#3795206 Crackdown On Foreign Criminals In Pattaya

Can I ask a straight forward question?   If you weren't a criminal, fat old balding desparate bastard, sex tourist or a pedophile why would you even be in Pattaya?  Simple question needs simple answer.
Is this a rhetorical question?

Are you suggesting that I go live in the back of beyond in a wooden house on stilts, without aircon or a mains sewage system, without a splendid choice of several first class golf courses nearby, where the nearest supermarket selling food that I like to eat is at least 30 miles away, that I sail my boat on a rice paddy, be constantly pestered by creepy crawlies and other fauna, and not have a wide selection of other farangs whose company I can enjoy ? Should I live in BKK and choke myself to death?

The majority of my friends and associates have put on a few extra pounds. Is this supposed to be reason enough to ridicule them? Shall we see what sort of figure you cut in your later years? Most civilisations revere their elders and acknowledge that they are a source of experience and garnered wisdom. Presumably that has passed you by. Loss of hair as one ages is a natural phenomenon. Most intelligent people do not consider that to be a subject for risible comment or barely veiled insult.  I know of nobody in LoS a state of desperation; I knew quite a few inthe UK though. Illegitimacy is commonplace these days in the UK.. There are single parent families wall to wall and whether one was born in or out of wedlock ceased to be of interest to anybody several decades ago.  Thus your second sentence may well give rise to the sentient here thinking what a total pompous ass you are. I do hope that this simple answer is simple enough for you to understand.

What is it about your type who constantly denigrate Pattaya? Have you ever been outside of the area bounded by the beach and 3rd Road? Why not pay a visit and ask one or more of the many farang residents to be found shopping with their ladies in one of the supermarkets or malls and ask them which of the four categories that you have decided to put them in applies to them? I trust that you will enjoy the knuckle sandwich.

#3795174 Crackdown On Foreign Criminals In Pattaya

Posted geriatrickid on 2010-08-04 19:51:54

It is a step in the right direction. The  unit that is leading this effort has the task of dealing with  criminals from foreign origins. They are not there to find  Mr. Thaksin or to deal with  police corruption anymore than the immigration authorities in Australia, the USA, EU etc. are responsible for  dealing with local criminals.  Be fair. Pattaya is synonymous with debauchery, child exploitation and  the palce to hide out out if one is on the lam.   Decent people that reside in Pattaya suffer because of that well deserved reputation. Now that someone is finally acting to deal with a situation that has caused serious problems for Thailand, the naysayers come out of the woodwork.  Give the authorities a chance.   If they can get  even a few  scum off the street, it will make living in Pattaya a lot easier for those people that are honest and decent.
So much low hanging fruit that the authorities need only  id  patrons in a few of the more disgusting of the bars and I'm sure they'll identify people that are on the sex crime registeries of their homelands or that have  criminal dossiers. I am looking forward to the pictures in the PDN. Posted Image

#3789370 Stem-Cell Patient Dies In Bangkok

Posted geriatrickid on 2010-08-02 09:14:02

Nothing like reporting  events after the fact. Is the sudden interest because of a complaint to Medical Council? This article was published 4 months ago based upon activity that is almost a year old.  Get your umbrellas ready boys and girls, the sh*t is going to hit the fan. My understanding is that there is an  allegation of a breach of ethics.

There is a another thread running in respect to the attempt to make Phuket a medical tourism thread. In that thread I have pointed out and emphasized the approach to bioethics in Asia. Here we see a clear example of a questionable activity.  The Medical Council of Thailand must act and hold a thorough investigation. If the physicians involved have violated treatment ethics as I believe they have, then they must be sanctioned. However, I will be very surprised if that happens.

Before anyone jumps over the two authors of the study, please note they only removed the kidney from the deceased patient and reported their findings. They did not kill the patient. These are two reputable pathologists and have  distinguished careers, so please, no bashing.

Ok, so here's the abstract;
Angiomyeloproliferative Lesions Following Autologous Stem Cell Therapy

Duangpen Thirabanjasak*, Kavirach Tantiwongse and Paul Scott Thorner*Departments of *Pathology and Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand; Division of Pathology, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada; and Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada   Received for publication November 16, 2009. Accepted for publication March 28, 2010.

Some reports suggest that autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation holds potential for treatment of renal diseases such as lupus nephritis, but the safety of delivering various stem cell types (hematopoietic, mesenchymal, and endothelial precursors) is not well established. Here, we report a case of lupus nephritis treated by direct renal injection of autologous stem cells recovered from peripheral blood. The patient developed masses at the sites of injection and hematuria. We suspected transitional cell carcinoma but nephrectomy revealed that the masses were angiomyeloproliferative lesions. We believe that this previously undescribed pathologic entity is stem cell–derived or –induced. The biologic potential, including the neoplastic potential, of this lesion is unknown. This case illustrates that the development of angiomyeloproliferative lesions is a possible complication of stem cell therapy.

In plain English'
They found that the patient had not benefited at all from the treatment. In all likelihood, the treatment killed the patient.
What the nation did not report;
The authors conclude that their findings should serve as a warning to clinical investigators that the development of blood vessel and bone marrow masses may be a possible complication of stem cell therapy. And they said more work was needed to identify why the masses formed, and how this could be avoided.

Writing in the same journal, Andras Nagy, of Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital, and Susan Quaggin, of the University of Toronto, said caution was needed over stem cell therapies - especially if they were being offered by unregulated private clinics. Premature enthusiasm and protocols that are not fully vetted are dangerous and result in negative publicity for the field of stem cell research, and more importantly, may result in disastrous outcomes with no benefit to the patient. Although there is promise, a large gap still exists between scientific knowledge and clinical translation for safe and effective stem cell-based therapies.

Does anyone  think that the private hospital undertook an ethical review prior to undertaking the treatment? Where did they harvest the stem cells from?
Who knows? Nothing is public.

And why does the Thai Medical Council need a kick in its pants from researchers in Canada to  respond?

#3780822 Human Traffickers Prey On Vulnerable In Thailand

Posted prakhonchai nick on 2010-07-29 10:53:33

No trafficking of Thai women goes on without the assistance of "the untouchables". be they Police officers, Army generals, Politicians or whoever. They can and do get away with it. Thailand is sadly as corrupt if not more so than when I first arrived more than 20 years ago.

Punishment should be made to fit the crime, and NOBODY should be exempt. In the UK even the Royals are occasionally brought to book for motoring offences.

Human trafficking is basically a death sentence, since unless the women can escape they are in real danger of contracting AIDS. As such those that are involved in trafficking should themselves receive a death sentence NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE

Very good reading. very comprehensive. Unfortunately it is in Thai Perhaps google translate may help.   .    http://www.manager.c...D=9530000098345

Poor Child.  First she states: The ICJ ruling is not fair, said the PAD.  I'm assuming, although I could be wrong, that she agrees with PAD and that statement.  Now she's putting links to The Manager, which is owned and run by Sondhi of PAD.  She apparently has no idea that The Manager is a totally and completely biased media outlet that reflects the views and beliefs of Sondhi and PAD, with very little truth in it.

I wonder if she, and others, realize that should PAD somehow come to power, that they would set Thailand backwards about 100 years.  Sondhi has stated, more than once, and on national television and in the other news media that the "rural poor are too stupid to vote".  Now, it that isn't a racist comment about his own countrymen and women, then I don't know what is.  Does she realize that PAD wants to do away with Parliament as it is now and replace it with one which is 70% appointed, and only 30% elected?  The 70% appointed would be appointed by the elite, the military and the academics, while the 30% that is elected would only be voted on by the elite, the military and the academics.  Anyone who does not hold at least a Bachelor's Degree would NOT be allowed to vote and have no say so in who runs the country.

People's Alliance for Democracy is more a case of Politburo AGAINST Democracy, and more Fascist  than Democratic in nature.  Their favorite trick is to try and stir up "Nationalism" by mixing facts and fiction, and THEIR version of the truth in an effort to further their own goals, which have absolutely NOTHING to do, or benefit, the average Thai.

I apologize to the monitors for getting somewhat "off topic", and hope they will forgive me.

#3774879 The Adversity Of Blanket Travel Advisories : Bill Heinecke

Posted geriatrickid on 2010-07-26 19:49:40

Self-serving crap as some have noted.
I agree.

Mr. Heinecke's letter is presumptious, arrogant and written from the perspective of a company that exploits the conspicuous consumption product niche. Nothing wrong in making a profit through commerce. However, one must draw the line when a vested interest  attacks  public servants that  are carrying out their moral  and legal obligation to protect the safety of their nationals. I am sorry Minor's  shareholder's investments are not making the hefty profits they once did, but that is all part of the business decision to take on a market with known inherent political risk.

Mr. Heinecke, picked Thailand because of its business opportunities. The characteristics that made it a lucrative market also have a negative side which he was well aware of.  Do not blame foreign governments for doing their job and do not blame them for Thailand's poor brand image. One would think that a fellow like Mr. Heinecke that makes his living from marketing would appreciate that the perception of Thailand by  decision makers in foreign governments is that Thailand is a corrupt haven for  criminals and sex perverts. Deal with that image first and then maybe foreign governments will be more willing to respond to the Heinecke position.  Some people do not want to hear this, but it is why some get the  extreme examinations of our laptops, phones and luggage when we arrive from Thailand. How many people get similar customs  attention when they arrive from Denmark or Austria?

The airport siezures and and associated travel disruptions  imposed  significant costs upon foreign governments. The Thai government has not responded appropriately to the concerns previously expressed by the governments now posting travel advisories. What did Mr. Heinecke expect when  the multiple cautions and warnings from the delegation of ambassadors was rebuffed and dismissed? The  foreign ministry representatives  were not expressing their views but those of their national governments that had a duty to protect their nationals. The travel advisories are the direct result of the Thai government's inaction and neglect of the concerns expressed. It is incredibly stupid to raise the Toronto G-8/20 incidents as a justification for his position. In Toronto, although there was  violence, there was no death, no seizure of airports and no long term threat to the population. The Canadian police services responded to the incidents and the court system moved in a fast and transparent method to address the issue. The use of Greece as an excuse is equally pathetic. Europeans already know that Greece is a basket case and do not need to be warned. The diffference as Mr. Heinecke well knows is that in  Toronto and Greece, the  riots were  directed at specific targets. Civilians were not and are not subject to random bombs or tossed grenades. Foreigners do not encounter shakedowns from the police when they visit Canada. Neither Canada, nor Greece has an ongoing  violent rebellion going on  in a large part of their countires. When is the last time a teacher or public health official was decapitated by terrorists in these countries? Think about it.  What's the biggest risk for an Austrlian snowboarder in Whistler BC? Running out of condoms or beer? Hardly the same situation for that same Australian in Thailand when there is a bomb blowing up is there?
National governments, particularly the Scandanavian countries that see  families and the elderly traveling to Thailand had a duty to protect those people. These same families and old folks do not travel to Greece.

#3773936 Khmer Rouge Prison Chief Sentenced To 35 Years In Prison

I visited the school in Phnom Penh that became the infamous Tuol Sleng prison. I could not hold back tears. I went to the Killing Fields outside the city. I saw the site of the mass graves and the memorial filled with skulls. Again I cried. Man's inhumanity to man knowns no bounds. i am glad that the Cambodians are finally confronting their horrific past. I am only saddened that many of those responsible for the genocide are dying of natural causes before the wheels of justice have caught up with them.

This is just my opinion and it might offend people but I believe it to be true

The government has been far to nice to the red shirts. They have been  more concerned about looking good than they have in punishing the criminals. The red shirts should have been crushed. As is they were merely coddled told it was not there fault and given free rides home.

Time to think of Thailand and not what is nice for the red shirts. Give them the same consideration they gave Bangkok. If the situation was reversed they would not handle you in such a nice way.
The problem with the label 'red shirts' is that there are many legitimate pro-democracy supporters who happen to be UDD member, or have a red shirt. To separate those from the minority who are militant is the main problem the government faces. Keep in mind that the lower classes (no offense meant by this label) have very valid grieves which need to be addressed in a constructive manner. That means education, self-sufficiency, self-reliance, participation in a democratic process. And start to forget about hand-outs.

#3759397 American Killer Tells Phuket Police 'It Was A Terrible Accident'

Posted Dukeleto on 2010-07-19 19:31:51

Geez guys...any way you slice it , you have to be f%&king insane and or seriously mentally disturbed to hack a defenseless woman (or anyone for that matter) to death then be as irreverent as to break her ankles and wrists to get her into a suitcase so you could dump her. So, when he was shoving and breaking her up to get her into the suitcase and planning where to dump her he was still drunk and angry over his lost internet connection??? The guy is a fruitcake and I hope his fellow inmates show him the same lack of concern for a fellow human being as he has...despicable individual!

#3745724 Thai Colleges Get A Dressing Down Over Short Skirts

Posted hpwheelman on 2010-07-13 09:55:58

I am a student at one of these big international schools here. They have people literally stopping you from taking finals, midterms, or just going to class because of the skirts, how tight shirts are, if they are tucked in or not, the color and type of shoe you wear and other things that do not mater at all. Meanwhile students are openly plagiarizing, copying papers, and writing others papers (its a well known fact that as a native speaker I can make 50,000 baht writing someones thesis). If you ask me they need to focus more on how the students learn and teach them things like critical thinking or just proper reading. Or focus on the open cheating problems. Who gives a rats stinky but what color shoes I wear or if a woman wears pants instead of a skirt or a skirt that is a mini? Stop trying to control them and start teaching them.

#3740941 Paedophilic Internet Cafe Scam Investigated In Pattaya

Posted geriatrickid on 2010-07-10 20:45:53

The M.O. is an old one: Get someone into debt and then the person has to do something to pay off the debt or feed the addiction. After the first few forays into the coerced acts the subject compartmentalizes and becomes psychologically immune to the activities. However, the unpleasantness percolates and incubates. After a period of time, it erupts into manifestations of violence and other anti-social behaviors.Perhaps now, people who complain about the need to try and put a lid on prostitution and drugs, will appreciate why resources are expended on that activity. In plain English, hook someone on a debt or on drugs and they become yours to use and abuse. That is why the selling of illegal drugs to vulnerable people and prostitution are not "victimless" crimes. The people that take advantage of such vulnerable people are scum and no different than the slave owners of yore. Good on the authorities for acting. Better late than never.

ed. Annoying symbols and stuff that gets tossed into  the entries.
