Only tangentially related to the topic.....but I saw this today and if you can set aside the hyperbolic nature of the headline, it's an interesting style of presentation:

In Topic: Carrefour? Where Did It Go?

Interesting! I hadn't followed the news that resulted in Big C taking over Carrefour's locations. What I have followed is my own anecdotal experience at the "new" Big C (across the street from Central World in Bangkok) that was rebuilt after the "situation" that occurred in that area a few years ago. To be clear, I give them a lot of respect for the investment.....and reinvestment they made in that location.

The new interior design, which is probably similar to whatever they've rolled out in Carrefour's locations, is what I take issue with. The "old" Big C used to be about value.....the "new" Big C (at least the produce section where I was looking) seems to be more about being "pretty" and "pricey".

At least for today.....Foodland's produce prices crush Big C's.

Just my personal observation after one visit, so I may have just caught them on a "pricey day".

Hey bobl.....you're quite right, I screwed up more than I got right. :-(    Thank you for reading between the lines. She's only on the most basic tourist visa (I'm pretty sure she cannot meet the retirement requirements at this time).

I looked at the "pinned" topic under this forum....and went to the government site that listed the types of visas (the site with orange/brown background, black type)...but I couldn't tell from the information whether she has to leave every 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days? I also did a Google Search and found three sites that specialize in visa runs / border runs....but none said how often someone must complete such a "run".

I'm not one of the most prolific members here on ThaiVisa, but I've also never done anyone wrong, never said a bad thing here, never trolled a post. Any chance just this once I can be forgiven for not doing more than I've already done to find the answers I need on my own? If so, what does someone who showed up as a tourist need to do, and how often do they need to do it in order to stay for the foreseeable future in ChiangMai? And in the context of whatever the answers are, with no regard to expenses, what's the fastest way to do what she needs to do (bus from ChiangMai and back....or flight from ChiangMai and back?)?

I've been up for more than 24-hours working on an unrelated project, and my mind is frazzled. Help me out this one time....or at least make your "screw off" reply funny enough that I can smile before I pass out at the keyboard.  :-)

In Topic: Eateries In Shopping Malls

To the extent that Pseudolus' observation is statistically accurate (I'm not doubting it!).....perhaps it's less "food demand" driven and more "restaurant lease space demand" driven. If the shopping mall's developer has a marketing approach that, for whatever reason (marketing related, sociological, economy related, currency exchange rate, etc.) is bringing in restaurant space demand from Japan.....that'd be a part of the reason. In that scenario, the landlord likely has tied down the restaurant operator with personal guarantees, deposits, etc....so that even if "all those Japanese restaurants can't survive and a bunch of 'em go out of business"......well, the landlord doesn't necessarily feel as much pain, and in the meantime the developer can promote his high "occupancy rate" whenever he seeks additional bank financing.

Then again.....it could just be a poorly thought out bet by shopping mall developers that soba noodles are the next "french fries".  :-)
