Drove down to tak and back to Chiang mai no problems no wrecks just a lot of water, the loss of life is a shame but then again I am here for the mai bpen rai life style and if people where honest that is the reason many of you came here as well but now you want it to be like home. Get a grip no nanny state here unless you are rich and famous
The mai bpen rai lifestyle is great? So you wouldn't complain if a loved one got killed/maimed by a drunk driver? Some rules are necessary (like a ban on drink-driving), but I agree not to the level of nanny states like some countries in the west. There can be compromise.

Its a Bit like Moving next to a Golf Course and complaining because you GET smacked with a Ball .

Yes , there is a huge element of Danger on the roads no doubt ..But you knew that when you came here , you must be escaping from something or you wouldn't live here ..there must be something drawing you to Thailand ??

You cant just move in ..say Great ..Ive been here for 15 years ..Now this is wrong ..that is wrong ..They have to change etc etc etc etc

" They " dont have to do anything , and Yep , its a dangerous , unregulated place in many respects . But many of us dont WANT it to be the UK , USA .. or anywhere else ..we came to get away from that . The answer is obvious ...

Everything Cannot be perfect .. This is NOT Europe .. and thank Buddah for that !

#5223035 Warning - Pattaya Now Has Alcohol Breath Testing In Daily Use

Nice bit of writing. My SEO copywriter would be proud.

The problem is they only enforce this once or twice per year when the big guns comes down from Bangkok. The rest of the year, even if you can hardly stand, they cops will help you into your car and sent you on your way with a smile and "please drive careful".  Consistency is needed.

It is also first time I've heard they don't take bribes.  The previous occasions it seems you were guided to a table where you were told "pay 10,000 baht now or go to court".  Expensive, but a way out.  But that's again the selective enforcement that seems to be common here.

I think the treatment is outrageous and I'm sure not providing you a translation of the proceedings and what you sign is probably against a dozen international human rights conventions.

Do you have any idea what a taxi charge you to take you from downtown to the dark side?  Not all of us live in downtown Pattaya.

I live in siam royal view.I get a baht bus service that takes care of the hotel down the road near the railway crossing.2 hundred baht in tuk tuk.Would cost less if i took motorbike taxi but what is a hundred baht. From walking street back to home at 4-6 in the morning a tuk tuk costs me 3 hundred baht.
So 5 hundred baht.Which is nothing if you compare it to having a accident or causing someones death while in your car or on motorbike.
It certainly is better spending 5 hundred baht then getting locked up for the night or even worse dying. If you got a moto taxi probably hundred baht to walking street and 1-2 hundred baht going home.
People complain about that but will have no problem spending 2-10 thousand baht on a good night out.
dont drink and drive not worth it

If you spend " 2-10 thousand baht on a good night out" you are probably a tourist. I generally spend less than 1,000 baht on a night out, and spending an additional 500 baht going in and coming back is rediculous when you think of the official taxi (proper, air-conditioned sedans)  prices in Bangkok. If you suddenly want to start enforcing the DD laws here then enforce the taxi laws as well while you're at it.

#5174114 Firebomb Blasts Rock Phuket Housing Estate

Posted notime on 2012-03-29 12:42:36

My house was also bombed a year ago although nobody was injured so the fact didn't make the news. It was done with a few round firework "bombs" thrown over the fence at a vacant lot opposite the house. The windows shook and the whole area caught fire. All neighbors come out to dose it with buckets of water. Of course there was nobody to be seen after these blasts as the culprits left quickly through the adjoining property. I believe this was done by local mafia boys who intended to scare me and "make me understand" who I was dealing with at that time. Welcome to foreigner heaven of Koh Samui! I only write this to report how things really are here.

#5065471 Erosion On North Pattaya Bay Beach Is Getting Worse

The previous lights worked and like anything else in Pattaya, no maintenance will be kept with these "Disney" street lights so once the paint fades, the curved looped steel ribbon decoration gets clipped by some passing truck or bus it will just sit there until the next decade. Meanwhile the money (and time) could have gone towards reparing the sidewalks so tourist wouldn't twist their ankles or break their legs when walking on the decaying Pattaya walkways. But making repairs to the sidewalks for an example isn't as "fun".
I lived in Pattaya for several year's. Thank Buddha now out of the to my mind a rat hole. And this sort of thing has been going on for decade's. As other poster's have pointed out in the past the city father's are a load of brain dead's, always have been always will be. The place is falling apart at the seam's.
Beach what's left of it is just a rubbish dump, Filth plastic broken bottles every ware. The main problem as I see it is that peep's still come and while that is the case nothing will ever be sorted.
May I suggest that everyone that call's the place home just live with it and enjoy the best as you can as it's never going to get any better. Sorry if I ruffled any feather's it's just my point of view. Now you can go out a get a lung full of Diesel fume's.

BTW - M3Dave I think you were given a bum steer about only tipping 100. You and your son would have spent upwards of 5000 for the day I imagine for golf, had a person 'work' for you for 4 - 5 hours and only give them 100tip. Yes, you have paid a caddy fee in your green fee - but the caddy doesn't get all of that - so the tip is important to supplement their income. Nature of the beast here to have to pay a caddy, but regardless of what they do - aside from losing a club, stealing from you or dropping your golf bag in a water hazard (have seen it happen!) - 200 baht is the unwritten minimum tip. They are not rich like you are so better just to consider it as a 'donation' for the caddy to help their family.
I gave up playing golf because of all the crap.

Much higher fees than the Thais pay, the utterly useless but forced upon me caddies, the massively long rounds and all the cheating. I am not interested in spending 5 to 6 hours on a golf course for a single round.

Nope, bugger it, golf in Thailand is not for me.

#3925697 What Do Farang Get Out Of The Farang Bar Scene?

Posted Chunky1 on 2010-10-03 19:09:00

You go into a bar geared towards the farang and the first thing that happens is an unattractive woman attempts to converse with you in order to size you up as a potential mark asking you a series of questions in order to gauge your naivety and desperation. And you are supposed to be paying for this experience? You would have to pay me to sit in one of these bars, yet somehow it is the thriving lifeblood of Thailand's tourist industry?

#3907439 Who Will Be The First Member With 1000 Red Marks?!?

Posted Jingthing on 2010-09-25 18:45:49

I hereby enter myself in a contest of my own imagination.
Who will be the very first member to get to the exalted level of 1000 red reputation marks!?!
Of course, I am betting on myself, but other worthy challengers are most welcome to join in the race.
To make this prize, you will need as many "friends" ironic and otherwise to give you as many of their TWO allotted daily reds as possible.
This is a MUCH MORE DIFFICULT challenge than getting 1000 greens. That's for pussies.
People are allotted the power to give many, many greens everyday. But only a mere TWO reds.
So this is really a grand challenge.

I also do wonder what the reputation text will read at the 1000 red mark.
I am hoping to be the first to get there, and if it is configurable as I suspect it is, I suggest SATAN.

If they want to clear out the rubbish, introduce a 1 month amnesty after that anyone who overstays should be fair game.

A welcome move, indeed.

Posted surayu on 2010-09-24 07:21:20

Oh finally a good news! i was so concerned about going out at night time (but even during the day for that matter), knowing that i might eventually came across one of the very feared "overstayers" , i can cope with almost any sort of issues or dangers, but having to deal with a man/woman which is not a "quality tourist" is already bad enough, leave alone someone which break this vital law! is just too much, nevermind the killers, scammers, abusers, cheaters, thiefs around us, the constant chronic break of safety standards and human rights, etc.., go and get the overstayers that's the real crime in this country, the main priority for the resolution of all major problems affecting the country for sure,  thank you amazing Thailand! :D

This might come in handy since I'm looking to go to Thailand in late 2011. Which time of the year is cheapest to travel to Thailand?

Usually October/November - when it is wettest. Lots of airline deals then.

Your travel ignorance appears to have no bounds !

The wettest time in Thailand is June to September. It was late arriving this year.

Depends how you want to travel. There don't seem to be any real bargains around with the Middle East airlines (I was booking for under £400 last year). EVA fly direct and their 'up to one month stay' prices seem good value - £504 being quoted on their Hot e-fare.

November to February is the most temperate period in central parts (inc Pattaya, Bangkok)

I am sorry to have to refute your incorrect post but it seems you are unaware that November is the rainiest month of the year for  Samui, Phangan etc. The rainy season down south doesn't actually start until October with November being the peak month.

#3833457 Solason Solar Energy Company

Posted dalmatian on 2010-08-23 19:00:45

I am in possession of Solason Solar Panel Heating system, it is a good system and rarely goes wrong until the other day. I have had the system nearly 8 years and the only previous problem was the pump staying on even when hot water turned off. The problem then was a sensor on the roof, I think I have same problem so am trying to get hold of the company maintenance team. My problem is that a couple of months I accidentally flushed my old phone down the toilet and it had all my numbers on it. As much as I have built up most of my phone book again I don't have a number for Solason that is valid. I phoned the number on the guarantee but does not get answered.

Reason for topic to find out if anybody else out there has Solason and if so do you have their maintenance team phone contact. I believe they are based out of Bangkok but I was told they come to Pattaya once a week to answer calls for customers problems. Would appreciate any contact details.

At worst I could call another company who have a similar system and I am sure they may be able to assist me with my problem but want to try to get hold of Solason first. Thanks in advance guys....
