#5111915 Checking A House'S Building Quality

Posted morphic on 2012-03-06 09:52:32

I have viewed tons of properties in Thailand and the quality has been uniformly abysmal. Paper thin walls, poor piping, cheap/nasty windows and doors, dangerous wiring and thats just what you can see. Look at these places in the process of construction, before they've had a chance to paint over the cracks and they look even worse.

And when they say "falang built", or "international", that is just marketing garbage. It just means a falang paid and did a little checking now and then, no doubt being laughed at and ripped off by the Thais who did even shoddier work than usual and cheated on the materials even more than they usually do. And international appears to mean one or two "families" that have come to dominate Pattaya construction, perfecting the art of becoming obscenely wealthy by selling crap to the ignorant.

I've seen enough, its just a waste of time. Rent, if you buy you will be stuck with it forever, paying through the nose for maintenance and constantly having to deal with Thais who will rip you off and do bad jobs at fixing the snowballing problems that will develop over time. Either that or put up with living in what will rapidly turn into a tip. Put up with the crappy smell from the bad sewage pipes, the leaking roofs, the ill fitting doors, the widnows that wont close properly, the air con that won't cool propely, etc etc etc. And because of the thin walls and ceilings, put up with endless neighbour noise, although that may be of lesser annoyance than the karaoke bar that may open just down the road after you've moved in, or have been there all the time without you noticing, the developer/agent someohow arranging viewing times to hide those kinds of unsavoury details.

How can any one take any notice of a tosspot like andy all he wants is freebies.if he can do any thing about the visa system or getting the  increase in the uk pension i will think he is a great prince.

Ah, yes, I remember - it's called "Freedom of Speech".

Legislation here doesn't allow such comments, so you'd be best to be thankful that you come from a country where the Monarchy is respected but not above criticism, and that the whole thing about GB is that you're allowed to make such insulting comments without fear.

Certainly there's a 'tosspot' here, but it's not Andy!
I will say it again Andy pandy is a user and a leach, and I will say this I have NO respect for the British monarchy.

#5096461 Bangkok's 'Hitler Chic' Trend Riles Tourists, Israeli Envoy

The sniff test on stuff like this is whether this paraphernalia would have been celebrated or condemned back during the Third Reich.

My guess is if stuff like this came out then, then the creators would have been taken out back and shot. It is clearly parody.

This story reminds me of the story of how KKK eventually lost its respectability in the 50's and 60's. Turned out the Superman comic writers got hold of KKK code words and figures of speech and used them in the 'baddies' dialogue in their comic strips. What was once 'secret' and solemn KKK code-speak was being used in kids playgrounds as the 'KKK badies' were being shot and killed by the good guys. Kids unintentional parody made the KKK look silly to potential and existing members.

For whatever reason, and I don't know why, it is socially acceptable for those of Jewish extraction to parody the Nazi's, but not for others to. I don't have a good explanation on why it is the case, but it just is. When someone else tries it, we get 450 posts of confected outrage.

For me, this art simply helps further ridicule the Nazi's, and in my book you can never have enough of that. If it somehow encourages someone in Thailand to go and look at the history, then even better.

But it is a bit much to read these posts from the dear souls who have been offended by this stuff complaining of ignorance and cultural insensitivity, when I'm guessing that they are living in Thailand and perform cultural faux pas on a regular basis and are probably pretty ignorant of Thai and greater Asian history.

... "If fact, if the authorities perform their duties honestly and to their best ability, Thailand may not need additional laws to deal with this issue. The anti-money laundering effort requires the best and brightest people who are free from political pressure." - excerpt

______________________________________________________________________________

... yeah ... like that's going to happen.

... sadly, what I extrapolate from this is that Thais need foreigners to save them from themselves ... desperately.

... inferior cultural values are now indemic here, rendering Thais incapable of saving themselves ... Thai culture values seem in a death spiral, and now past the tipping point, where there remains no moral tender capable of firing a blaze the likes of a Nelson Mandela, or Aung San Suu Kyi, or Mohandas Gandi.

... Thai greed is now more powerful than the Thai's Buddha.

... I am so deeply saddened for my Thai children.

Thai's buddha?? Where did you happend to find this Thai's buddha anyway? Do you mean Thai's have their own buddha or buddha is belong to Thais? What is buddha got to do with this story anyway?
.
... Amal2029 … approximately 95% of Thais are Buddhists ... I cite the Buddha as a key to understanding Thai cultural values and behaviors ... Thailand is interminably corrupt, to which the article draws attention.

... I am careful to differentiate the "Thai's Buddha,” from the Buddhism practiced in other Buddhist nations.

... a Korean friend, and devout Buddhist, who has spent a lot of time here observed that he believes Thai Buddhism has been hijacked no differently than the Koran has been hijacked by radical Muslims, or Branch Davidians hijacked the Bible … he suggested that Thai Buddhism is deformed to serve the goals of ruling elites to pacify the population, and that it’s practice would be unacceptable in other Buddhist nations.

... I am no Buddhist authority, but do understand there are differing sects of Buddhism … living as close to Thais as I have for over a decade now, I am inclined to accept my friend’s view of "Thai Buddhism” … you needn’t reach too far to see what he is talking about.
Please don't lecture on Buddhism when obiously you have not the faintest knowledge about it.Posted Image

... oh, please ... don't get your panties in a wad.

... I was unaware that being a Thai Buddhist authority is a prerequisite for questioning the curious correlation between a culture's predominant faith, and its widespread cultural values and commonly practiced behaviors.

... perhaps you will help me understand if it is reasonable that any nexus exists between Thai's overwhelmingly predominant faith and the values and behaviors even the most causal of Thai observers cannot help noticing.

... Thailand is one of the most corrupt nations on earth ... how does that happen? ... does the spiritual foundation upon which stands 95% of its citizens bear any responsibiity for that?

#4990194 Bad Farang Pub Service In Bangkok?

Posted p_brownstone on 2012-01-19 13:05:21

I prefer to have prompt but impersonal Service anywhere rather than the irritating attitude common in U.S. and other Western countries :

"Hi there, my name is Cathy and I will be your Server today. Oh - I do like that shirt, where did you get it? I'd like to buy one for my boyfriend - he's such a slob when it comes to clothes" etc. etc..

My attitude is - I came here to eat not gossip. You are not my friend, I have enough friends already, nor am I in the least interested in your personal opinions about anything - much less my wardrobe. Just take my Order and bring it in reasonable time and you will get a tip.
