Mcdonalds Discrimination Or Typical Thai Business?

2011-08-15 10:23:13

Does McDonalds discriminate against the Thai people and residents of Thailand?Or is this typical Thai business style?

I was recently reminded that no where in Thailand can a customer receive a complementary coffee fill up after the initial purchase of one. Throughout the world other McDonalds have a free refill policy, but NOT inThailand. Is this discrimination or typical Thai style business where little or nothingis given freely?

BTW if you go to a McD's in Khon Kaen and buy anything withcheese i.e. cheeseburger don't expect the cheese to be melted.

Electric Outages

2011-05-01 17:49:39

Does anyone know the cause of electric outages in Isaan?  The electric in our village seems to go outseveral times a week. Sometimes it goes of and on so quickly it seems likesomeone “flipped” a switch.  I’mconcerned about how this impacts electrical devices more than theinconvenience.  While living in BKK theelectric would go out; usually during a storm.  Here it seems to go out with much less severeweather. Is this an Asian thing, a Thailand thing, or and Isaan thing?

Cheers

Isaan: The Chicken Capital Of Thailand

2011-04-11 13:17:46

I wonder if Isaan is the chicken capital of Thailand?  I've accompanied my wife to her village after living in BKK for ??? 5-6 yrs. We're hoping to build, and currently rent a house. Much like everything else in Lack of Sanctions (LOS) the lack of boundaries extend all the way to the dam_n local bird - the chicken. Maybe it should be the country's bird??? These lousy critters - except for their taste after being BBQ'd are NOTHING  but a pain in the butt (for me). They come on our land/yard dig/ crap/ eat from the Mrs. little vegetable garden and I HATE them. We've put up a netting fence but the rotten SOB'S fly over the top. I can't bring myself to hit/kill them w/ a stick or something, but wish I knew a way of keeping them wandering over the rest of the village people's land. They love em/ raise em/ cuddle em and let them even climb on there (under the house) belongings. GEEZE I have not seen so many chickens in my life. What gives???????  They run freely along with their "friends" the dogs. ????

Any advise how to keep them out will be GREATLY  appreciated. Shame the "law" (LOL over that statement) does not allow BB guns here.

Cheers,
Keoki

How To Replace A Squat Toilet With A Sit-Down One?

2011-02-09 08:40:09

I could use your knowledge and experience on how to replace a squat toilet  with a sit-down one.  Hoping to install a sit-down toilet, I lifted the squat toilet that sits on top of a square box. To my utter shock I saw a - what looked like - a 16 inch hole.  I guess it was a pipe but it looked like some type of screening was evident. YIKES.

I have no idea what this is, or how to start replacing it with a Western/sit-down toilet. Can you help educated me? This "plumbing" is really really different than what I am familiar with in the USA.

My apologizes in advance if there is another entry regarding this. I did search TV and Google and found nothing.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. I rely on TV contributes for so much.

Thai Village Chief Control And Power:

2010-11-08 10:12:52

The village chiefs in and around our village in Isaan seem to have much control and power.  Has this power been delegated by the central government, or have these chiefs decided to make policy according to their individual interests?

These chiefs seem to hold power over property and air. They seem to have the right to decide how property is used and feel entitled to go onto anyone’s personal property.  They also decide issues like: if fishing is permitted in large reservoirs, if/when to broadcast extremely loud and intrusive messages vie numerous and strategically located pole mounted loudspeakers. These broadcasts can start as early as 4:00 AM, but usually start around 5:30 AM, and can be heard for long distances. These “broadcasts” occur several times a week. How much is sanctioned by the central Thai government? How much power do village chiefs wield?  How are they elected? I have heard stories that elections are “shams” and that any/all who wish to vie for said position of  Village Chief almost automatically are told they lost the election and no re-count or confirmation is allowed.  Is there really freedom or choice in Thailand’s rural villages?  It appears Thai village dwellers must endure conditions set by these apparent “lords of the land.”
