In Topic: Advice On Choosing A Gym - Pattaya

2011-09-22 15:44:32

I have been physically active all my life and go daily to a gym. My advice is if you want to loose weight, a gym might not be the best place to start.  You might feel uneasy with a lot of fit people around you. And to be honest, in your shape you will not be able to lift a lot of weights, meaning you will not burn many calories. If you put in a lot of effort and your weight does not go down, giving up is not far away. To burn calories you better use the big muscles you got, and that is your legs. Easy jogging or walking in hilly terrain (or stairs if you manage) are good exercises that will burn a lot of calories. Especially with all the extra weight you are carrying. One kilo body fat is about 13000 calories, so don't expect to loose many kilos per week. People who do that without excessive exercise are in reality loosing water and/or squeezes some kilos of old sins into the toilet. Those kilos comes back very quickly.

And of course change your diet. Try to stay around 1500 calories a day while also exercising. Don't starve yourself. Stay away from energy drinks, you don't need them and they are pure calorie bombs. Don't buy into that low carb stuff. That is for people without willpower that think they can loose weight without doing any effort. I promise you if you can get over the initial hurdle of eating little, you will be disgusted by excessive eating. Will take a couple of weeks, but easy going after that.

Finally, it will be hard. You will have periods where your weight loss stops or even gain a little. To keep motivation I recommend you buy a scale and weigh yourself every morning and evening. Maybe you can write some reports here on your progress? Will keep you motivated for not cheating ;) Good luck!

In Topic: Buying Off The Plan Condo

I personally bought off plan 6 years ago from View Talay, They are probably the only company I would touch for off plan, they don't build award winning buildings but they do build what they say they'll build. I bought in VT7 and it was a LONG four years to completion. But because I got in at the start I got a front unit at a price that has since appreciated in value.

I WOULD NEVER DO THIS AGAIN. It's to nerve wracking

I agree. Building schemes like View Talay is the safest you can get if buying off plan. You get a bare shell and fit it out yourself. Then you can have control over the materials and finishing, and dont have to endure air conditions to weak to cool the rooms, hoods that just blow air into the ceiling, uneven tiles of the cheapest Chinese grade, leaky windows, bad grouting and so on. Typically things you either dont notice at first or you have no chance in getting the builder to rectify no matter what the contract says. Then again, I would not like to live in VT, but that is another story...

All you get is a signed contract and receipts for deposit and downpayments. Title deed can not be issued before the building is completed, even if you should pay in advance. My advice to you is never buy off plan unless you have no problems walking away from it all. Contracts dont mean much in this country, and a builder's good reputation not much more. What you are shown in the prospect is at best similar to the end result. Build finish, material quality and completion time will almost without exception be inferior to what is expected. I bought off plan once, never again... The upside is there, but the downside risk is so much greater. I could elaborate a lot, but nobody listens to advice anyway... :)

Good luck,

In Topic: The Miracle Years Of Amazing Thailand: TAT Sets Ambitious Goal To Double Tour...

You can always depend on Amazing Thailand.  When things are bad rise the prices.

If I had a cent for every ignorant on Thai visa stating lowering prices magically raises revenue I would be well off. Why not lower prices when times are good? Should make even more profit, right? Lower the price until it is free, and you should get a fantastic profit... This board is becoming more and more a waist of time. Whatever is said or done by Thais, the whining brigade comes out to spew their confused understanding of society. Nothing wrong with pointing out bad stuff, corruption, lunacy or whatever, I am all for it, but the thoughtless repetitive whining we can do without. Even when fees for tourist visas where waivered the whiners complained.

I think the doubling of tourist arrivals are way to ambitious and will not happen on such a small budget and such a short timeframe. I dont even think the capacity is there should it eventually happen, but there are ways to say this in more thoughtful  manners than most people on this board do. Letting people easily stay years and years on tourist visa is not what will take them there, regardless what some lowbudget retiree will tell us on this board.

This is true...the page is from the Thai embassy in Cambodia's website (not the Thai MFA in Bangkok) and some of the provisions pertain to Cambodians nationals applying for tourist visas for Thailand. (like the copy of the ID card). As I have never reviewed this site before, I don't know if the airline/hotel reservation requirements are new or have always been there but ignored. One would have to check other local embassy/consulate sites in some other countries to see if this is a new policy from Bangkok or only particular to the Cambodian embassy.

If you then check the MFA's website for tourist visa issuance, while they mention the entry/exit flight ticket requirement (which has always been there but unenforced...at least for "desirable" tourists) the hotel reservation stuff is not listed. Therefore, likely it's just a local Cambo policy.

Interesting.

Lopburi? Mario2008?  Could you make light of this? Is this just to do with Cambodia?

Or is the Thai Embassy in Cambodia simply the first to heed the order and revise their website?

Not the first. I was hit with these EXACT restrictions way back in mars 2010 in the Thai Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. To me it seems like the policy about issuing tourist visas vary among the various embassies. Never had problems getting a Thai visa in any other South American countries or Europe. I guess it is up to the individual consular/ambassador and now the embassy in Cambodia have tightened their policy.

With danger of getting this post deleted, I must say I am not impressed by the sensationalist style of Thai Visa. Seems like way to often they leave out crucial information just to make a "better" story.
