Dinosaur Fossils

2011-12-19 17:03:07

My son wants to see big dinosaur fossils / skeletons, I am trying to find out if there is anything like that on display anywhere in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai?

Online I can only find the two big dinosaur museums in Issan, but we are planning to visit Chiang Mai soon so it would be more convenient if there was anything like this in Chiang Mai.

Where Can I Hold Thb Outside Thailand?

2011-10-28 13:12:18

I would like to buy THB with AUD because the rate is good now and there is a high possibility that I need THB in the future.

In case I don't need the THB I would easily like to change them back however, so I do not want to send AUD to my Thai account because it would be hard to send them back out of Thailand.

Is there any foreign bank that offers a THB denominated account outside of Thailand?

Foreign Mother Buying Land In Name Of Thai Child

2011-07-15 11:54:12

This thread should be used to discuss the possibility of buying land in an underage Thai childs name, where the foreign mother has sole custody rights due to being unmarried.

So this is different from most cases where a foreign father would like to put land in his Thai childs name, while he might only have shared custody with the mother.

I have asked several lawyers so far and some say a Thai child can not buy land until 20 years of age, but some Thai lawyers on the other hand told me that a Thai child can buy land and that the parent would need to sign on the childs behalf. Normally a Thai person would need to sign, but in the case where the sole custody is with the foreigner, it might be possible for the foreigner to sign.
It also seemed to be important for some reason that the Thai child has a Thai birth certificate.

The downside in any case is the difficulty to sell the land until the child turns 20, only with court approval in the interest of the child. But it would be no problem to rent out the house.

The setup was proposed like this:

If buying only land, the Thai child can buy it and the foreign mother can sign. A lifetime usufruct can be registered on the land title with the beneficiary being the mother, as added security and any building permit and house can be in the foreign mothers name.
In addition a will can be set up to pass on the land (under 1 Rai) to the foreign mother in case something happens to the child. (Somewhere else I read that a child under 15 can not make a will, so I would like to double-check that again.)

Are there any other eventualities to consider?

Do you know any Thai laws that would prevent this from being legal?

Something I would like to double check, how will the usufruct be signed between the child and the foreign mother, if the mother signs on behalf of the child, then both signatures are from one person? Or is there nothing to be signed for a usufruct, just pay for the entry in the title deed?
Same goes for the building permit / house registration, if the mother signs on behalf of the child, both signatures are from the mother, is this possible?

Do Thai pharmacies have these special metal combs for combing out head lice / nits?

Suggestions For New Car

2011-05-20 04:01:56

I am thinking about getting a new car but I have no idea what I should get.

I used to drive luxury sedans, V8 with cruise control and very stylish and comfortable but that was in countries with good, wide roads.

Here in Thailand I drive mainly in Phuket for shopping (maybe 40 - 120 km per week) so I did not really like to use a pick-up like a Vigo because of the parking. I have been using a Mitsubishi Evolution. For Phuket and driving between provinces it's been ok, although the hard suspension hasn't been too comfortable on the bad roads when driving say between Phuket to Bangkok. After arriving at night I could still feel the vibrations of the road when lying in bed.
My driving style also changed to be less risky since having a child so the sporty car is not that useful anymore, it might stay in the family though.

The thing is that I also drive to visit family in the countryside a couple of times per year and I have to go places without roads, the dirt tracks are in such a bad condition that I can't use them with a sedan especially not a low one.

I need 5 doors though and I want a comfortable interior, I would prefer automatic, something where I can turn the 4x4 on and off I guess.

I like things like comfortable seats, armrests,  cupholders, automatic lights, good safety (crash safety, child locks)  and being able to put the seats down to carry large items easily. I also like it if the car is big enough inside to sleep in it.
I like controls on the steering wheel, I like it if it's easy to get in and out of the car and doors that open easily.
I like white as a color.

I am really lost as to what cars I should test drive.
I would probably just try a camry, but there are several relatives I would not be able to visit in my car so it doesn't suit me.

Now I am reading about the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport but I have not yet looked at it or driven it and I am worried it's a bit too big for everyday use. A 3 door would not suit me at all though.

I like Mitsubishi because I have been happy with their service department in Phuket and that is another very important thing to consider. They even handled service professionally on a car that I did not buy there and that was a grey import from Japan and never even sold in Thailand.

Any suggestions welcome.
