#5291575 Bangkok Motorcycle Taxis Seek Help Over Gangsters

The greatest irony for me is the fact that Thai motorcycle taxi drivers are complaining about gangsters. From countless reports of group violence, along with my observations and experience, these guys are gangsters themselves...!!

My experience with them is that there are indeed a couple bad apples among them, but the majority are hard working and friendly guys.

#5116887 Fatal Mugging In Bangkok Caught On CCTV

Posted noitom on 2012-03-08 07:28:27

This is a sad case. The poster who previously noted the question - "why would four men stab a loner to death instead of just quickly overpowering him and taking his money and watch?" This act separates a "mugger" from a "murderer." All points police action to hunt down and capture these four murderers should be underway immediately! Professional police sketchers should be at work producing as close to likenesses as possible, wanted posters should be put up around the area and police stations, reward should be offered for "information leading to...." The newspaper should do its part by publishing the police sketches. Common Bangkok, get with the program! No other thug criminal murderers will take you seriously without serious action. The police and press must be relentless about this.

#5018723 Russians Trapped In Pattaya Following Collapse Of Tour Company

Posted z12 on 2012-01-31 15:46:45

"stranded in Pattaya as their return air tickets and hotels they were staying at have not been paid."

So an airline will fly you to Thailand without a paid round trip ticket? What airline does that?
What hotel lets a large tour group check in without payment upfront?
I need to start a tour company, collect the money and walk away.
Another scam for the LOS.

Sounds like it's partially the hotels fault for not getting payment in the first place. Business is business. Stuff happens.. If they were smart enough, they would have the money already!

Why is this so complicated?

Does anyone know if the tourists are refusing to pay their tabs?? If the hotel owners are that concerned that the tourists won't pay their tab, have the police on standby! I'm sure they get enough tea money from the hotel already!

Did the hotel owners have a contract with the tour company? If so, the hotel owners are F'd. Give the tourists back their belongings and stick to your piece of paper!

From what i gathered from the article, i have to agree with this.  The hotel's anger is to be directed to the tour company, not the guest.  It was the hotel's responsibility to collect payment from the tour operator for the room and any related expenses.  The guest would only be responsible for anything not covered in the tour package.

The hotel manager made some type of asumption with the tour company, perhaps to collect delayed payment.  Now that the hotel's assumption did not pan out (bankrupty or whatever), he's trying to "get something" from the guest by unlawfully holding their property hostage.  the hotel's only legit remedy towards the guest was to explain bankrupty and evict the guest early or not let them stay in the hotel at all from day 1. The hotel manager refuses to take responsibility for his poor business decision.  I hope 0 of the hotel guest assist in victimizing the hotel, although that may difficult if they have something valuable like passport.

Now if the payment contract was between the guest and hotel, circumstances would  different....although i dont know of a single hotel that would allow you to stay more than 1 day late without payment, unless you were already a long-term guest/other pre-arrangements.  Hotels/guesthouses are on prepaid basis.

That is terrible for them and even worse the Hotel refused them access to their own safe-boxes, can they do that?
If you were the hotel owner and someone didn't pay his bill, what would you do?

And a devil just got his horns.
They are the victims, any hotel manager worth a salt would know this and allow access to their property and provide them with every convenience necessary until things are straightened out. And a bottle of vodka.
And, by "straightened out" you mean . . . ?
Sounds like it's partially the hotels fault for not getting payment in the first place. Business is business. Stuff happens.. If they were smart enough, they would have the money already!

:D @the Americans :D

I always thought they needed to have everything explained in extreme detail as they either don't know or cannot think for themselves...

Or maybe I looked at too many labels and signs in the USA and that it is in no way reflective of the way Americans are, not sure though...

Oh hel_l no.

Drop the attempts at political correctness Thailand. It doesn't suit you.

I'll respect this smoking ban about as much as I respect any smoking ban.

You selfish bastard. I remember the time when one of your kind was in the crowded, hot market that is JJ, and when my wife walked past she happened to brush past one of your stinking smoker friends, burning not just a hole in her dress, but also her leg. The perp that did this, well all he could do was walk away.

Its not just the extra added unpleasant smell that smoking adds to the mix, it is the danger of someone getting burned, or their clothes being damaged. Please dont let the fact that there are children there too, and guess what, their eyes are somewhat in the line of fire too (pun intended), to receive a cigarette to the eyes or face.

So if any one of you smokers is so callous to believe that you have a right to smoke in such a confined area as JJ, and that you have the right to wave a smoldering pseudo weapon around in such a place, then you had better not run into me!!!!!!!

The smoking ban in JJ should be reinforced with more than a 2000b fine, but for the damages that a smoker causes to another when contact is made with the cigarette itself.

I agree entirely, but there is not only the danger of being burnt in a crowded place, there is also the inhailiation of the smoke.  My Wife died of lung cancer in 2004 (just when we were going to retire and come and live in Thailand) and yesterday I was informed by my Best Friend that his Wife had also died of lung cancer.  Neither of these women had smoked during their lifetime, so if I am categorized as a zealot for hating this disgusting habit, I am happy to be a zealot, but look forward to the day when the World wakes up and bans smoking period.  A lot less people will suffer indescribable pain through cancerous diseases and their nearest and dearest will not mourn their loss for the rest of their lives.  I would encourage these smoking "jobs worths" to think of the damage they cause to others whilst they are selfishly puffing away and killing themselves, which of course they are entitled to do, but why do you have to do it to others?

having been to JJ market only once, i know that such place should be a first candidate to be made a non-smoking area.
Way to go Thailand!

To all smokers.

You enjoy smoking cigarettes with all the carcinogens, tars, chemicals and impurities.  A by product of your smoking is that my hair and clothes stink just like you do, and you do that without my consent..

I enjoy a beer.  A by product of my enjoyment is urine.  Would you have any objection if I pi$$ed over your hair and clothes without your consent??

Have a think about it.

There is no doubt smoking is an anti social habit. It pollutes, smells on the skin of all who undertake it and it causes a huge drain on finances in medical markets for those on social security and health insurances.  The public at large pas for the billions a year in medical losses trying to treat these people when it is time for them to check out.  Smokers are generally unaware of their environment, the discomfort of others and neither care nor wish to alter the situation.

The sooner cancer kicks in, the pain the suffering that goes with cancer, and the final journey up the Thai chimney to join their friends, the better.  Ban them? - who cares.  Sooner they all die the better we are off.  The only things that pisses me off is the tobacco companies and the addictive substances added to pure tobacco.  And yes I was a smoker (heavy) so have been there done that - but the journey up the chimney will have to wait now.

The march of the zealots continues.....

Zealots my cute little hiney, it is about time that this filthy habit is banned from public space. If you want to poison the place, do it in your own house...

Any farang that is so stupid to smoke, deserves to be fined the max amount

And I bet you drive a car. Haven't you noticed they stink and maybe you ain't heard they kill millions every year.

Rumor has it they also contribute to global warming, but the self-righteous drivers feel free to slag off smokers. Why?

Pots, kettles, and black springs to mind.

Where the hel_l do you smokers get off. What you are doing is well proven to be against the best interests of your health, and yet you seem to have this belief that if you are doing it to yourselves, you have the right to do it to those that dont want to smoke.

You want respect huh??????   Well how about this,,,,,,. The people that dont want your second hand smoke will always respect that you want to smoke, and will often leave you alone to do it.

How about as smokers you start respecting the fact that this is unpleasant to many people, and so long as you continue to disrespect them, they will disrespect you, argument continues,,,,,,,.

Start respecting the fact that not all people want to smoke, and that when you smoke, all the people around you have to breath your second hand smoke. Move away from them and the problem ends, no more argument, period.

This is what they are trying to do at JJ, I am hoping that they are doing the right thing and providing areas where you can smoke in peace and enjoyment as you so rightly deserve, but please dont force your smoke on those that don't want to smoke.
