When was the last time she got off her corrupt backside and went to the supermarket to do any shopping? When was the last time she went to a street vendor for a bag of curry and rice or bought a pig or some pork to take to the temple? The truth is she does not have a clue. It is her perception that is totally skewed.

As for yingluck's Ministers telling her everything is fine she would do well to read this little poem "The Plan", and carry the lessons forward!

Quote

The Plan

In the beginning was the Plan.
And then came the Assumptions.
And the Assumptions were without form.
And darkness was upon the face of the Workers.
And they spoke among themselves, saying, "It is a crock of shit, and it stinketh."
And the workers went unto their Supervisors and said, "It is a pail of dung, and none may abide the odour thereof."
And the Supervisors went unto their Managers, saying, "It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it."
And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying, "It is a vessel of fertiliser, and none may abide its strength."
And the Directors spoke amongst themselves, saying one to another, "It contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong."
And the Directors then went onto the Vice Presidents, saying unto them, "It promotes growth and is very powerful."
And the Vice Presidents went unto the President, saying unto him, "This new plan will actively promote the growth and vigour of the company; with powerful effects."
And the President looked upon the Plan, and saw that it was good.
And the Plan became Policy.
This is How Shit Happens.

The biggest  ''misconception''  to date have been Thaksin and his puppet family. To think what we could have been spared had the timing been different.Posted Image

To think that  the increased prices I and my wife like many others have  paid of late are according to Yingluck and her  band of dreamers nothing more than, ''figments of our imagination.''Posted Image

Rather like her delusion that she is actually a Prime Minister and fit to lead the country..Posted Image ;

#5262298 Outdoor Wall Costs In Isaan

Posted SantiSuk on 2012-04-30 13:40:02

Agreed 1,000 baht a meter is good value even for unpainted. Within that, 250 baht an hour for family labour is also fine - possibly a little generous, but keeps things sweet.

Dont fall into the trap that everyone is ripping you off and you'll have a far healthier life here!

Posted jaapfries on 2012-04-30 08:49:45

Ideally and most importantly; the "Foundation-Beam" should be integrated with the "up-rights" or "Posts" - and this entire affair should be poured 'in-situ'. A wall constructed in this way, should not 'settle' and hence no 'cracks' should appear over time. The price of anywhere between Bt. 1,000.- to Bt. 1,200.- per lineal meter (this is rendered both sides & painted !) is very reasonable.
Make sure they put the correct thickness of Steel Rebar into Foundation & Posts !
Also; if you ever want any Lights or Power-Outlets on or in that wall (now or in future) - better to put some piping in place before they pour the posts.

you dont have the right license,10 quid,in  uk they will give you points, and insurance void, they will take the bike.  come on,its nothing even to get annoyed about.

Yep, the cops are right. Thailand has changed. In the UK, you need to pass CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) before you can even get on a bike. When that has been passed, you can ride with L plates on - which of course means you cannot take your wife as a passenger. Once you pass your full test, you can take the L plates off and carry a passenger.
i really don't see what your point is. You can't act like this in Europe and then complain, so why come here and expect to be treated significantly different.
I have no idea what your level of experience is for riding a motorcycle, but the number of unlicencsed and untrained 'tourist' riders killed in Thailand is significant.

I have a full UK car, motorcycle and heavy goods license. I also have a Thai licence.
Get some training in your home country, pass the test, then convert that to an international licence for your visits here. It will make going through the checkpoints a pleasant experience as the cops will probably click their heels together and salute you. You can then smile sweetly as you overtake the 'cool' no-shirt & no helmet (and no 500 baht) tourists.

The corruption issue is simply endemic in Thailand. It is the resin that glues together the fabric of Thai society. Every single person in a Government job is always on the make. Some examples just from our local area.

We had elections this weekend for 20 people to be elected to decide how to spend the annual town 'projects' budget which is normally in the order of 700 million to 1 billion baht a year !!!!!! It is an acknowledged fact that if you win a seat on this committee you are made, as EVERYONE gets a large slice of the pie, All contracts for work are also given to the companies owned by the senior committee members. The 'democratic' elections were welcomed by the local poor as they knew they would get bribes for votes, and they did! Our next door neighbor ' a poor but  senior lady in the village was given 5000 baht by the most senior corrupt official and told to give 200 baht to others and that they all vote for him. She pocketed the money, and voted for the other guy Posted Image. Incidentally, the most corrupt guy who has been chairman for 16 years, started with nothing and now has a personal fortune of 500 million plus! was voted out...  Posted Image

My wife's Uncle was an Army Officer who now has several very valuable properties in BKK and a nice merc. How has he achieved that on an Army Officers wage? Many years ago he was taking massive bribes to 'look over' the requirement for young wealthy kids to do their national service commitment. When my wife was young she had to 'clean' his house and she would see him bring in holdall bags full of blocks of 1000 baht notes, the bags full to the brim. He had a senior position in recruiting. Tens of millions a year!

We know local police and prison officials who all supplement their poor Government wage by taking bribes in return for any privilege they can bestow on the unfortunate.

A guy I know got a gun license the other day and avoided all the red tape by 'donating' 5000 baht to the senior official in the licensing office, and with the caveat that he must by a gun from a particular gun shop....owned by the same senior official in the gun licensing office!!!!! All 5 staff in the office get a share of the bribes, so they are all implicated so they must all remain silent!

There is simply no way to stamp this out in the next 25 years. I have no doubt that the 800 inspection officials who went into the prisons will be on a different 'bribary' tier. Thais in Government do nothing without money being paid, and then will do anything for money. And the poor remain poor. I still haven't worked out how it is possible for this country to work in terms of economics.

My My Aren't we all knowing about Thailand except how the economics work.
Are you one that accuses all waitress of being Whores.
You seem to have a positive genius for painting every one the same color. Maybe if you had not married into a corrupt family you would have a little bit of a different view of Thai's.

For myself not being marrfied into a corrurpt family and hanging around with the easly bought Tghai's I see them as people the world over some good some bad some better than others some worse than others.

Did you ever stop to think that bribes at a certain level are just the Thai way to pay decent wages that if the offenders received they might not resort to bribery. Here in Thailand it is just a way to avoid taxes that you pay back home for their services.

Red rag to Bull!!

Where have I ever said all waitresses are whores? I have never ever discussed, whores, bar girls or waitresses  on TV as I have never frequented a farang bar and have never been with a whore? At what point have I married in to a corrupt family?Did you know all 300 members of your wifes family before you married her? Why would I know of a guy living in BKK when we live 700 miles away?  I have not painted everyone with the same colour, I gave specific examples of specific people, and apart from an Uncle whom I have never met, NON are in my family. And read my post, I said they are taking bribes because of their low wages. People like you deserve to sh*t hedghogs! Where have I said I am 'hanging around with easily bought Thai's' you cheeky sod.

Hey Jim,your wife must have cleaning house in her nappies,1000 baht notes come out in 1992.Can i come to your town,my village only gets 250,000 baht,i'd like a bit of the action down your way,you seem to know all the crooks in town.

My wife is 40 what exactly is your point? Are you implying she was incontinent aged 20? She was at Uni in BKK and had to clean her Uncles house in order for him to give her free lodgings while she studied. Happy with the detail now? We are not all married to 19 year olds you know. Sorry to disappoint you but there is no point coming down, afraid I don't know the crooks. I don't know the election officials concerned, I dont know the Uncle who lives 700 miles away, I know of but do not socialise with, speak to or any other action that would make me familiar with the police or prison officer concerned, and the only one I do know well is the old lady who took 5000 baht off the crooked politician for her vote and then voted for the other guy. She isnt a crook she's a bloody hero.
