matter of fact[/u] that business sales consistently take a deep plunge in complete sync with malicious Red activity and acts of stupidity from the government. Following the horrifying taking hostage and subsequent burning of Bangkok in 2010, there has been a continual downward spiral of Middle to High income people making holidays in Thailand. Reds, PTP equal bad news for business... period. Mishandling of the floods, ineptness in taking care of the field burnings causing extreme and sickening air pollution, perpetual Red rallys to inconvenience and intimidate... it just goes on and on. Nobody wants to put down thousands of dollars to come on holiday to a place literally rampant and riddled with bad news & bad scenarios. I have friends who run touring businesses out of many different countries and they all say the same thing, Thailand has a bad name and people are now booking holidays to Vietnam, Angkor Wat, Laos and Bali. Thailand has shot itself in the foot and as I mentioned previously, I can no longer tolerate it and too will be leaving this stupidity shortly.
Your comments do not reflect the reality namely that the hospitality sector in Thailand is doing extremely well, and after the setbacks of the airport occupation and redshirt protests is achieving excellent results.Naturally the global economic difficulties are a challenge but overall Thailand and its tourist oriented businesses are doing extremely well.

Your suggestion that your unnamed business is suffering from the current government's policies is rather strange - and apparently deeply felt. This is not the common experience and perhaps you should consider whether your problems are caused by other factors. The fact that you dismiss all statistics and rational evidence suggests that the problems you face are related to poor management or other micro factors rather than the wider environment.
I have generated millions of dollars in past decades in my capacity as manager for previous companies I was employed at. I now have chosen to move back to Thailand to run my own business. So please do me a favor, either back up your claims with some substantiated and accountable facts or quit making juvenile cheap slurs against my management capabilities and shut up.

What is it about some of you people who feel compelled to spew out unsubstantiated claims and unfounded statements in an effort to simply put down and deny that which I and many, many fellow business owners have personally suffered and experienced? Your empty claims of the hospitality business doing just fine is absolute crap.  You try palming it off on ANY thing else instead of accepting the fact of how destructive this whole Shinawatra episode has been to the country and those trying to eek out a nominally decent standard of living.

Sure, world economic hardships have added to the challenge but I know plenty running businesses in China, Vietnam and Siem Reap along with friends in Europe who are thriving & all reporting decent numbers. I have 3 shops in Chiang Mai including one in a high profile hotel in the city.  And I can tell you with absolute certainty that over the past 3 years, starting with the invasion of the Pattaya ASEAN meeting and continuing to date, the malicious activities of the Thaksin support groups has done nothing but destroy the fabric of this once wonderful, beautiful country and has directly contributed greatly to the deterioration of the allure and the failure of countless businesses in this country.

I personally know dozens who own and operate businesses that run the gamut from retail souvenir spaces, classical & folk art galleries, bars and restaurants to hotels and guest houses, and I can guarantee you with no hesitation that things are NOT faring well for ANY of us these past 3 years since Thaksin decided to turn up the heat with his group of sub-par IQ lackys doing his bidding. Thapae Gate which normally thrives with vitality was a ghost town throughout the entire previous "High Season"! Hotels in this city are anemic at best and have been and still are struggling the past year! This goes for all the way from the Shangri-La & Le Meridian to the standard 1000 Baht a night spots. Numbers are WAY DOWN and I challenge you to produce some back up to your obviously dreamt up statement in an egotistically blind effort to try and put me down because you simply can't handle the truth.

You wrote, " It's been 10 months now and I can tell you that this has been the absolute WORST 10 months of my previous 7 years here."  Why?  That amazes me that a political party can do anything in 10 months good or bad.  So what happened to you that the party in power is responsible for?

As I recall the Red Tshirt Gang cried the worst when "nothing happened" in the first year under the previous administration. The point is that there were claims made by Thaksin that specifically gave time tables and which were promised in less than 10 months. Please re-read my post and reply specifically to the questions posed before skirting the issues and asking me what makes me sad about this pathetic government.

" It's been 10 months now and I can tell you that this has been the absolute WORST 10 months of my previous 7 years here."

Judging from the above you arrived in Thailand in July 2005, correct? Now tell me who was PM in the period July 2005 up until the coup in September 2006. Thaksin Shiniwatra is the correct answer.

Now this period, so we're told by the coup supporters, is where Thaksin finally lost it, was acting like an autocrat and the only saviour of democracy was (ironically) a coup to oust him. The subsequent years saw a disastrous military junta government who were politically inept, the Asian Financial Crisis, 2 more governments brought down, a military backed democrat party coalition with corrupt coalition partners installed, street demonstrations put down with Thais killing Thais,

And yet, the previous 10 months have been your worst here?

Absolutely. The downward spiral continues. I was actually hoping for good things after the "clone" was seated... but I was mistaken. My business has posted it's worst numbers in 6 years and no relief in sight. But I suppose you retirees who sit around and do little to nothing each day don't really resonate with the severity of the situation. So where is the Thaksin redemption promised? No where. It's all empty drivel and I am suffering tremendously because of all this Shinawatra stupidity and lunacy. He can deliver nothing to the masses and the sooner he evaporates the better off this country will be.

#5262075 Rice Pledging Scheme Drives Out Thai Businesses

This scheme was never intended to help farmers or Thailand to begin with.  It was always meant to be a handout of the budget to the connected politicians who control rice mills in exchange for supporting Thaksin.  He needs massive monetary handouts in order to keep those powerful feudal politicians loyal to him, and to keep their support in his quest for a pardon for his crimes and in order to get the money the courts took from him, the money he stole from the Thai people, returned.  The disastrous affects this policy may have on farmers or on the nation as a whole are completely irrelevant.  The plan is working as designed.

Since my first visit to Thailand, back in 1987, I've liked the Thai food better from the little back soi stalls/restaurants all around than from the hi-so 5-star hotel type.Seems to have more flavor coming from a black, crusty seasoned wok.  I love Thai food, spicey and all, but when I get a craving for a good steak with baked potato and veggies then I visit Banrai Steak House next to the golf course adjacent to Airport Plaza. They also serve Thai food. Prices are good too.

I would not hesitate to recommend the Wanlamun restaurant, Chiang Moi Rd. soi 2. For both quality of the food and price.
If you have not been there before, make the effort its worth it.
A tip:- when entering the air conditioned room the pastry counter is there on your left, make your choice on entering, tell the waitress to regard them as sold. I say this as other diners who have finished their meal have a habit of buying up several of the cakes, sometimes there are none left by the time it comes around to the sweet course of your meal.

My favourites are (in no particular order)

The new Burmese place just down from Thapae Gate
Ginger House (superb service and a great choice on the menu)
Cote Jardin (knock's spots off the Crystal and it's a lot cheaper. I had the best steak in there that I've ever had a couple of days ago)
Khaoman KhaoFao - (probably spelt totally wrong but its the jungle restaurant situated between the Canal Road and the Hang Dong Road on the road that goes to the night safari)
My Kitchen: (I cook for friends once a year, it takes me three days to prepare the meal, but its delicious even though I say so myself!!!!!)
The salad restaurant near Airport Plaza (always fresh and lovely, like the staff)

PM offered early elections if I am missing something I believe Red Shirts turned him down. On dear to bad not satisfied with what the wanted from the get go and got nothing.
missing something? a couple of things
When conditions for November elections were offered; Sondhi/PAD screamed bloody blue that he would taked Abhisit out of power; when power broker Sondhi gives the orders one better listen
Sondhi put Thaksin in power, took him out and other PMs put Abhisit in
The reds turned down the conditions for the elections, the yellows ordered the elections OFF
(no need to Post links, it's fressh memories)
Interesting interpretation, but a bit garbled methinks.
I 'freshly' remember that the UDD/reds unconditionally offered to negotiate with the government on an election date, if only they would withdraw the army first. That was just before the start of enclosing Ratchaprasong, the area where the peaceful protesters, not terrorists had their last stand. Negotiations felt through with conflicting reasons given. UDD leaders vowed to fight till their last drop of blood and surrendered. That's when the remaining red's got angry and started on K. Arisman's backup plan burn the city, or at least those parts own by the elite in the opposite camp.

Unconditionally?  Hardly...their conditions were impossible to begin with (immediate elections, withdraw army, etc.) and then changed from day to day...

And who in their right mind would withdraw protection of the general public after what happened in April?  Along with all the other crazy stuff that was going on...

As a business owner in Chiang Mai I am begging,  pleading and groveling for the PM to re-institute the ban on gatherings in Chiang Mai. Our summer season was destroyed (about %40 of what it should have been) because of the political problems. What are these people thinking. When I saw the red shirts parading down the Sunday walking street market again my heart sank. I scraped by in hopes tourists would have forgotten about all this by winter and we could recoup some of our losses. Doesn't any body realize that travel plans will be made for winter travel in the next month? I am wondering why Thais will not become a voice to stop this before it starts. I know personally 30 businesses (that include Thais) that will close permanently if they don't get a good winter income. The amount of foreign owned businesses up for sale now are too many to mention and many more will follow and with sorrow that their love affair with this country is over will move on to another place to call home. I would love to continue to call Thailand my home (I have lived here 9 years now) but I cannot afford to lose any more money and live with no certainty of the future. I hope there is a place we business owners foreign and Thai can all can be a strong voice to the PM to pay attention to this major problem. We need to kill the monster while it is still a baby and not let this grow again to an unmanageable problem.

So I am begging to PLEASE BAN GATHERINGS again.

lol... yes indeed. Of  course ALL freedom of expression should be banned so that small business can make money. Really. Think about what it is that you are saying.
