#5271700 Thai Parliament Quarrel Escalates In Hitler Salute

Posted gbswales on 2012-05-03 23:43:41

Surely all he is doing is comparing the speakers behaviour to that of a dictatorship. He is not "glorifying" or "praising" Hitler, just making a protest a protest about the speaker!

The ability of newspapers and journalists to make something out of nothing never ceases to amaze me. Thailand is a country that wasnt really actively involved in WW2, at least not the German part of it. I doubt it has any significant Jewish population to offend and in any event the accusation was aimed at an individual so clearly no one but that individual could take offence. He could just as easily have done a Russian or Burmese salute to make the same point and no one would be saying anything!!

Journalists - please focus on the political issues that actually affect people and stop bothering with the antics of a few flamboyant politicians - it seems the world is obsessed with the personal and public behaviour of people rather than on whether they do a good job or not.  We have the same problem in UK with hysterical people screaming everytime a footballer or pop star does something in his/her private life which has no direct connection with their job! it is the same when a politician has an affair or engages in some kinky sexual activity - if it is not illegal what  concern should it be to anyone how they enjoy themselves.

From what I see he was not being given a chance to get his view across so he was being sarcastic in suggesting that the house speaker was a dictator.

I've lived through 6.5+ magnitude earthquakes centered near where I was staying at the time...

What the heck are the Thais getting all worked up about over some pissy little temblors...

They have no clue what a real BIG earthquake would do to their lives.
Bit of a careless comment have you lost friends and family to a quake because alot of Thais have maybe that's why they panic can't really blame them

How about a road safety campain 24/7, not just lip service during holidays.  How about the police actually doing their jobs and enforcing the law.  How about requiring that drivers actually take driving lessons and actually pass  a drivers test.  None of this slip the police 100 baht to ignore the infraction or slip the test examiner 1000 baht to get the license nonsense.

Nothing will change until all the corruption stops.  So not in my lifetime.
some scary public information films on drunk driving would be useful , same as they show every xmas time in the UK with kids being killed and the spirit leaving the body , i think it would scare the sh*t out of thais , ............ well worth it if it saves a life though ! , i can never understand why there are no safety ads on thai TV , at least it would make the people think the Govt cares .
They don't want to offend people, sad but true.

Drove down to tak and back to Chiang mai no problems no wrecks just a lot of water, the loss of life is a shame but then again I am here for the mai bpen rai life style and if people where honest that is the reason many of you came here as well but now you want it to be like home. Get a grip no nanny state here unless you are rich and famous
I agree to some extent but as a lifelong motorcyclist, getting a bucket of water thrown in my face when I have my wife or son on the bike makes me bloody angry. No to the UK style "nanny state" but yes to just a little bit of common bloody sense.

The mai bpen rai lifestyle is great? So you wouldn't complain if a loved one got killed/maimed by a drunk driver? Some rules are necessary (like a ban on drink-driving), but I agree not to the level of nanny states like some countries in the west. There can be compromise.

Its a Bit like Moving next to a Golf Course and complaining because you GET smacked with a Ball .

Yes , there is a huge element of Danger on the roads no doubt ..But you knew that when you came here , you must be escaping from something or you wouldn't live here ..there must be something drawing you to Thailand ??

You cant just move in ..say Great ..Ive been here for 15 years ..Now this is wrong ..that is wrong ..They have to change etc etc etc etc

" They " dont have to do anything , and Yep , its a dangerous , unregulated place in many respects . But many of us dont WANT it to be the UK , USA .. or anywhere else ..we came to get away from that . The answer is obvious ...

Everything Cannot be perfect .. This is NOT Europe .. and thank Buddah for that !

Note that the Muslim Southern Provinces had no fatal accidents. Shows what consumption of alcohol does to the statistics.
This is a very astute and interesting observation, and one that never occurred to me.  Thank you.

#5222114 3 Murders As Songkran In Thailand Turns Ugly

I've no doubt this will become a trend! Next year we won't be counting deaths by wreckless and drunk driving, but the number of murders. Posted Image

It really is time to clamp down and control the revelling. Limit it to controlled areas, where those who want an official soaking go to meet.

One really does sick and tire of songkran after some lengthy time living here!

-mel.

You are free to leave of living here is no longer enjoyable for you. Some of us are happy to join in with the fun. And don't forget that these are isolated incidents. Millions have enjoyed themselves. You get deaths and major events in almost all countries. Just look at the UK and USA. There are plenty getting shot and knifed every day, not just during festivals. A few isolated incidents, even if really bad, is no reason to ban a popular festival. The solution is to stop the idiots, not spoil the fun for the law-abiding people. It is the idiots that are the problem, not Songkran. Idiots are everywhere. Some of you boring expats would ban almost every activity of you could. If you don't like it here, then just leave instead of constantly complaining.

in thailand its more out doors ,
in europe its more indoors.
outdoors is more in yeh face.
but i think " same same but different "

In Europe too bloody cold to be outside. But I think that such comments are unnecessary and gives a completely wrong impression of the vast majority of Thais, male and female who have no connect to the sex trade in their business or private lives. Pattaya is not Thailand and a small percentage of what Thailand is really about. If anyone thinks that, by living and frequenting sex bars, this is a true representation of Thailand then for sure you need to get out more!

I'd love to take some of the more bigoted, arrogant  and drunk journos I've ever met and dump them in a country where they don't speak the language, then take the piss out of them every time they make a grammatical error or don't understand something. Ffs *I* have trouble understanding ENGLISH speaking dialects sometimes and I'm 100% monolingual....

"And as I made my way out of the Grand Ballroom I ran into Pheu Thai MP Jarupan Kuldiloke and told her that perhaps the premier would benefit from some English-language practice."

I'm surprised you didn't top it off with a cunning linguist joke.

If I was her I'd have replied that perhaps you would benefit from some practice with getting your head out your ass...
