#5268712 Farmers/Caretakers Wanted...

Posted IsaanAussie on 2012-05-02 20:40:27

I have watched this post for weeks to see what would happen. I have no idea of the details but to me the concept is great. There are many people here who have acquired property but cannot work it themselves. There are also many people who wish to live the dream without the means or are just looking to catch a breathe.
Not Shangrila stuff but a simple lifestyle of happiness.
Hope it works.

Today I had a new friend just drop in to help as he had nothing better to do. We didnt achieve much more than I would have by myself but had a great day.

This time of year is a real challenge. Rushing about with a hose to cool down panting pigs. They are drinking twice as much water and eating less. I am cleaning in the afternoon because the sty is the coolest place to be at that time of day and it gives the best effect for the then hot pigs.
But there is a cost! Having excreted most of they daily does in the morning there is a window of opportunity for them to then wallow in it and then smear it all over the walls. Grower pigs seem the worst offenders.
So added to the usual cleaning of the floors are the walls and the pigs.
We are actually cleaning and washing the growers in the morning because after eleven the water which has been heated by the sun in the pvc pipes is too hot to cool down the pigs. Also around 17.00 winds start to blow and rain purs down. Lat week I had too replace 15 roofpanels, which had just been ripped of the roof. We have to clean the walls from the pigs above 30kg  every two days now as well. The smaller ones seem to be alot cleaner, they all shit in the same spot and don't wallow in it too much  I have not noticed them eating much less. They seem to be very happy to drink, eat, lay down for a couple of minutes and start over again.. But we are at our farm at 06.00 am to open everything up to ensure that there is a lot of air circulation (after 18.00 or if there is a lot of wind we lower plastic sheets to keep the wind out at night).

#5236495 The Price Of A Rai

In the case of a legal land document, a friend of mine bought 82 rai and paid per rai. It was a legal document but NOT a chanote. He found that to sell a portion of the land, it needed to be upgraded to a chanote, be surveyed and boundary markers put in. The results of the survey came up with the property being 56 rai and the portions were each 28 rai. What recourse did he have? NONE. Apparently the original aerial survey was wrong. (?) I think that the Thai he used to buy the property knew the amount of land was misstated and my friend was cheated right from the start. Since the farang cannot own the property anyways, it was up to the Thai nominee to find out why there was such a large discrepancy. His nominee didn't choose to contest it. In order to get the Thai to sign off on the sale my friend had to give him half the land in addition to a rather large cash settlement.

I told my friend that he would be better off not to fight it because the Thai is under no obligation to give him anything.

Buyer beware.

It was your friend's fault for not exercizing proper due diligence.

When I bought land, I hired a surveyor to confirm the boundaries and dimensions.

#5095911 Attack By Ladyboys In Chiang Mai

Posted theblether on 2012-02-29 00:01:09

As many of you probably know I am Scottish. I was in Chiang Mai at New Years Eve and I decided to celebrate in the Scottish way and imbibe some whisky while attired in my kilt.

I did have a few worries before I went out, I believe there are a few Scots in Pattaya that wear kilts at that time of year but I hadn't seen or heard of anyone else wearing a kilt in CM. No sooner had I walked into the foyer of my hotel was I mobbed by people wanting photos with me, especially the ladies. Being the generous sort as I am I posed with all and sundry for ages, till it got to the point that it was interfering with my drinking time.

I opened a bottle of Highland Park whisky that I had brought for the occasion and I managed to get about an hour of drinking time in before I walked down to the Taepae Gate for the Bells. I had a few people from the hotel with me and I managed to get down there relatively unmolested. I went into one of my regular haunts, John's Place, and the photo merry-go-round started again. Fine, I was in the mood for a party, drank a lot more of the Highland Park, then went down to the stage show at the Gate. It was really busy, that suited me as I wasn't getting too much attention in the crowd. The Bells went off well, the fireworks were great, and then I noticed I had lost my travelling party.

Knowing Chiang Mai well, I headed down to Linda's Bar, ( mistake ) where I ended up having another photo shoot with every bad girl in Loih Kroh, I was drinking on and the ladies were getting a bit too frisky, it's a pain having people trying to lift your kilt every 10 seconds, so I headed up to Jack's Bar to get some peace, ( it's not as busy since Spicy moved round the corner). Anyway after I cracked into my second bottle of whisky and after some more photos, I realized it was getting late so I started heading home much the worse for wear.

This is where it all went wrong, I was drunk, mao mak, seriously gone, big mistake, and I couldn't find a tuk tuk, so I thought I would walk home along the moat.. Some gorgeous creature emerged from the shadows and did that "hellooooh, where you go?" thing. Remembering the old adage that if it is so beautiful you cannot believe thing in Thailand, it's a Ladyboy, I mumbled I'm going home. In came a request for a photo so that was fine, but within a minute I was surrounded by loads ( don't know how many ) ladyboys wanting a pic. I started getting harassed by the kilt lifting and the usual stupid "why you wear skirt, what under kilt questions?". Feeling under pressure I tried to get away but the next thing I was bundled into a car and told "we go party".

All I can say is that I was the star attraction at the party and they found out what Scotsmen wear below the kilt, I was held down and used as a pin cushion by I don't know how many Ladyboys and for how long, and it seemed there was an endless stream of Ladyboys arriving all the time. I don't know how long I was held for and I don't remember much. I must have fallen asleep and as soon as I woke I got out that door as fast as I could, I do know CM well but I didn't have a clue where I was, some giant decrepit building with broken down lifts and boarded fire escapes. It was just after day break and I wandered around aimlessly ( and painfully ) trying to find a tuk tuk, totally lost, and still drunk.

Eventually I got one, got back to my hotel, got showered, crashed out for hours and went about in a daze when I woke up. The people that I had lost the night before grilled me about where I had gotten too, and of course I couldn't tell them the truth.

I went to see the clinic for tests and they were clear, but they recommended doing it again in 30 days ( something to do with HIV antibodies? ) and they were clear too thank god.

So the medical side looks like it's going to be OK, Now I'm back in Scotland and my mind keeps wandering back to the memories of that night, of being used like a pin cushion in Chiang Mai,  and I need your advice.........

Shall I wear red kilt or a blue kilt next year?

#5160420 How To Grow A Chicken......

Posted Carib on 2012-03-24 08:35:49

Tried hydroponics-cultured ducks ones, with mixed results. The trick was to determine the right length of rope to keep them down and under in one place, with changing waterlevels they did tend to flock together and get entangled. One could lose a whole `crop` that way.

Ones fully grown they were absolutely amazing at synchronized swimming, really!
It had the advantage of them following each other with the same moves, catch one... and the rest of them would just follow. It kept the labor cost down considerably.

Global warming stepped in, the ponds became muddy, mud ducks didn't really ......oh well you get the picture.

What a breath of fresh air to the forum, well done guys to lighten things up.

I am told that you must be more selective in choosing the feathers you want to grow. Those from the anal areas have the best chance as they are pre-innoculated with fertiliser.

What kind of chickens?....rubber or boneless need a very rich soil and I hear the gestation period is quite long...
I planted some ivory a few years back ..still no elephants.
Now trying flip flops and rubber boots planted in old tyres ..hope to get some more rubber trees in a few years.

You blethering fool; Everyone knows that by planting feathers you will have `hen and chicks`, absolutely worthless for consumption and profit-wise a disaster.

http://en.wikipedia..../Hen_and_chicks

Planting the eggs is the way to go, after underground growth has started the little chicks will hatch in about 3 weeks, observe growth and as soon as they start to develop wings carefuly remove them from the chickentwig.
.
Depending on what market they are meant for feed them with basil (Thai market) or (Indian market) curry style food.

Well you certainly have the infrastructure side of well conceived, no problems there.

How long since you planted the feathers?

Because this is a particularly dry spell at the moment, maybe the soil has become water repellent and unable to absorb what you are providing.

In a recent post of yours I read that you are located near Chiang Mai?

Growing chickens from feathers is not the usual practise, but maybe Thai Farmers are used to traditional farming methods and this approach may be a time saver in the future.

Keep us updated on your progress and maybe a photo or two may help.

I know that Ian Forbes is an excellent photographer and illustration artist plus being a local resident in Chiang Mai and maybe he can assist you in this area.

Edit:  I just spoke with a few colleagues here on the Forum and they have an alternative solution to your problem.

It could be the case that the fertilizer you are using is of the wrong variety and that droppings from a sick buffalo (are they any other type in Thailand?) could be causing stunted or slow growth.

OH … Jicky Lovetakeupbumaphorn a local expert in these renal matters has chimed in and said that the special manure you should be applying comes from that of the rare ‘Spotted Buffalo’.

Also she went on to say that there could be the application of too much nitrogen and apparently Farmers who know their urine carries this compound regularly water their feathers in this way hoping for increased growth patterns from an early age.

My suggestion would be to hunt down that Spotted Buffalo and less the piss take to the feathers.
In a related subject I heard on the grapevine that Lek Takeitanywhereapon was also looking for that very same Buffalo as apparently the bull sh_ie which comes out is of the finest quality.

I hope that we have been of help to you here on the Farming Forum and if the feathers fail to sprout wings or develop as expected, please return with an update and we will try and assist you further.

Thanks IssanAussie for the post.

Humm ... Thai style escargot ... I'll think I'll pass.

As you rightly pointed out, the snails have a veracious appetite for vegetation (your water lettuce) but they seem to have made little inroads into the water hyacinth growing in the Klongs in the area.  Maybe one pest is out growing the other?

If everything goes to plan there will be another harvest at the Farm this week-end and I'll try ad update this post with things that are new.

There is one photo that the girl sent to me yesterday which I wanted to share because of the quality of the photo and reality of the lifestyle for the Fish Farmer.

DSCF0559.JPG
For me, this photo is a classic

To put this in a deeper perspective, the man on the far left of the photo is the Father.
He's ex-Navy and lost his half his leg in the service.
So he's out there with his prosthetic on, nearly knee deep in the mud helping with the last of the harvest.

Almost nothing slows him down ... I tip my hat to him.
