According to the AirAsia website, an announcement regarding the Chiang Mai-Macau route will be made on 22 March.

Chiang Mai immigrations only allow certain airlines as acceptable transit connections in Bangkok (i.e. allowing you to clear CIQ in Chiang Mai). You can see the list of approved airlines at the THAI check-in counter at Chiang Mai airport. I'm pretty sure that the airlines themselves need to make and pay for this arrangement. AirAsia is guaranteed to not be on the list...

Just did some checking myself. Was able to secure a round-trip CNX-KMG price of 720 yuan, outbound from CNX on 29 June, return on 06 July. Went thru all the gyrations of entering passenger data, etc, and was then quoted a final price of 1908 yuan (720 yuan fare + 1188 yuan taxes/fees). No thanks!
