I second Exeter. I view this topic regularly and find it very informative. The juvenile "I'm right - No, I'm right" schoolboy point-scoring that has been dragging on for the last few pages diminishes the otherwise valid points made and belongs to the threads below in the general melee.

Keep it civilised chaps, please, or the mods might close down a useful link. This is a community, for the benefit of all, not a soap-box for a minority.

#5230248 Thai Cabinet Approves Ban On Imports Of Used Vehicles

ban imported cars to prevent street racing? I think that's a bit of a stretch. I thought the police are supposed to prevent reckless driving.

Well, the post actually mentioned large engined motorcycles being used for street racing but I get your point. Instead of banning the import of cheap second hand vehicles, maybe they should ban the manufacturers new car adverts such as the one I've just watched on prime time tv. The 3 Toyota Vios in the advert are clearly being raced, in fact the male driver indicates to the female driver that they should race. Maybe this is why the majority of Thai drivers need to be the one in front ?

She probably hoped for ur clone to step foward. U should take that as a compliment. When some girls that were hitting on me found out that I was already taken, they asked if I had a brother or a friend that was single. Some interpret that if u are good guy then ur immediate friends and relatives must be the same. Hoping to get someone as close to u as they can.

Yes, the pain is real.

I know many Vietnamese families who have no hope or expectation that they will ever find out what happened to their fathers, brothers, mothers and sisters.

I do also feel bad for the suffering of the Vietnamese.  But do you really know Vietnamese families, or are you making a political statement?   To politicize a tragic, senseless war is despicable.  Those who died on both sides were patriots.

I say this because I did know Sgt. Avery's family, although I never knew Allen.  I am from his hometown.  The return of his remains adds a bit of closure to America's veterans, and a lot of closure and pride to his family.

#5118463 International community to resume nuclear talks with Iran

Posted Credo on 2012-03-08 18:33:34

Talking probably isn't worth much, but it's what has to be done before any type of military action.

I doubt they are getting rid of any incriminating evidence....I think they are moving it to more secure locations.

And yes, everyone will speak badly about Israel, but, hey that's pretty much what happens no matter what Israel does.

If I were an Israeli, I would be more than happy to be alive to counter the bad-mouthing. In the end, a lot of people will be happy if they disable the Iranian nuclear aspirations.

#4981227 Nice Thai Policemen - Your Stories

Posted MrJohnson on 2012-01-15 17:23:20

I have read numerous threads/posts on this site over quite a long period that were most disparaging to the BIB.It is clear that police here are involved in all sorts of scams, take downs, protections and extortion. The problem for me is that I have never been subject to any of these kinds of activities. I read some of these posts and they read like some kind of conspiracy theory as if the Thai police target foreigners specifically. I drive a car, ride a motorbike, occasionally go out late at night, drive past the Asoke intersection (supposedly where many shake-downs occur) and have never been stopped, harassed or otherwise. I have, on two occasions, been stopped riding my scooter for traffic infringements, both of which I was guilty of. I paid an 'on the spot fine', by choice mind you and left after an amicable and friendly exchange. I got to know the traffic cops near my kids school. They have always been friendly and polite. I bumped into one in the street far from the school one day. He said "hello" but I did not recognize him because he was off-duty and strolling along with his family. He introduced his wife and daughter to me and then we went our separate ways. BTW - I am not a hi-so, do not have special phone numbers, police escorts etc. Just an ordinary Joe who is polite and civil. I find that, generally speaking, that is what I get in return from police and other Thais in general. I'm sure I will think of some other specific instances which I will post at a later date, if for no other reason than to ensure that a positive thread continues to have legs.

#3928443 Hotels In Bangkok Refuse Blacks And Indians

Posted swallowtail1 on 2010-10-04 19:45:36

Who in the right mind would want to share a hotel with Africans?

Now i make sure when i check in that no Africans are staying, if the hotel does have a African staying I will just WALK OUT, it's just not worth the HIV risk staying in the same hotel.

Thank God the Thais can stand up to the savages.

THAILAND DOES NOT WANT COCAINE DEALING SCAM AIDS RIDDEN SCUM LIVING HERE

This is my personal choice and I know plenty of higher class farang such as myself who hold the same views.

Although I  only stay in  5* hotels I might have to check this Nava hotel out.

And I am suprised a African teacher is on this fred, can i ask do you have to take a AIDS test before you work with thai children?

One would like to think of the HIV risk

#3921973 Treat Poor Thais Like Children

Posted elkangorito on 2010-10-01 21:33:53

From the original post of the mental giant called Chunky;

Quote

Essentially in Thai society rich Thais treat poor Thais in a very  non-personal manner, therefore, if you treat a poor Thai person (your  maid/driver/the noodle lady/employee) nicely they will take your  kindness as weakness.

How strange!! Where I live & where I work, the exact opposite occurs...pay respect & you get it back, from all "classes" of people (I don't see "classes"...I just see "people").

Maybe I live in a part of Thailand that ignores Chunky's obscure assumptions?

why do so many of u complain when Thailand tries to get its act togeather?

What would happen in a western country if u overstayed or even India or Nepal.  Jail time-deportation and Blacklisted.

Could it be that oyu all donet wnat thailand to grow up and always remain the country where you can always buy your way out of things.  For this country to join the 2nd world they must start enforcing laws, not letting them slide.

but people are still able to buy themselves out.  it's just going to cost more.  have you not been here long enough yet to see how it works?  it's nothing more than a power move by the new head and an excuse to squeeze a bit more out of us.  you'll feel the pinch too sooner or later.  likely sooner.

If immigration officials use it as a way to squeeze some pocket money out of over stayers it will be known soon enough and I don't think Thailand will want that kind of publicity. Report corruption to your embassy. When detained you have the right to inform your embassy.

#3897800 Biker Paralysed In Crash Now Stranded In Thai

Posted Mhayden on 2010-09-21 19:27:48

If any of the relatives of the paralyzed guy is reading this, I ask you:  Why on earth did you not advise your loved one the importance of traveling with Travel Insurance?  Whenever I travel, I always have my family asking if I got travel insurance (and of course I did, on every occasion). -  There is no way I would like to be a drain on my loved ones financial resources (like this twat).  Really, when you look at all of this - it's all just common sense, and I've got no sympathy for anyone that is dumb, and makes stupid choices.

Keep this people separated from the public forever.
And feed them forever by my tax money (the money I've working hard for)? And pay/support the guards, fences, courts, jails etc??
No, thanks! I better feed one more homeless dog - they do NOT deserve ignorance, as those CREATURES do.
You need not feed them well.

Cheap, subsistence fair will cost little, make them wish every day for more,
but keep living to regret their acts, for as long as it takes to expire naturally.
Small room, limited movement, no sunlight leading to depression, crap food,
no reading, door welded shut, live in your pathetic/apathetic thoughts.
Tough luck, you made your bed, go end your days in it.
Bye bye.
I'm sorry, but I'd never wish that on the worst criminals or murderers.  Seriously - Everyone deserves a second chance, no matter what they do.  I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished - by all means, jail them for a year or two - however while they are in prison, try and re-educate them.  Teach them about respect and introduce them to God.  After a couple of years, I'm of the firm belief that everyone should be given a second chance, to prove to everyone (as well as themselves) that indeed they have changed, and can make it and be a respectful person like the rest of us.  Jesus loves you and loves us all.

Learn to listen to criticism. They say this because they love our country and not that they hate it. They care for it as much as we do. That's why they show concern. We listen and try to correct our mistakes. Telling them to go home isn't the way to argue or defend your point. We Thais should start questioning our rediculous laws rather than nod our heads and say "This is the Thai way".  Too much brainwashing in our educational system makes us look like robots. Much more, they probably pay income tax as compared to 80% of our workforce who are exemp from paying taxes because they earn less than 20K a month.

We should look to the outside world and see what we are doing wrong. That's the only way we can truly move forward.
