#5333828 Isaan Trip Report

Posted NanLaew on 2012-05-26 17:10:40

Honestly can't say I have come across any Chinese land or business ownership in my neck of the Isaan woods and never, ever heard of any major Vietnamese incursions. However, Isaan is a huge geographical area and there's no denying that some areas may be of more interest to foreign investment than others. Where I live, the local farm land prices have been rising due to investments in rubber by southern Thais after their wipe-out in the southern provinces flooding early last year. More recently, Bangkok Thais of Chinese ethnicity have been buying more urban land after they 'discovered' Isaan when hiding from the 'flood that never was' in Bangkok. This isn't the same as the Chinese buying it IMHO.

Other statements about pretty local girls, teen pregnancies, indolent, whisky drinking males, foreign-owned mansions could have been copy-pasted from any of the mostly negatively-biased forums or 'travel guides'. The view that the incumbent Thai is only keen on selling his land and daughters to foreigners is just too sweeping a generalisation. As for the lack of motivation to get an education; in light of what a total shambles the Thai educational system is with its perpetual focus on making sure that dumb kids from families with money get schooling and the bright but impoverished ones can go to blazes, maybe they aren't really missing out on anything.

I mean, what is the OP's point? He is married to an Issan lady therefore is this his last hurrah of objective reporting before assuming his own position in the community in question with a decent house, a couple of cars, a noodle shop out front and a wife who wants to rub the neighbours noses in something?

Not exactly ground-breaking technology used here.....its called the "Find IPhone" app which every IPhone user should have installed as standard. Very easy to locate your phone with this app.
Good police work, at least they caught her.

At this point I would suggest that the OP would not be a client that I would wish to manage.  Despite numerous relevant posts we have heard nothing more from them.  I would imagine that project managing this client effectively would be counter-productive to a busy web builder.

Or maybe he just couldn't be arsed anymore after his thread was hijacked by a bunch of condescending know-it-all smart-arses trying to show off to each other.  I certainly would have run a mile if it was me.

"I would imagine that project managing this client effectively would be counter-productive to a busy web builder."  I mean.....sheesh.

Let me put it like this... the key is getting as close as possible to top of the front page of google (for relevant key words/phrases).. there are various ways to get there; SEO consultants can certainly help

Let me put it another way; I do the SEO for the sites that I have created so the keys are clear to me. It doesnt cost GBP400/month to do this and anyone paying out that sort of money is just lining the pockets of the SEO consultant as far as I'm concerned. Of course, it's your money and you are entitled to do what you want with it.

But of course I'm just a Dreamweaver user. Posted Image

It's the all knowing Americans/Canadians that could do with leaving.
Really, is there any country left without these world police parasites knocking about.

This thread had the potential of being informative to a good many and you have shown your ignorance and bad manners in so uncertain terms!
Try saying that to  the faces of our American & Canadian cousins  instead of being the typical keyboard coward!

OP, you failed to educate your wife in these matters.
When we moved over here, 1km from my wife's family, she told them they should not visit us without being asked and to stay away from the fridge.
They do comply for more than 10 years now.

At the risk of starting a fight that's ridiculous. To make it even worse you appear to be proud of it, what is going through your mind when you impose a rule like that in this most family friendly of countries?

In fact even more to the point in which country is it acceptable to say to family members don't visit without an appointment?

Appropriate in US.  The delivery of the message is better handled with some tact and respect, but the message can be delivered nonetheless.  I would not dare allow someone into my home if they showed up without having made prior arrangement unless they were in need of some help.  I would walk to the door, and simply tell them, politely, that they cannot come in because something is being done in the house or that my wife and me are arguing something very private and important.

And, as for the silly comments about accepting certain behaviors because we're in Thailand...  How quaint a concept.  The truth is that if you are in a respectful relationship where there is communication and deeper understanding of each others' boundaries and preferences, then you are less likely to have something like this occur.

What happens often (not necessarily in the case of the OP, bc I of course don't know him) is that guys marry uneducated whores or just uneducated farm girls (or the like), and the two not being able to really communicate effectively find themselves in a relationship that is glued together by economics of money and sex.  The communication and deeper understanding of each other is hard to navigate as there is no single language they both speak fluently enough to actually sit down and have deeper, meaningful conversations with each other.

This type of crap does not happen with educated girls and in marriages (or other relationships) where there is proper communication.  Even within a good percentage of Thai only families, this kind of thing does not happen with consideration.

EDIT:
I'm quite convinced that many of these issues are simply caused by socioeconomic class issues rather than cultural issues.  Has less to do with Thailand and more to do with marrying into poverty and lack of education perhaps on the part of the majority chavs and similar who come over here and the farm girls they tend to marry.  Respectable families in Thailand are normally quite a world different.

Quite a number of negative comments here. Thais do visit each others, family bonds are very strong. If you don't like it, why do you live here, I wonder.
This is very interesting.
I for ones live here, because I want to experience life abroad and a different culture.
Question also could be "why does his wife is in an intercultural relationship, if she doesn't care sh@t for farang culture"?
Ever thought about it that way?
No?
Didn't think so!

there is no such thing like "passive cooling". any cooling is "active". what is commonly called "passive cooling" is nothing but avoiding heat transfer by various means.

i feel more sorry for these guys than jealous. i can only imagine what is going through the girl's mind: "I wonder how many guys it will take to throw him off the balcony?" etc. I always figured that most of these guys are just incredibly naive.

When I read an OP like this, it does make me wonder what brought the OP to Thailand in the first place.  What sort of expectations did he have?  Was his first visits to Thailand to Pattaya and other tourist places only?  Did he think that all Thai women were like Thai bargirls?  Did he really believe that he was a "hansum man?"   Did he not know that Thailand was a developing nation?  Did he not know about the visa laws?  When somebody becomes this disenchanted with Thailand, it's usually because the reality couldn't live up to the expectations.  I hope his expectations of life in Paris--or anywhere else--is a little more realistic.  Otherwise, I doubt he will ever find true happiness.

#3903430 Thai Immigration Introduces Jail Time For Overstayers

Posted meaowma on 2010-09-24 07:41:49

Why give an amnesty - if you overstay then you have broken the law. You do not do it accidentally you set out to do it so take the punishment. I am all for the law being applied fairly and firmly. A period in the slammer would at least go some way to making sure these people do not do it again but I think it should be a day for day punishment overstay 50 days then 50 days inside. Blacklisting is pointless as it only ensures that the passport does not return to the kingdom it does nothing to stop the person getting a new passport and re-entering under a new name etc etc.

As soon as Thailand does something positriver everyone thinks they do it for money - well I can asure you that most countries have strict immigration laws and they apply them - Thailand tolerates foreigners and we should never forget we are mere visitors in the kingdom and should act accordingly.

Put them in the slammer day for day.

#3890034 Why Don'T You Leave ?

Posted sillyman99 on 2010-09-18 02:38:08

There are so many posters here who are obviously unhappy living in Thailand, I have to ask the question,

Why do you stay in Thailand if your'e so unhappy ?

You left your country of birth, your own people, your own culture and language because you thought Thailand would offer you more.

So, when it doesn't, why do you stay and be unhappy ?

You were unhappy in your own home countries so you left, so what stops you leaving Thailand ?
