usually I would agree and say there is something wrong with you but your experience with Thai people is more like the one I have than of the ones I read here.

"It would be simply unproductive to recite noble causes while inflicting damage to society."

This is either ridiculously simplistic or cynically disengenious.
Simplistic I'd say. It doesn't help to speak in absolute truths like 'We want democracy', or 'the government has only the wellbeing of the people in mind'.

I never have a problem at the Samui Immigration. I always get good service, never pay more than the normal extension fee of 1900 baht and when my mom was in ICU and I needed a re-entry permit asap to catch a flight to go home to see her the staff made sure I got in and out in less than ten minutes despite the full office.

With all due respect sbk.
Your circumstances are a bit different to the average punter.
You have been dealing with them for a long time so they figure that you know the procedures and fees.
You are an attractive woman  :whistling:  so that might help.
You have a Thai Husband so that might prevent them from trying it on.

Personally when dealing with Samui Immigration I always found them extremely friendly and helpful. In fact over and above what they should have been.
The only issue I had was the rate of their fees.

Awareness is the key, being ALERT all the time, it's not the jetskies, it's not the uncountable other road hazards, it's ONESELF!

Here as anywhere else, everyone has to take responsibility into his/he very own hands, it's easy to point at the "other ones", but it's oneself who is in charge, yes or no?

Sorry Gentlemen, not meant to offend, but to ring the bell of awareness!  B)

Yes, I'm aware one has to be aware Samuian, that is why I did not hit them last night but my post was meant for those who may not know this hazard exists and so RAISE your awareness when driving in the area. Driving on this island is  becoming one big video game ! :annoyed:

Mr Ricardo, I was posted to Thailand and worked there, most of the Farangs that are giving advice here, are the irredeemable type of the repudiate type, and their advice is as good as roll of a dice!
Stay away from them be a wise choice.

Educated Thai women are in plenty and large number of people do speak some English,  first time I was there, as I was walking, near Pantip Plaza, a lady started chatting with me and invited me for dinner, I thought she was the usual Thai hooker looking for a stray farang, it turned out she was the sectiona manager for the Hard Disk manufacturer Segate, which she gave me a tour of the factory later on, as well have had acquaintance with Bank Manager,  high school teacher, fashion designer, and ect, never , never prostitutes! I don't drik or smoke, so I never have been near any night spots, Thai people are friendly and happy go lucky, just be pleasant and gentle and you will get something nice full of spice. There are two campus full of sweet dainties, go the Cafeteria for lunch and you will meet loads of real neat ones,
Thammasat University  , is within walking distance of Kao San road where Back Packers hang out, the Internet is free there, if you have a laptop, take it there and enjoy the free high speed wireless........., In the city, off the Siam Square is the Chulalongkorn University, chuck a block with cuties and very cheap refectory and excellent food. The choice in unlimited! Thailand has changed a lot, and it always has been a open and tolerant society, the are super rich girls loaded with cash! Some of these Farang men that hang around the bars etc, in their own country their women folk wound not even urinate on them if they catch fire!

Dude your crazy man ! I was not recomending any of that ...LOL ...... Once again the VERY low class thinking gets in your way. And NO not all or even most middle classed girls are not allowed to date farang ! LOL Just more defeatist nonsense. He was asking about finding a girlfriend and your best advice is to send him to experienced hookers ! ROFL ...... Once again Richard, don't pay any attention to this kind of nonsense. My personal belief is that it comes from people who have such low self confidence that they settled for a bar girl type and now have a lot of explanations and excuses as to why it's impossible to find a girlfriend in Thailand that's not a hooker ! LOL  Or why hookers in Thailand are quazi hookers not really hookers so that makes it "different".
Once again just stay away from the sleaze ..... and Ian if you had read my post I did tell him to find a bar girl if all he wanted was a shag,  so your comments are not only without basis but clearly opposite to what I posted.

No, it is you that just doesn't understand the OP's topic. He is coming to Koh Samui which is a known tourist center where 80% of the women working or living  there are involved in the bar scene in some capacity or another. I'm sure sbk can back me up on that. I believe she lives down that way on a neighbouring island. He is NOT going to be working or living near a university where there are lots of young women from middle income (or better) families. If the OP is looking for a little romance with a nice Thai girl then he is unlikely to find it on Koh Samui without staying there for more than just the usual tourist visit.

Believe it or not, most nice Thai girls do not date farang tourists unless they've known them for several months. Yes, there is the occasional pretty girl working as  domestic help in one of the better hotels, but they are few and far between. Most don't speak English. And, believe it or not, there are a FEW that work in Pattaya hotels that are also nice, innocent girls. But again, they are hard to find and seldom date tourists. They don't want to get the bad name for doing so. Any young Thai woman who is dating a farang man in a city known for its sex trade will be automatically deemed a hooker... whether it's true or not. There was a whole topic on that subject.

I've got 3 friends with grown daughters going to university in Chiang Mai. I can assure you that none of them go out with farang tourists. Nor would they be allowed to without supervision.

It appears that many foreigners seriously underestimate the extent of corruption, graft and nepotism throughout Thai society, especially in political, legal. etc

Well, understandable, as things are, who would bite off the hand that feeds?

It's a society of unquestioned obedience to who or what ever is an inch above in the social ranking, often manipulated and then abused dependency, clan affiliation followed by a shoulder-to-shoulder stance; closing of ranks - unfettered by any scruples and widespread incompetence based on the aforementioned facts and very poor education covered by patriotic "we are XXXX people" and the magic formula that is above anything which is: "Sabai Jai" and "Sanook, Sanook" that is the very axis of the xxxx universe!

I'm not sure I understand your point.Although as a simple generalisation of thai society - you may have some points, i don't see how this relates to the underestimating of corruption by foreigners.

  It's all the rage now to promote your resort / hotel as " Green ".and in yesterdays newspaper we cannot mention, on page 3 of the Business section was an article on how this resort centre of Chaweng Noi is working for the environment. Yet down front on their beach they have a one metre pipe spilling raw sewerage on the beach to drain into the sea !

#3762769 Nobel Laureate Sen Faults Western Media Coverage Of Thai Unrest

Posted bajajvivek on 2010-07-21 11:46:34

he does makes sense when he says

"But there must be something more to the conflict when the poor happen to be led by the richest man in the country, he said."

If it wouldn't had been for Mr T's money, was it possible what all happened? Most media reports especially some very big names did report it as a struggle between rich and the poor. That's what everyone who was outside Thailand hear. That's what was fed to the international community. We living in Thailand did had more details but not the outsiders.

I believe that the professor is guilty of an oversimplification himself. The foreign media he cited, did not label the events as a class struggle. Yes, some reports highlighted that there were significant socio economic differences between the two opposing sides, but that's about it. They did discuss motives on both sides of the conflict.Perhaps the gentleman has allowed his own bias to colour his perception. He is an intelligent and remarkable individual, but his time at Cambridge is showing. His specialty is welfare economics, and I do not doubt his expertise in that area. However, his views as to the origins of conflict are outdated, much as the once worshipped Alan Greenspan's views on free market self regulation were proven outdated during the recent financial market crisis. This is not Dhaka, Bangladesh  circa 1955.It is unpleasant for many people including the professor to accept that the origins of conflict are the battle over scarces resources. India and Pakistan's real fight is about water resources. Thailand and Cambodia's conflict is motivated in part by land and watersheds,  but mostly over lucrative energy claims. Wars in Africa are fought over  access to mineral wealth, and on and on it goes. Neither side in the Thai conflict wants to admit to it, but one of the driving forces was the fight over  access to the trough of wealth that comes with political power. It is not politically correct to say that. Corruption drives almost all conflicts in Thailand, and mentioning corruption to someone like the professor just won't do.

What about the damage done to the country, the hundreds of thousands of tourists stranded here and not compensated for their losses. I would call seizing an airport a terrorist offence

"hundreds of thousands of tourists stranded here and not compensated  for their losses", you must be over reacting based on rumors.

Show me a single case where the PAD was sue for compensation or  losses. NONE. This is a fact.

Show me a single case in EUROPE where after a general Strike the workers or after a demonstration which shut down maybe a runway, or an airport, or a whole city center, those involved had to compensate those who suffered losses?

And where, since when is such an act labeled "terrorism"?

This thead is sinking into farce - no airport has ever been shut down in Europe - if they tried it they would be dealt with severely. Let's get back to some serious comment - 80 PAD leaders have been summonsed - let's hope they are prosecuted - moving on...
