#3910419 Help If I Come To Thailand

Posted IanForbes on 2010-09-27 01:05:28

Bina gives VERY good advice, Claire. And, the woman's forum IS a good place to hang out on thaivisa for less "hostile" replies. On the general forum it is more like a shooting gallery where you have to be prepared for potshots. The female moderators on thaivisa don't let that happen on the woman's forum. And, I'll still say that a smaller, tourist type city like Chiang Mai would probably suit you better than Bangkok. I say tourist type city because that is where you will find enough English speaking people. Many  cities in Thailand have very few English speaking people and unless you know Thai you will quickly become lonely.

Bangkok is a dynamic city with much to see and do, but getting around can be a pain, and you wind up staying in one small part of it. I would come for a few months and stay for a week or so at each of the main tourist areas. That will give you a pretty good idea of what suits you best. When you finally get to Thailand then that is the time to start asking more questions. Most people are willing to help an honest  enquiry..

clare, i dont know how to say this politely, but u are 18 and female and u dont seem to have a clue about thailand let alone bangkok so unless u are super citywise, or just very naive, u are leaving yourself open to a lot of problems... i suggest u stroll around the forum for a while before posting and go over to our ladies forum since there are some pretty saavy ladies living in bangkok that can u give u a better 'low down' on life there.

second, do some real research.  showing up as a foreign woman and young is just asking for problems unless u are the 'trekker' type, but actually settling down and living is a 'nother ball game... im married to a thai man and speak thai and i wouldnt just show up to live in the middle of a bustling and somewhat third world city without doing some basic research.  there are programs especially geared towards teaching and living in thailand legalling (with visas) that could maybe give u a better picture (realistic) of life in thailand.  unless u have unlimited finances that is, or someone to bail u out in times of trouble. and times of trouble do happen .

scout around, read the board, take much wiht a grain of salt, and research research research....

It leaves me with the feeling something is amiss with all Thais in regard to violence, clearly an education/culture issue.

Sorry mate, its just your GF and the other woman, how can you say ALL Thais are like this ?

Posted bifftastic on 2010-09-26 02:48:01

My g/f likes to play-fight, and will declare herself 'man kieow' which results in her poking or pinching me, basically spoiling for a fight. Not a real fight, just messing about. It's a shame that she's extremely vulnerable to tickling because after about 5 minutes she can't speak or even laugh properly any more due to convulsions brought on by even the slightest move, on my part, that even looks like it might be another tickling attack :)

She doesn't do it in public, although generally messing about isn't un-heard of.

If your g/f is hitting you and you don't like it, or you get embarrassed by it then that's a different thing.
Has she ever really laid into you? Given you a proper slap?

You should know if it's a 'play slap' or not. What does she do when you hit her back? Is everything else ok ?

She says she likes hitting you, have you told her you don't like it? Do you  like it? I mean we don't need to know the details of whether or not you two are into spanking or whatever floats your boats but if you don't like it, then don't put up with it.

Is it a 'Thai thing'? Who knows? In my last relationship in the UK there were so many holes in the wall where my g/f had thrown stuff at me, and a few in me when she didn't miss! She wasn't Thai, she was completely mental without any SE Asian influences whatsoever!

Oh and the other possibility, maybe your just 'hittable' :) Have you got one of those faces that people just like to punch?

Pattaya is a garden city paradise PERIOD. Come and enjoy, our lovely beaches and friendly natives await your visit!

Thanks but definately no thanks.  Been there once and experinced the friendly nature.  It is far from paradise.  It is an extremely dangerous place and you will not get me or my family within 500 kms of the sewer  We learnt the perils 1st hand.

You have been to Pattaya one time and yet you feel qualified to make judgments. You have seen a little bit of this city and you feel you have the right to call it a sewer. As you are so intimidated by the place, why do you feel compelled to watch these postings and post yourself here? I am sure you could find better things to do. Better for you and for the rest of us. You say you are not getting within 500km of Pattaya, can we rely on you staying out of Thailand then?

Both Britons are set to be extradited and Thai police said they were in discussions with the Japanese embassy over the Ogushi case.

It would be good if justice in Thailand could be halfway trusted.  Guilty or not, I wouldn't trust the Thai courts with a traffic ticket, let alone cases such as these.

The Thai police are arresting Brits at the request of the British Embassy and they are to be extradited to UK. What is the point of the Thai bashing comment about Thai courts?

Maybe if farang police and farang immigrations back in farangland were doing their jobs these miscreants wouldn't be free and allowed to leave their countries to travel to Thailand where the Thai police end up cleaning up for the inept farang authorities.

Agreed. The Thai court system has nothing to do with it since they were both convicted in British courts. It amazes me how some people will take any opportunity to insult Thailand even when, if they thought about it for a second, their comment is completely irrelevant to the subject under discussion.

The reason being that Mr. Fletcher has been arrested and is to be deported by Thai authorities for a crime allegedly committed in Cambodia at the request of the British authorities.

He has committed no crime on Thai soil nor has he any outstanding warrants for his arrest. Committing a crime in the UK and being convicted does not prohibit travel to Thailand either.

Indeed, it is not Thai law to have to announce to Immigration previous convictions, despite the comments stating so previously.

Yet again we can clearly see Thai courts merely doing as they please when it suits them, in spite of the law. I'm sure they don't want characters of Mr. Fletcher's ilk in their country but the fact is Thailand attracts many of these kinds of people and if they are against them visiting they should make it a law and subsequently enforce it.

While I am 100% in favor of ridding Thailand of trash, they should start by cleaning their on yard first. There are plenty more local criminals and crooked police than there are falang.

Oh, silly me, the locals don't have the money to bribe their way out and the police would lose face if they were themselves arrested.

This place is and always will be a joke when it comes to legal issues.

I do not understand why people continually harp on about ''local criminals'' needing to be cleaned up before worrying about farang undesirables.  Thai criminals are born and bred Thais,  and criminals or not they have every right to be in Thailand,  their home country.

Farangs, on the other hand do not have this right and if they are criminals or undesirables they should be the first targeted and booted out. When all farang crooks are gone and only decent law abiding farangs are left , then clean up their own countrymen.

I am Australian and hate the fact that  farang scum  of any country, including my own, are living in Thailand.

Just once could we have an article that went something like this? "Wealthy Chinese Thai businessman convicted of selling and murdering over 5000, 8 to 13 old children over the last twenty years was set free after paying off the judge 4 million baht and killing the parents of some of the victims that complained" Just once but only for fun???

I took my wife back to the UK and no-one thought she was a bar girl.  At all times,  I made her dress in an expensive ladies suit, Gucci shoes, and had her hair tied back, whilst sporting sexy secretarial style glasses.

I left her in a bar in London when I had to go out and do some business. When I came back 2 hrs later, i was told that she had won 24 games of pool on the trot, knocked back 15 free sambucas, and bottled the landlady for not letting her shoot any more ping pong balls from her hogs eye.
After 3 hrs in the UK, Our cover was blown.

As has been stated above since it is a matter of plain observation that most Farangs married to Thai women started their relationship with a financial transaction, then people will make that assumption on the basis of probability.

A farang married to a Thai has two options on this:

Dismiss the opinions of others
Don't introduce your Thai wife here on ThaiVisa

The latter is advisable anyway, but particularly so if you can't bring yourself to manage the former.

As for what Thais thnk - Keep in mind that they on the one hand can see traits of behaviour in other Thais that we Farangs are blind to - They read other Thais like an open book. So they might be making an observation that the Farang who's been with his partner for years has never been able to make.

They might also be a tad green with envy - Especially if a number of trinkets and designer handbags etc have been affixed to disguise the what they can plainly see.

I'm surprised you even had to ask this question. It's pretty obvious that most people around the world will assume you're married to a bargirl unless you can prove the contrarary. They certainly will think that money was the main reason the girl married you.

Age difference will have a lot to do with it too.

Age difference will have MOST to do with it.  A young couple (farang man and Thai wife) of similar ages will seldom cause anyone to think they are any different that any other couple. But, an older  farang man (over 40) with a young Thai woman in her twenties WILL attract some attention. And especially so because most Thai women look much younger than they are. Add to that the self righteous, bigoted majority in North America and Europe and you have your answer.

Certainly not all bar girls are sleazy.   Certainly a large number of normal Thai women at some point in their life supplement their wages by the pay for play business.

One would have to be very naive if one did not come up with a statistic that at least 50% of marriageable Thai women have at some time or another in one way or another been involved in some way with the P4P business.

There have been various reports on major universities in Thailand that put the percent around the figure I have mentioned.  If you look hard you can find them.

So it is certainly not a habit confined to women who work in bars.

People who look down on wives or women in general because of their past associations or employment or proclivities are in my mind really missing the point.

Sex is not the same in Thailand as in the west.  They are bringing their own values to another culture and judging that culture by Western standards.

Do a large percent of Thai women who have Falang husbands also have Thai husbands?  Of course they do and any Thai can attest to this.  But it is not the same as having two husbands in London or NY.  This is Thailand.

Traffic noise, especially emergency sirens, motorbikes and lorries is increasingly affecting my sleep and even pervades my (foam aviation) earplugs.

Quote

You could be in for a hard time in LOS if you are that sensitive to noise when you are sleeping as there nearly always seems to be some sort of noise going down (24/7) everywhere except for out in the boondocks.

That's the price for staying next to the main road, and probably a so-called desirable location of being just next to the mass transit. Next you will be needing air purifiers...

You can hear a pin falls in my condo units after 9pm. One is 200m inside Sukhumvit Soi 24, with casement windows, and the other two units with normal sliding doors to a balcony located 600 m inside a soi near BTS Prakhanong.

Thus, not all condo units in LOS suffer noise pollution 24/7.

It perhaps would be a little cheaper to approach your land lord, explain the problem and request that you break the lease and lose your two months security deposit (assuming the lease is not too expensive).

You could be in for a hard time in LOS if you are that sensitive to noise when you are sleeping as there nearly always seems to be some sort of noise going down (24/7) everywhere except for out in the boondocks.

Posted Familyonthemove on 2010-09-16 18:54:49

Film over windows is used for heat insulation and will do little for noise.  Secondary windows fitted inside the current windows is a good option and sealed double galzing is the best.  But you need a decent air-gap (distance between the two sheets of glass) to be effective for sound proofing.

Sound absorbers in your room can also help (soft furnishing, curtains etc).  Plant will do little good anyway.

Sound proofing really needs mass (two layers of heavy glass, solid concrete walls).

Hope this helps?
