Lynmark, a tip for you. Over the last three years I was a regular at the Chinese Consulate in Bangkok, nothing was ever the same for each visit. Different regulations and requiments etc. Not to mention the long lines and waits
My passport was beginning to fill up with Chinese visas and applying got harder not easier. I then decided that for future applications I would spend two days relaxing in HK and aply there. This I did and never had any hassles and even got multi entry visas.
Visas are issued by any ChinaTravel Service and they have offices all over HK.

I have said this before and I will say it again.
Hong Kong hotels are total rip offs, I lived for 20 years in HK way back and even then accomodation was expensive.
My suggestion is get yourself a multi entry China visa, and base yourself in Shenzhen which is the adjoining city to HK, in fact if it wasnt for the border crossing Shenzhen would be part of HK.
The hotels in Shenzhen are better and a lot cheaper. The 5 star Shangri La right next to the LoWu border crossing is less that 1000HK, and there are a host of hotels within easy walking distance of the border. The trains from the border into any part of HK you want to go run every 3 minutes, cheap and efficient.
If you want to visit Macao there is a ferry sailing regularly from Shekou which is part of Shenzhen.
Even every day living in Shenzhen is a third of the price of HK, its a no brainer in my opinion.

In Topic: Run Flats Suck

I just purchased a BMW X5 SUV and that too is fitted with run flats, but in the boot there is a smaller non standard spare wheel for extreme emergency use.
A run flat can take you around a further 60kms at low speeds, but the weird "spare is", i assume ,if you are out in the boondocks.
For the record the ride in the X5 is extremely smooth and quiet.

Sorry to say, no such thing as a cheap/ish hotel in HK, escpecially near the airport which is in a very isolated location. All hotels around the airport are international brands. It would be easier to advise if you told the arrival and departure times.
