In Topic: Shady Advertising By Restaurant

I don't blame anybody for being annoyed about false advertising. But let's please have reactions appropriate to each case.

Here's my example: Extended part of my Thai family bought a new house and were shopping for air conditioners.  They had already decided to buy 'Inverter; techcnology only.

They found what appeared to be a quite good price at an XX shop (showroom of the actual manufacturing company) in a major upmarket shopping complex. All the models on display had lots of advertising stickers etc, including stickers with the word 'Inverter'.

The sales documentation was completed, but not signed, but suddenly the husband asked the question 'These models on special price are 'Inverter'?

The sales supervisor gave a sharp answer 'no'! Husband pointed at the stickers which said 'Inverter'.

Sales supervisor basically said (all in Thai of course)  'so what'.

Sale cancelled.  Shop staff very angry, husband explains that he believed he was buying 'Inverter' because they all have 'Inverter' stickers and that's it's false advertsing.

Staff simply cannot understand his point. No sale.

The best way for Thailand to continue to ruinits reputation in the global community as a bungling, inept, backwards, and xenophobic country would be to abolish the Thailand Elite car, which has already sold >2,500 lifetime of benefits at 1,000,000Thai Baht each to the wealthiest and most influential investors in Thailand.  Are these really the 2500 people Thailand wants to royal piss off?  They don't want their money back -- they want the privileged and benefits they paid for.   Its no worth any law suits or more bad PR -- rather at least  just honor these memberships already sold. Otherwise they risk the most severe and significant downgrade in the highest end segment of foreign Thai investors, which could cripple the Thai economy.

The smart move would be to keep Thai Elite going, even if the program itself has a loss.   The overall benefit in terms of infux of huge foreign capital investment alone is worth it.

Total nonsense.

In the first place a very large number of the Cards were given away free to sports stars, personalities etc..

Secondly I frankly do not believe that most of the "Elite" who paid for this Card are intelligent Investors - in the Thai Economy or elsewhere.

Any competent Investor would look at the supposed benefits of the Card and immediately realise that it was totally unsustainable and simply could not last - "Free" Health checks, "Free" Golf Course Fees, "Free" Limousine transport and supplementary Airtickets etc. etc., that's the clear red flag! Nothing is "Free"; the costs of all these benefits must be paid by the TPC Company to the provider of the service. Some lucky Cardholders boasted on this and other Forums that they had quickly earned back their "Investment" by using these "Free" Services, good for them, perhaps they saw the flaws in the scheme, but now those not so fortunate whine that the Card is in trouble and benefits are being reduced or limited and cannot understand why.

TPC has no Income apart from the Fees paid by new Members, it's basically a Ponzi scheme which must inevitably collapse once money received from new Members dries up.

I sympathise with the Cardholders who paid but have absolutely no respect for them as Businessmen!

Patrick

Interesting word 'businessmen':

- Schemes like this are way too complex for gov't beaurocrats to manage, and they don't have the knowledge or experience to do so.

- One of the biggest problems is the costing and the cost volativity of the 'services' offered, plus no  guarantee that the service providors will even continue, many have stiff competition, plus other providors regularly changing the services to appear to be more attractive and to try to keep and/or enhance their market share.

- Califormia WOW comes to mind - many farang who post on this board have, over the years, believed that a 'lifetime membership' was a great bargain, when in reality they should have been realising that this business model was unsustainable.

Credit card number theft is rampant in Thailand (and other countries too of course), and It's a regulation of the Bank of Thailand that:

1. Merchants are forbidden to print all of the 16 actual digits on either the customer or merchant slips.  XXXX XXXX XXXX 1234 or similar is allowed.

2. Merchants are forbidden to record all the 16 actual digits in any other form of record keeping.

But there are many merchants who ignore the above and their printers still printing all of the 16 actual digits.

Of just maybe that's entirely preventable through the hardware issued by the credit card company ant its partners?  Seems a software issue to me, and one that they can correct if they wanted to.

And in addition, in over half a decade they haven't figured out a security model that requires a little more than the card and 'a signature' ..  They security mess (and indeed it is one) is entirely of their own making.

Yes it's asoftware issue within the card machine at the merchants store.  I know this because I was talkin to a friend of my son who had just expanded his shoe shop into a bigger enterprise at a major shopping centre. He also applied to his banks and got approval to have CC card facilities.

He mentioned that a bank employee came to do the initial installation / set-up of the card swip machine and the bank guy explained in details what he was setting up and mentioned that he (his bank) was obliged by law to do some set up work, on the card swipe machine, so that the printer printed XXXX XXXX XXXX 1234 etc., and not all the actual numbers.

I renewed my Alien's Book today and was in and out of the police station in 10 minutes. No documents required other than the Alien's Book and no copies requested. They didn't seem to care that my passport had changed. I just signed the form, and paid 800 baht for 5 years.

Well, its an curious piece of bureaucracy from a bygone age that nobody seems to care much about it these days.  It used to be an essential document for the police to use in controlling the large Chinese immigrant population who could be stopped and asked to show it at any moment.  Try and use it in a bank or such like to prove your identity today, explaining that it is your Thai government issued personal identification document, and they just look at it with a puzzled expression and say, "Passport please".

Agree, the bottom line is that most government employees, including the police don't even know what the Resdence Certificate (actually a small book) is.

On numerous occasions when pulled over by the police I have shown my 'book', watched the policemans face and it's clear they don't know what it is, and on most occasions they have gone into small panic mode: saluted, clapped their shoes and very politely informed me to proceed with lots of whistle blowing and hand signals to get me back into the traffic flow.

Another example - 2 years back my car registration was up for renewal and I decided to transfer the ownership (the blue book) to my adult Thai son's name.

Son took all the expected documents to the land transport office at chatujuck and had the misfortunate to meet the dragon from hell. She insisted that:

1. My son's Thai ID card was false because it's illegal for Thai people to have a farang surname, he also produced his passport, again she said it was fake, and
2. My Resident Certificate book was a fake because there is no such thing in Thailand.

After several return visits my son was informed that the dragon from hell was off sick, and a couple of other staff very quickly processed the registration transfer with some serious apologies to my son.

Or let's put it another way.

G'kid you very often demand that other posters produce proof.

Nows your chance to put up ot shut up - please provide clear evidence that the abhisit government was a puppet of the military.

But I guess, as usual you will ignore a post which doesn't fit your view of the world.
, but
It is not necessary to state - certainly they were beholden to the military leadership. Its clear that the military nudged Newin in a certain direction, to anyone with brain.  But after suffering through the truly awful governments of Samak and Somchai - Abhisits was a definite improvement.

So please share some details / reasoning why you say:

1. "certainly they were beholden to the military leadership".
2. " Its clear that the military nudged Newin".
