I wish that everybody who has a UK state pension was entitled to the same where ever they choose to live, but with the current economic struggle things are only going to get worse,I pay my taxes and NI in the UK still,I'm 32 and worked since I left school, but the government want me to work until I am 67 or likely 70 for my pension is that fair.

I somehow doubt that you will get any UK State pension when you eventually retire!

But, I hope I am proven wrong.

Not sure I agree.  I can't see any governmetn having the political balls to do away with the state pension, although I would support its abolition.

Much more likely is that it will be diluted and available at much older ages, which is only appropriate considering we are all living longer now than when it was first introduced.

Well done, ExpatOilDude.  At first read, I of course assumed that you were another dissatisified customer trying to tell us how sucky Thailand was and that you're leaving for greener pastures.  But you're right, there are much worse places than Thailand and they don't need to be confined to South America.  I wish some of our more disgruntled expats would take a hike to Cambodia or the PI and give them a try.

Prediction:  The whiner/whinger brigade will be out soon and will be just tripping over themselves to say that the list applies to Thailand as well.  To those folks: I fart in your general direction.

Fart away Berkshire but your conclusion/comments are an admission that there are parallels with Thailand.

Good post by the OP though and I suspect that the list was constructed to 'tease' (never heard "Mai Mi" used on South America1 :))

Also, and I might be totally wrong about this, I thought that that glass on the walls was to keep the cats out. This is common throughout asia and I remember that in Korea being told they put the glass on the walls to keep the cats out.
the broken glass is to keep out pink elephants. anybody with that kind of wall will confirm that no pink elephant ever climbed over it.

when you say you live on a gated community you mean a mooban, did you pay up front for a period of time for, security at entrance, street cleaner, rubbish collections, street lighting ect.what i have seen with moobans once the paid up period runs out it is handed to the residents to run, that is when the fun starts.some will pay some wont and the place will come to look like a shit house, about other things you have mentioned forget it or you will find yourself in deep shit with certain neighbours, its best if you keep your mouth shut because you will be on your own,or sell up and get out and dont buy on a mooban.please take this advice.

the day 5,000 family members come in here flooding with 'freakouts' about their loved ones detention is the day I'll believe it.   Speeding is illegal here too, but how often do ppl get popped for that and furthermore how often does 200bht not take care of it?  TiT

If you are happy to "bribe" the Police and allow them of the option to accept that bribe, then you are at fault.

I don't know what country you "used" to live in but I'm sure you would not of considered being proud to feed corruption there as it may have ended up sending you to jail for attempting to bribe an officer of the law ! Don't try to be clever.

So anyone heard of any arrests of foreigners that showed up with 20k and a ticket at the airport?
Anyone blacklisted...?

Well, three years ago August 6th, I was 1087 days overstay. I went to the airport with my Filipino GF and our 3 year old son. I had my 20,000 baht in and ticket in hand. The ticket counter gave me all kinds of problems. They would not check me in until I cleared immigration. I went to the immigration desk (near the passport control/terminal entrance). They asked for my boarding pass. I told them that the ticket counter would not check me in until I cleared immigration. The immigration officer then proceeded to fill out some papers, I signed, they took my picture, I paid the fine, they stamped my passport, and off I went to get my boarding pass. No problems.

I went to Vietnam. I stayed there for about two months. I came back to Thailand by bus from Phnom Phen. I checked in at the Aranyapathet immigration checkpoint. They let me in with no problems. I have gone through several immigration checkpoints with zero problems even with the overstay stamp in my passport. By the way, they wrote the number of days I overstayed in my passport. So all immigration officers were able to my prior misdeed.

Granted this was three years ago.

Dudeinthailand

Edit: I had a 30-day visa from the Aranyapathet immigration check-point that I overstayed. I received the same when I returned. I have since had a 15 day stamp, several tourist visas, and an education visa.

1087 days overstay ? No wonder they bought in this law. Shocking that you can get away with ignoring the law for so long and you seem proud of it. I guess if I rob someone and don't get caught for 45 days I should also get away with it ?

I find it interesting that you are comparing a non-violent immigration violation to a violent act of robbery. In my book it is not even close. Also, the policy in effect at the time of my overstay was followed by the airport immigration officers. I agree illegal immigration and immigration violations should be dealt with. I also believe that some people that overstay are good people and have their own reasons for overstaying. Does it make an overstay okay? No. The individual should be punished according to the current policy. Putting them in jail for an extended period of time or treating them the same as a violent criminal is not what an intellectual society accepts as justice. It is over-reactionary and an emotional punishment.

#3906246 Cheating Pharmacy

Posted KarenBravo on 2010-09-25 09:27:18

Not just pharmacies.
Yesterday, I pulled into a new motorbike repair place that has recently opened close to where I live.
My rear, right indicator needed a bulb change.
I specified that it should be 12 volts.

After much searching around, he finds a bulb, installs and checks it. Then, hurriedly tries to screw the orange plastic cover on.
I had noticed that the flashing light was dim and asked to see the bulb that he had just put in.
Sure enough it was a 24 volt bulb.
I pointed this out to him, so, he had to buy the correct bulb from another shop very close by.
This he installed and everything was good. Asked him how much and he said 20 Bt.
I gave him a 100 Bt note, but, only got 60 Bt change. When I queried this he said he had changed his mind and it was now 40 Bt.

Needless to say, I won't be taking any of my four motorbikes to him for servicing.
It was worth paying 20 Bt to know that the man was a cheat and liar.

You might want to add a large UPS to your list, as despite the voltages being the same, the current handling and the regulation of your supply, can be somewhat "erratic" to say the least.

We were on the so called 230V or whatever it is supposed to be, varied between 220 and 240V since I have been here, however, it also depends on how many people are using the line near to your transformer...we used to get down to 179V of an evening if you put the shower heater on, enough to make your PC roll over and die!

THE CAPITAL
Bangkok may be uninhabitable in seven years
By Varataya Chailangka

Dr Ajong Chumsai na Ayudhya, a Thai scientist who has worked with the US space agency Nasa in the past, said yesterday that the areas around the Gulf of Thailand would be hit by tsunamis and that Bangkok would be under water in less than seven years.

At a seminar yesterday about the impact of global warming on Chiang Mai residents, Ajong said humans were mainly to blame for such disasters because they were using up natural resources, chopping down forests and kept emitting greenhouse gases with no regard for the future.

The United States is the biggest contributor to carbon dioxide at 30.2 per cent, followed by China at 30 per cent and India at 23 per cent, he said. Thailand was at rank 22 or 23 out of the 200 biggest emitters of CO2 in the world. With the current CO2 emission rate standing at 395 parts per million (ppm) from the previous 300ppm, he warned that greenhouse gases would increase and bring about inevitable changes.

Ajong explained that over the past three decades the temperature has risen, with warmer seas killing coral reefs, glaciers melting, storms becoming stronger and earthquakes being of greater magnitude.

Warning that temperatures would rise by approximately 4 degrees Celsius, Ajong said polar bears would be extinct in less than 10 years and the seas would rise by six metres.

So far there have been two significant changes to the Earth.

Firstly, the planet's axis has shifted, changing weather patterns, and secondly, the Earth's crust has displaced, causing more frequent and more severe earthquakes and tsunami disasters.

Thailand, which is located on the Eurasian Plate, will be affected, Ajong warned, adding that the Gulf of Thailand would be hit by tsunamis and affect the South very badly.

Earthquakes within the 6-Richter scale and severe flooding would hit provinces in the North, such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Lampang and Uttaradit, he said.

The Central region, namely Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi and Ayutthaya, would be under seawater, he said, adding that the capital would be uninhabitable in seven years.
