In Topic: Hang Dong Expats Meet Up?

This sounds like a good idea. I know there's talk of an eventual TV member 'party' in the works - weren't they affectionately called 'pissups' not too long ago ? But it could be fun for a few of us to meet and check out the Big C courtyard or any of the ring roads' bars. I rarely make time to sit n enjoy time out of my usual haunts in town, but remember fondly the times I used to back a few years ago. Many of them have better-than-reasonable beer and food specials. IN fact, the food can be pretty serious at some of the unassuming roadside bars.

Btw, I'm super excited by Farlongs like Winnie being happy to use songtells !

It's nice to see a real community use of the forum here, Larry. I know only a few of us here may have met your father, but what an interesting story of his life you've shared. I last saw him when 2 of your daughters were visiting a few months back, and I could see his happiness to be in a loving house with his family from all around the world there. You 'did good' taking care of him (and still) your mom by having them here and looking after their needs. You aren't alone in that. I think there might very well be a few dozen families where kids have imported their elderly parents to CM to look after them and provide for them a decent standard of living with affordable medical care as well. I could even see a group for expats who do this coming together some day for occasional meetings to strategize, commiserate, and celebrate all that caring for aging parents entails.

Your Dad was a good guy. And you did well by him. The resemblance of you and your kids to both your parents shows that he lives on. Sixty-three years of marriage, that's outstanding. May he rest in peace. And strength to you and your family.

The boldness that the anonymity of being concealed (partially) within a vehicle imparts to a Thai is only comparable to that which a Farang feels empowered with when esconced behind an internet forum moniker.

I grant validity to every complaint listed so far. Will say it has been refreshing to see absolutely idiotic, mindless, and rude driving while visiting the States this time around. Have even seen certain maneuvers I could have sworn was only a type of Thai idiocy. Now must give credit to my own native people too. Clearly, no one culture has the lock on it.

Check out these last references in ThaiVisa's Chiang Mai Portal writing. I see there's only one or two Karate references on there, but it might be a good place to start. I see there is one Karate link at the end of the article. It's a small enough town that they'll know of anywhere else that might have exactly what you're looking for.

Good luck !
