In Topic: Bangkok-Chiang Mai High Speed Rail Ready By 2018: Transport Ministry

I just hope they sort out the rail crossings and make safety the no.1 consideration.

It can take a train a full mile or more to brake – even after it has hit something.

About 15,000 people die every year trying to cross the tracks of India's rail network.

Anybody know the stats for Thailand. I know that last week, here in Hua Hin,  a Thai crossed the local track on his motor bike, tried to beat the on coming train, misjudged its speed and was killed instantly.

On a slightly different thread  ...........again, I am astounded that the press /authorities allow the release of the picture of the deceased. It's publication shows no compassion / consideration for the relatives / offspring of the deceased. The article should be restricted on publishing facts not speculation, nor should the police openly comment on 'love triangles'. Time, day, date, who, what, where, when and how? Not hearsay! The release of this article massively contaminates any fair trial. It is for a judge (coroner) to decide and comment on motives etc. The press / authorities should stick to the facts, not speculate as to who the deceased thought was more handsome.

In Topic: Over 1 Million Thais Are Infected With Hiv/Aids

2012-03-19 11:28:14

HIV is a lentivirus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome ...... AIDS.
AIDS is a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.
Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breat milk.
Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells.  The four major routes of transmission are
Unsafe sex
Contaminated needles,
Breast milk,
and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth

Complacency and a lack of education about HIV has to play a key role in educating the Thai people about the risk of HIV.

Without antiretroviral therapy, someone who has AIDS typically dies within a year and the therapy costs money!

In Topic: Jellyfish – Question

2011-08-08 13:53:15

My advice is simple, bathe where the locals bathe.

Last August, I was bit my a small jellyfish on one leg while bathing on the small beach near
Coco 51.

I seemed to know straight away what it was. You will also know straight away. It feels like a stinging bite / an electric shock. My immediate reaction was to jump. I was only in shallow water. Because of my actions the jellyfish must have thought I was attacking it. I was just anxious to get out of the water as soon as possible. It bit me a second time on the back of my other leg. I had heard about urinating on the sting but I was in too much shock to do it myself. I got my wife and another lady to piss on me. Yes it certainly helps. By the time I got to the pharmacy both my legs had slightly swollen and there were hundreds of tiny pimples all over my legs. The pain killers and cream they gave me releaved the pain but i was out of action for 24 hours and had a restless night. It felt like a giant burn , like when you rub your leg against a hot motor cycle exhaust, but worse. Anyway, no ill effects!but the whole incident has made me a lot more cautious about swimming in the sea.

Because of the alkalinity of vinegar it will help but it will make you stink.

Jellyfish are more prominant during the rainy season. Bang Sampan does have a problem will jelly fish.
