Well I don't know why I came here tonight,

I got the feeling that something ain't right,

I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair,

And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs,

Clowns to the left of me,

Jokers to the right, here I am,

Stuck in the middle with you.

#5333790 Why Do You Never See The Asking Price Displayed On A Used Car

as far as i know most western countries it is the law to put the price of a used car on the car ( dealers) in thaialnd it is not

It's different: To put a pricetag on a used car, the dealer need a License. License cost about 10'k per year. Most of dealers avoid to pay that amount of money, so they can not put price tags on their cars.

Another thing: Can not "play" around with a "trade in", therefore no price tag.

Private sales on the road is forbitten to put a price tag. Can only put the tag "Sale" and the phonenumber.

#5331723 Penalty For Drink Driving In Thailand

It's funny that so many people on this forum slag off Thai people for not being good drivers (and other things) and then it turns out that many of the drink and drive themselves. Double standards.

That's not so bad, when I moved over here in late 2007 the pound was around 74 baht, last time I transferred money over it was at 47 baht!

When I moved here it was 25 Baht for a Dollar and I saw 38 baht for a Pound in the early 90's..

You guys that came to Thailand after the 97 crash are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think it's ever gonna go back to the rates you would like, let's face it, the western world is screwed,

Makes me laugh when I see on this forum so many anti Thai posts, the Thais couldn't do this , the Thai's couldn't do that, well guess what , Farangs are in control of your home countries and look what a mess they have made of it, such a mess you choose to live in Thailand, a country run by Thais.

It can be a really big deal to be caught in public without your passport.  At the minimum, have a copy of the front page and your visa page.

Personally, I wouldn't travel anywhere away from home without my passport.  Just not worth the risk.
Having lived here 32 years I have NEVER (other than for opening a bank account) been asked to produce my passport or work permit by anyone. For airline and hotel a Thai driving license/teaching license or even a visa card (with photo) has been sufficient.
That's not the point.  The point is carrying a passport is a requirement, and if unlucky, the consequences are not fun.  Odds are it will never happen, but that doesn't mean it won't.  It's a requirement for being here in Thailand.  Ignore the requirement at your own risk.
We all take risks every day. Not carrying your passport is such a small risk that it's not worth the hassle to carry to everywhere. most people drink alcohol. If you're unlucky the consequences can be very serious, including death. But people still take the risk. So I will risk walking around without my passport. It's a bigger risk carrying it around, as it is more likely to get lost or stolen. And that would be a major hassle. So for me it's less risk not to carry it.

Isn't buying pre cooked food just laziness.Very few people I would suggest don't have kitchen. Buying mashed potaoes and  casserole packs when you can cook up more than you need at home, and leave what you dont use, in the fridge for another day. Maybe a poll on who uses the fresh food markets and saves heaps of money against buying at Rimping/Tops would confirm that the take away mentality is alive and well in CM.

That same logic can be applied to every consumer good under the sun.   Do you also buy freshly cut trees to carve your own furniture?   Do you buy cotton to make your own clothes?  Both of those would would save you heaps more money than just going to the store and buying pre-made items.  Does that mean you're just lazy?

Its really about convenience, I guess..   Just as you probably lack the time and the skills necessary to convert raw cotton to thread, weave it to cloth and then stitch your own clothes, the same concept applies to other people when it comes to preparing food.

Some of us are not old retirees, with nothing better to do that waste our time cooking elaborate dinners while we wait to die.   Some of us have full time jobs where we put in 60, 80 hours a week and/ or don't know how to cook. Sure I could squander what precious little free time I have left over in the week to try to prepare a casserole.   But I'd much rather drop a little coin on a pre-made one and be able to dedicate my remaining free time to more meaningful pursuits.

-Mestizo
"...........wait to die."  Come on, that's a bit strong. I'm a retiree and I don't have enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to do.
Hi
gennisis Please before you post about Sausage King Get your facts right we do not sell mash potato or gravy at 120 Baht We sell at 70 Baht each But we do sell sausage with mash and gravy as a ready made meal at 129 baht. We sell our meals much cheaper and much better quality then the rest. Maybe somebody put you up to this post ??? if you look at our section in Rimping we have put a price list up so customers can see clear our cheap prices before they buy Not like some who sell at Rimping for nearly double our price.
This whole thing of bashing of SK is no different than the jealous competitors who bash the success of the Dukes, jealous bookstore owners who bash Gecko's success, etc., etc. It really gets old.

#5318241 Dhl Prices

Posted CharlieH on 2012-05-21 08:05:17

If you use a courier (dhl / ups etc) you are most likely to get hit hard on duty.
I would use the Thai Post Office, if you need it sent quickly use the EMS service.
Full info and prices available online.

#5304960 I Need Help Choosing The Right Diet For Me...

Posted JuliaThazinMayerhofer on 2012-05-16 13:26:06

Hey,

unfortunately Thai food is not that healthy as we always consider it to be. There is sugar, MSG and fish sauce in a lot of dishes - and many dishes are a combo of simple carbs and saturared fats (e.g. pad thai and fried rice) - which is no go for any weight loss programme. So really the only way for you to live a healthy lifestyle is to prepare your own food. Since you do not have a kitchen, here are some other suggestions you can get at 7-11 and big supermarkets:
- Instant oatmeal
- Boiled sweet potato is available in supermarkets and at street stalls
- Low-fat yoghurt or greek yoghurt with berries
- Fruits: apples, grapefruit, cantaloupe - strawberries & mango are too high in sugar
- Boiled eggs can also be found at 7-11
- Canned tuna
- Almonds and other nuts (buy natural ones, not salted/roasted)

If you really want to change your diet what you need is a healthy lifestyle with sufficient amount of protein, moderate carbs (preferably in the morning, before and after training) and some healthy fats like olive oil, salmon and nuts. Carbs should be complex such as oatmeal, sweet potato, brown rice, quinoa, whole grains etc. I would recommend the ratio of 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fat.

Regarding the training: Do you also work out with weights or only cardio? Working with weights is key to loosing fat and even if you have problems with your knees there are ways to work around it.

Feel free to message me, I am also training people and always happy to give advice and inspire others to live a health life.

#5290125 Professionals To Inspect And Assess The Property Condition

Posted Darrel on 2012-05-11 01:06:43

"As part of a property purchase process, I'd like to have a professional inspect and assess the condition of the perspective property."

Why bother?

Even in the West such "professionals" charge a fortune, do virtually nothing and accept little or no liability when they get it wrong.

What makes you think that anyone doing this here would be in any way more worthwhile?

#5311555 Things I Don'T Really Miss When In Thailand...

Posted HardenedSoul on 2012-05-18 18:47:42

Paying near on a fiver to go from zone 2 to zone 1 on the London Underground in conditions that would be illegal if transporting livestock.

The feeling that every aspect of your life must be organised and planned to the nth degree to avoid being hit with fines, penalties or charges. Got to have change for the parking meter, got to pay congestion charge online, Gatso cameras, extortionate insurance, banks trying to plug their balance sheets buy charging for anything that involves more than speaking.

Don't get me started on women who ask "Where's this going?" after the first shag.

#5305966 Pound Hits 50, How Long Will The Trend Last?

Posted CHANGOVER on 2012-05-16 19:20:42

Yes 72/3- £ was good but as it's been dropping since then it's easier to live just NOT making the mental conversion! After enough time most people think in Baht and not £'s (or their home currency).

!0/12 years ago diesel was12 baht/litre, it's now nearly 31/litre here! I still drive as far.

I won't even mention the price for a case of Chang ;-) but ....yes I still drink it!

#5300137 Thai Employees 'Restless': Survey

Posted geriatrickid on 2012-05-14 17:45:56

Unhappiness goes hand in hand with poor employment practices. Discrimination based upon physical appearance, age, ethynic origin, religion and sex are the norm in Thailand. Throw in ridiculous working hours and a wage system that is unfair and what would you expect?
