You sound like you are relatively new to Thailand so its good that you are seeking the advice of others.  I like everyone else here has heard sin sod go for 20k to 300k and in some cases much much more. My wife before we were married was offered 1,000,000 bt for marriage and Ive heard other women now asking for 1m bt which is obsurd.  I was lucky she loved me and wasnt just chasing money.

The woman you met sounds nice and I wish you the best what ever you do so I will give you my thoughts for you do with as you please.
A) She doesnt speak english and though you seem like a nice guy to her she really doesnt know you or you her. You understand this but her parents are pushing for a commitment. This clearly demonstrates that this girl is under pressure from the parents to marry you so there will be a farang in the family to take care of everyone. Never believe that YOU are MORE important that her family. She will marry you just to take care of her family. Doesnt mean she wont grow to love you or take care of you but dont under estimate the pressure she is under. On the other hand ... in the past and currently there are many aranged marriages so if a girl gets to choose her husband ... it may not be a bad thing.
Posted Image If you do become engaged you will want to discuss the sin sod before hand so you will know what you are in for ahead of time. I agree with most here. If you do pay a sin sod it should be around 100k. If there is more to the story such as ex husband, kids, less than stellar past or what ever reason she isnt married you would have negotiating room. Im all for not paying more than you should but keep in mind the more you are willing to give the more proud you wife will be of YOU.
C) Many farang new to Thailand want to marry the quiet, soft spoken, demure, subserviant asian woman they have come to know. Dont fall for this!!! If you think Thai women are quiet, shy, soft spoken etc.....You have never pissed one off!!  If you have never seen or felt the turmoil caused by a beautiful 5ft 100lb pissed of wife hell bent on chaos and distruction with YOU in mind........ummmm yehhh ...welcome to Thailand.  You will date a kitten and marry a tiger.
D) Dont forget the cultrual differences. She will do things that make no sense to you but make perfect sense to her. There will be times when you have to bite your tongue when staying at her house. Its better to ASK her why she did something and learn about the lifestyle.
   1) She will see and REMEMBER EVERYTHING
   2) She will judge you based on this
   3) Study the language. It will earn you some respect with her family and in her village.
   4) If she is truely poor .. she may see you trying to take care of her like nice hotels, restaurants etc as wasting money or not being  good  with money.  However you buying nice things for the family ...completely different
   5) Expect a double standard. You can both do the same thing but when she does it ... its different.
   6) Always give her your opinion if she ask a question. "Do/Wear whatever you like" will be taken as indifference or lack of caring for her. Always tell her what you think she should do.

All this being said.... Thai women are wonderful creatures that will make you life a joy. My wife is the most wonderful woman I have EVER known. I am a very lucky man.   Good luck to you ... take is slow....pay attention and dont let you heart over run your head.

Ajay,

Excellent advice! however, whilst my experience is very similar we differ on one point, I married a Tiger that has become a very contented, SECURE, happy kitten who is the best wife I can imagine.   I gave her 100% trust and security, I think some posters on TV miss the power of this and wonder why they get the negative experiences.

OP if she turns out to be "the one" be brave enough to treat her as an equal and your life will probably be great, like all things in life you'll get out what you put in.

#5129770 Isaan Farmers Ideas Exchange Meeting No. 4

Posted IsaanAussie on 2012-03-13 07:23:32

I am still not able to confirm our attendence but would suggest to others that these meetings have been very helpful information exchanges and not hard work at all. This one is not to be missed for anyone interested in worm farming or using the products on your gardens. Get there if you can one and all.

well its another day in paradise im sitting on the balcony with a cold one [beer that is] and watching the world go by, the motorbike taxis are are clapping there hands at anyone who walks by trying to drum up some work. Last night was a good one started off at the heartbeat bar they have a live band and some very pretty girls who love a chin wag so i had a few mig lights and then off for some balloon hunting. found a bar covered in balloons it was a girl called kois birthday plenty of dancing loads of thai food yadda yadda i then started to crave a bit of coyote dancing so off i goes to a bar on the 3 road and into a coyote style bar and got a little star struck with one of the dancers trying to tell myself just leave it mick youve got the beer goggles on, when this girl finishes her dance she plonks herself on the stool next to me and we get chatting and drinking turns out her name is lucky  before i know it im dancing with lucky in the bamboo bar its tequila slammer time and i feel like a teenager again. end of the night get some food off a barrow pad ka pow moo and back to the hotel arrange to meet lucky later on. Now for the bad news my wife is trying to arrange for her surgically enhanced sister to chapparone me on my trip, now her sister is a bit to touchy feely for me as when shes drunk shes the biggest flirt ive met, im lucky theres a wedding going on in her sisters village that will keep her busy for a few days, now im as red blooded as any man and her sister would temp the devil himself but its a no no her sister has broke more hearts than valentino shes got a five bedroom pad paid for by a dutch guy who works in saudi and more plastic in her body than an airfix model. Right i know what im going to do im going to hua hin and as lucky my little coyote dancer said to me i know alot about bars mr mick im going to take her as my coyote dancer/property adviser that looks so good in hot pants the sooner im out of pattaya the sooner the mrs will calm down a bit.As for lucky im thinking of employing her and her little wiggle as a cashier in the bar as shes a clever girl when we first met she told me my name is lucky,  GOOD LUCK GOOD  property advice

I think this fellow has strayed on to the wrong type of forum - shouldn't this garbage be on some sex-based site where all the punters brag about their exploits?
Can't really see what benefit there is to the readers of this section to read of some bloke gabbing on about his night life antics.

#4992793 My Top Ten Reasons

Posted CDB on 2012-01-20 15:39:03

1. Foreigners can’t own anything in our own name.

Many businesses can be 100% owned through getting BOI privileges, which can be done in a few weeks. Thailand is the 14 easiest place in the world to do business.

We can can own houses, condos, and vehicles without any problem. There are various ways to hold land without owning it. Or we can own it through a company, or take a long term lease.

Hardly a reason to leave

2. Visas & Work Permits.

This is an issue for foreigners in most countries. Most companies handle the paperwork for the employee. Permits are issued much faster than before.

3. Work is very minimal except for Teaching jobs that pay crap.

There are plenty of well-paid jobs for qualified candidates. Sometimes the pay is lower than than in more developed economies, but why should it be otherwise? That's a trade off with lower cost of living.

Is there any country which has low cost of living and highly paid jobs for foreigners with minimal skills?

4. Double pricing.

Pretty mininal outside tourist areas and doesn't affect the bottom line in terms of cost of living. Thais also try to overcharge wealthy Thais. It's not really anything to do with your skin color, but perception of relative wealth.

National parks will not double charge if you show your social security ID or work permit or residence permit.

5. Government controlled Internet and websites being blocked.

It's difficult to address this without breaking board rules, but most foreigners know exactly how to see any site they want.

To avoid seeming like a personal attack, I can only describe people who do not know how to access all content as "less able" in matters of computer usage

6. Language barriers (Worst country for English speakers.)

The English levels of Thais have greatly improved in the 20 years I have been here. But far from there being language barriers, if you speak and read even intermediate Thai, you will get a level of acceptance and friendliness that does not exist in most other countries for speaking the local language. In China and Spanish speaking countries, foreigners whos speak some of the local languauge do not get this "benefit".

Complaining about the local people not speaking your language seems rather narrow minded to me

7. Corruption is everywhere.
8. Politics create instability.

Isn't this equally true of any developed country, especially those cheaper neighboring counties?

9. Things are getting MUCH more expensive then neighboring countries.

It's great that the difference between costs of living of emerging economies and the West is narrowing every year. Not only is it good for Thai people, but in the end these new markets will help revive Western economies.

No longer can working class farang arrive in Thailand and act like "the big man" and impress the locals with his cash.

Thais are no longer enamoured with all things farang as they were perhaps in the past. But they still see many favorable things, and a large amount of Thai women still are attracted to farang (not just for money).

What's the problem with that?

10. We are no longer welcome here

If you mean that Thais are fed up with whinging denigrating foreigners, that is probably true....
