Quite how the ordinary person with no power is as responsible as the power players after having their cake and eating it is as responsible for the mess is open to question.

The players are obviously manouvering around trying to find a large common ground so things can get back to normal with mosty of the old players back in the game. That is what "we are all responsible" means.

I'm totally with you there. I hate these "it's all our fault" opinion pieces that seem to pop up all the time. We all know the blame lies with the power players. Doing nothing ie. staying at home and not protesting is in fact the law. By speaking out people put themselves at risk and ordinary people, everywhere are loath to do that.

Agreed, simple cowardice.  Instead of accepting responsibility for their actions, it is easier to simply say: "well it's everyone's fault"  Then no one has to accept blame and the elite get off scott-free.
That notion of compromise instead of justice in Thailand will be this country's downfall.

Big-whoop...now they can find them work de-feathering birds at a chicken processing plant or or gutting fish at a tuna cannery for starvation wages.

Or they could be sent to a trade school or back to finish their education, which was probably cut short, and give them s lift up in life. Not knowing the Australian group well enough to speak with authority about their program, it is probably more thought out than your comment, even if it were in jest.

Yeah...that economy along the Thai-Cambodian border is just booming isn't it!

Every time I do a visa run I see new 5-star resorts and industrial estates just begging for more workers...I guess all those people wandering about dressed in tattered rags, with bony hands extended at me when I pass by, are only in my imagination.

If these charities really want to help improve the lot of poor people, let them promote free-market economic policies that will increase investment and therefore economic output in them. This will in turn increase demand for labour and hence increase wages and slowly lift people out of poverty. Saving a few girls from the sex-industry, while good for raising money in the West to fund the salaries of the NGO employees, does little to solve the underlying issues that give rise to the problem in the first place.

Well they are doing their little bit, I never read or heard anywhere that the grey man was trying to solve all world issues.

You seem so critical of their efforts, I imagine it must be because you have done so much more OR is that just more of that stuff coming out of your avatars rear end?

It must be so hard for you sitting up on your high horse, looking down on everyone and everything they do

Giving your money away isn't necessary a spiritual activity. The majority of people who donate usually want some recognition for their largeness thus negating any spiritual reason for this.

Really how childish is this.. Ere Mister ?? Can we have our ball back please ??

And for the abbot to get the police involved !!! The flying club was there before the Temple, just the abbot having a hissy at not immediately being kowtowed to.

Seriously what happened to a little tolerance.
Exactly. It's an inanimate object and the Buddhist tenet: "The cessation of suffering: freedom from attachment and aversion" needs noting by the abbot.

All this flashiness and desire to create a magnificent structure is not what the Buddha was about.

..Thai culture, history and values have been created by successive govts and rammed down the throats of the populous, smothering most free thinking.

That's exactly my point. In my opinion that has to change before there will be any true heirs to the future wealth of Thailand.
The potential for wealth amongst new groups in society is relative to their creative capacity, I would say..

Just think of the fact that basically everything we surround us with today in the modern society was invented and developed by stubborn individuals,
many times seen as lunatics, fools and odd outsiders before it came to public use.
For example; the light tube, air condition, batteries, telephone, aircraft, cars, radio, penicillin and much much more..

Until the day that Thailand will foster and accept strong, free thinking individuals - regardless of their family origins - there will be no real wealth generation
in Thailand. And, yes, I define "wealth" as true original value that increases the living standards for people - thus sellable in any situation - rather than short-term stock exchange gains or money made on serving rich CEO's at golf courses, as that - in my opinion - is highly volatile and doomed to be depending on those CEO's making their golf course money somewhere else first - thus eternally putting Thailand in dependancy of other's wealth.

Now, how many internatioally recognised companies producing anything does Thailand have ? Except for maybe Singha beer ??
Compare that to for example Germany with a similar population count..

And, of course,..
until the day that Thailand will foster and accept strong, free thinking individuals - regardless of their family origins - there will be no change in Thailand's political or economical structure either.

Posted Image Anyway, I'm an optimist. My son is only seven years old now, but wait and see.. Posted Image
